Hi. I had a tonsilectamy just over a week ago. There was a slight complication - a tuma had to be removed as well as the tonsil. I have lymphoma cancer at the ag of 65. So i have been informed that the pain is worse for older people. How true. My pain is excrutiating and has been for 8 days now. Not only have I the pain but have had to endure two bad bleeds. So bad i thought I was going to bleed to death. This morning i awoke to a mouthful and throat full of blood. Shock and horror. What to do. I panicked a little to say the least. So after 5 minutes managed to start thinking and got a frozen bag of peas under my chin and pushed against my neck. Then started swilling with very cold water. After 15 minutes the bleeding stopped and i drove to hospital. Just in case!!
The pain continues. It is so debilitating. I'm depressed, tired, washed out and can see no end to this awfull painfull period in my life.
If any one has some suggestions please contact me. Thanks

I am 43 years old and I am 6 days post-op. Yesterday was the absolute worst! I normally set the timer on my phone 4.5 hrs after taking my pain meds to stay on top of the pain. Well I fell asleep and didn't set it...MISTAKE! When the pain is out of control...it's hard to get it back under control. After two days of ice cream, popsicles and soup I needed something more filling and nutritional. Ive managed to keep down mashed up baked beans, grits and pureed green beans!! Iced water has become my best friend! I thought I was turning the corner today, and decided to do a little shopping and became lightheaded in the store...too much too soon. I'm learning the hard way to respect my recovery process! The pain hasn't been quite as bad today so hopefully I am on the mend.

I'm on my 3rd day and I have to say this. Take a pain killer every 3.5-4 hours no matter WHAT and don't ever stop drinking icewater. Take an ibuprofen 1-2 hours after each pain killer with 500ml of ice water again. If you go to sleep, set an alarm for 4 hours, wake up, take a pain killer and drink/slowly gargle 500ml of very icey water. So far i've missed 3 pills and forgot to do this 3x but now I am doing it every single time and the pain goes away quickly with gargling the ice water and drinking all 500ml. Do not eat ANYTHING rough for at least 4-5 days. I caused myself a horrible bleed from eating a sharp popsicle. No bread, no crackers, no hotdogs. the O.p. caused herself this pain but sipping water and eating the wrong stuff. 500ml of ice water every 2 hours. do it!

I am 22 yo and am on day 7 of my tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy due to recurrent viral tonsillitis. The first 5 days were not bad other than some nausea I had due to the pain medication. Throwing up and a disgusting throat cannot be a good combination. I feel like I am healing well but I have to say day 6 or really the night of day 6 and 7 have been the most excruciating nights thus far. Tears have been flowing worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Sleep deprivation also makes you a little emotional so I am attributing my crying to that. I stopped taking pain killers on day 4 and began taking Tylenol and ibuprofen (hoping this does not actually cause bleeding). When I wake up in excruciating pain at night I get myself ice pops and cold water let myself cry and force them down. Believe it or not it does relieve pain. I also read these posts lol not sure if that's helpful or harmful. I just keep praying for the day that I am no longer in pain but from what I am reading that could be a few days from now. I do feel like this will be worth it in the end. I am hopeful that I will not be as sick or as chronically fatigued as I was. Hang in there are you suffering people it will be better soon ❤️

Also eating wise. It has been very tough but a goal I made for myself is one solid-ish food each day. Mashed potatoes, pasta, chicken soup, etc. otherwise drink plenty of fluids, chew ice chips, drink protein drinks. Do not get dehydrated power through. Distract yourself from the pain stay in a calm low stimulating environment (lights out), listen to calming music, watch movies or Netflix (entertaining or funny no need for the sad stuff temptation to cry is already there without it) you got this just think in 2 weeks things we will be so much better

I'm 30 years old and on day 7 post-surgery. Day 6 was by far the worst. I was warned by a few adults that also has theirs removed that this would be a very difficult and painful recovery but I was still not prepared. I was lucky to have no ear pain days 1-5 because the pain in my throat was enough. However, day 6 brought terrible ear pain along with a nasty case of thrush. The thought of having to swallow even my meds had me in tears. My husband called my doctor and I was started on Prednisone to assist with the swelling and a rinse for the thrush. I was not happy about taking the steroid, especially since it has to be taken with food, but they told me it would help with the pain and swelling. That was a relief since sleeping has almost been impossible since I cannot lay down without choking on my giant uvula. I haven't really been able to eat, just managing half an ensure and if the pain isn't too bad I can do a soft boiled egg. This is day 2 of taking the steroid and the swelling in my tongue and uvula has already gone down. I was actually able to speak a little bit and I may actually be able to sleep in my bed tonight instead of propped up on my sofa. There is a light at the end of the tunnel! Do not hesitate to call your doctor about any concerns you have. Pain after surgery is expected but suffering to the point of tears for a week is ridiculous. If I physically could have, I would have yelled at my doctor for not putting me on the Prednisone sooner. My advice: ice chips all day helps, run a humidifier non stop, even as bad as it hurts force yourself to swallow, it'll help with the ear pain, add benefiber or something similar to everything you drink because the meds will constipate you, set alarms for your medication, and communicate with your doctor if your pain isn't being managed well

Wonderful post! I’m 28 female, day 7 post op. I see no light. I have managed to eat soup last night, the pain is killing me. My throat is on fire, I wake up in tears every night, pain starts at the back of my tongue, moves to the jaw and from there my ears want to explode. As a nurse too, I took a cocktail of pain killers 2 nights ago (anything I had at home/brought in by friends) and I managed to knock myself out for nearly 10hours without waking up! Can not do that again as the next morning I had a terrible stomach ache ( it was worth it), paracetamol + ibuprofen are not touching this excruciating pain. Still I feel i immensely miss my gorgeous and infectious tonsils and have regretted this surgery many times. My own breath makes me feel sick! I found out chewing gum helps a but but can’t really swallow anything else than water... other distraction techniques like writing my experience in websites like this one, stopped me from crying for a few minutes... best of luck everybody! ..

Great post I'm a 27 female, day 6 post op and a mother of 6 children. Today is one of my awful days my ear feels like I drink a bottle of hot sauce My throat is irking the c**p out of me I feel like every little noises irritate my ear drum even my 3 month old baby girl cry. I tried to eat soup last night but that a joke I brought it back up so my husband gave me Gatorade but for some reason it tasted funny like everything else water juice anything else. The pain meds they give me knocks the pain away for only 4 hour but it still hurts after wake up the horrible pain is back.
My question is; can someone help me get through this horrible time and tell me how to get through this recovery process without crying with my baby?
