Hello everyone. I am 17 and has my tonsils out 4 days ago.
After surgery there was a LOT of bleeding and blood cots I would pull out of my mouth (disgusting I know!) but the anaesthetic made me so woozy I didn’t even know why. I would wake up in pain during the night but would be so knocked out that I would fall asleep.
Day 2 was fine at first . I ate some toast and found that coffee or tea really soothed my throat. I then ate yogurts, soups, bread, ice cream, juice! all I know is I was on paracetamol and codeine! However, later than day I was released from hospital and sent home around 5pm, started getting very bad pain again and couldn’t speak at all without it hurting really bad. This was the same for day 3. I would rest a lot and drink a lot and hold ice cubes on my neck for minutes but it would burn!!! I am in so much pain and honestly mornings are the worst. I’ve taken some soluble solution and to be honest, I would recommend it because it is literally fine if you mix it with a bit of orange squash and the bigger gulp you take, the less pain. Sounds weird, but I read it, tried it and honestly it worked. ibuprofen is good before eating aswell. Day 3 I ate some mashed potatoes, burger meat, cucumber, cereals, a chocolate bar, a busicuit, a yogurt, some porridge and some toast. Seems like a lot but really I had a tiny bit of each lol.
Anyway, I’m on day 4 now and have woke up earlier than usual with very bad pain, a horrible taste and I am unable to talk and swallow without pretty much crying! I sucked an ice pole this morning and put some ice on my neck but that didn’t help. So, I took the soluble solution ( codeine, paracemtol and something else which I can’t remember) and I feel better than I did an hour ago but still in minor pain.
So, I would suggest that pain relief is taking every time needed and that some anti-inflammatory tablets are taken so reduce the swelling on the tongue and back of throat. I do recommend ice poles to be eaten quite frequently. Toast is good, yes it hurts but of course it hurts. I’ve also eaten a whole pack of crisps and they were good but hurt so bad. I would suggest staying away from dairy products because it will prelong the process. It won’t make scabs form, instead it will make the back of the mouth all lubricated and full of puss. Don’t eat rice either. The little bits will attach to the gunk at the back on the throat and coughing it out will be a lot of pain! I really wish everyone the best of luck and WOULD NEVER recommend anyone to get this done. Nothing is worth this pain. The best part about the surgery is being knocked out to be honest! Wish I would’ve woke up when the pain was all over instead! Good luck guys, you will definitely need it.
