Anyone using any type of drug or alcohol, will have side effects from that drug. Hilucinations, muscle relaxing, increased appetite, speeding up the heart, blood and breathing rate, the ability to remember or learn is impaired, and lung and other cancers. Just like second hand smoke, effecting the innocent bystanders in a room full of smokers.... so can any inducement effect that of an unborn fetus. Eating well promotes good health for both mother and baby,... ingesting any product will give the same effects to the unborn fetus as to the mother. They are dont forget, attached via the ambilical cord. The fetus is fed through the ambilical cord. So any development of the heart, brain, bones, tissue, are all impacted by what is and isn't being contributed to its development. Think about it, it is an extension of yourself.

Smoking pot is bad for the unborn child. The first 3 months is the most important development time for the whole fetus. When a child is in the uterus the brain develops first. When you smoke pot ciggs ect. It deprives the fetus of oxygen, also prlonged exposure to pot can change your bodys chemical make up as well as the unborn childs.
Nothing is written in stone but 65% of familys that smoke pot, dicover there child is born with ADHD,, ADD, Asthma and many nemous medical conditions. If you think this is crazy and I don't know s*hit. Look on the web and typ in "Fetus development" You will find immence amounts of information about you developing fetus. I would also suggest to go to prenatel classes. Not only is it confidentual, but it will help you understand about fetus development and what drugs are safe.

I am studing to become a Educational Assistant( A person whom works with physical and menatally handicapped children) this is where my info has came from plus raising my own 2 children. AND MOST IMPORTANT SMOKING POT IS A METAL ISSUE NOT PHYSICAL>IT TRULLY IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD ASK ANY DOCTOR OR NARCOTICS OFFICER.

Hello all!!! First and foremost, if you have never smoked weed please place your ignorance to the side for a moment and try to understand what a person may be going through. Now, to any pregnant woman who maybe trying to shake the habit or who just simply can't resist----> you can talk to your ob/gyn and inform them that you smoke weed for whatever the reason may be. Your ob/gyn can prescribe you steroids to help strenghten the baby's lungs. However, I would not reccomend doing this during the first 3 months(the first trimester) considering this is the most critical part of the development of your fetus. As for the state taking your child away----->NO! A social worker will talk to you while you ARE IN the hospital and basically give you a small lecture on smoking while you are pregnant. The only signifignace I've seen is a lower birth weight in comparison to mothers who smoke versus non smoking mothers. I wish anyone in this predicament the best of luck!! :-)

I am going to be a grandmother. I am very excited. I just found out today that my son's girlfriend is smoking pot while she is pregnant and that is how I found this message board. I don't honestly think it has done me any good except for get me very angry.

The total ignorance on this site is disgusting me. Let me begin by saying that I am not "anti pot". I am a casual pot smoker and have been for over 25 years. The fact that there is nothing "conclusive" about smoking pot during pregnancy says it all. What about when testing and modern technology is able to prove that there may or may not be something "conclusive"???

How about the fact that when you are expecting a child you should do what is best for them and start being a parent before they are even born? When I found out I was pregnant with my first, over 21 years ago, I stopped EVERYTHING! That includes smoking, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, and the list goes on. My ONLY focus was on my baby and irregardless of what "inconclusive" things were out there I was going to do my best at making sure my child was okay.

Anyone who has answered to this subject and is advocating the continuation of putting anything that is questionable into their body during pregnancy is thinking only of themselves. Time to grow up and realize there are no more excuses. You are going to bring someone into your life who is going to rely on you. It's time to prove to them right now that you are there for them, not yourself.

Sorry this sounds harsh............but I really believe in giving your baby the best chance he or she has. Please do not rely on "inconclusive" findings.

women who smoke weed are retarded! if keeping your baby from oxygen, which can cause complications, also if you breastfeed your giving your baby thc which will slow down their motor functions, chicks ive seen it first hand, with two of my neices, sad to think someone who could give birth would be and could be as selfish as to smoke weed. gee thanks mommies to be for smoking and slowing down the future. Maybe that's why everyone should grow up before getting pregnant, but then again,,, im sure these are the teeny boppers, who guess what?, just think about themselves! GROW UP! do your RESEARCH before being this stupid!

Anyone who smokes and drinks, while pregnant is undeserving of a new life. That baby doesn't get to choose what it consumes, as a mother you are supposed to protect your baby from harmful substances, inside and outside of the womb. I can't stand the idea of people smoking and drinking while pregnant. It is unfair. Every child deserves to breathe clean air. You may not be able to protect your baby from falling when they take their first steps, or when they scrape their knee for the first time. But the least you can do is wait till your not pregnant to smoke. You haven't even given birth yet, and you already killing your baby slowly. What kind of mother are you going to be?

Smoking weed really dosen't really have bad effect on a fetus if you don't smoke for the first two trimestes. In the first trimester the organs and skeletal system is forming. And by last trimester everything is formed and is and weed really has no effect on the fetus all it really does is slow down the heartrate temororaly. And as far as the whole social services thing it false. All health facilities can not release medical info as stated by the hippocratic oath. They can be sued for releasing yor medical info without your consent. I work in a doctors office so I should know. I also smoked only during my last trimester and had braxton hicks ( fake coontractions) and went to the hospital. While there they put the baby through a stress test and I was informed that everything is perfectly fine, my baby passed with flying colors.

I just needed somewhere to turn to...
I'm 25 years old and I smoke pot. I'm not a heavy user, not everyday type thing. I use it a few times a week to relax and so I am able to eat. The entire time I have been pregnant (15 weeks) I have been unable to eat well, I throw up a lot. i just always seem to be sick. Even if I am hungry and a plate of food that i wanted 10 minutes ago is put infront of me.... I take about 3 bites and I am repulsed. My health care professional said they would not help me and give me any anti nausea pills. I also have a mild anxiety disorder. A lot of stress has been going on in my life, such as my significant other, and my apartment that me and my parents live in lliterally crumbling about our ears. Mold is growing in the attic because we didn't have a roof for 2 months. I don't want to call the building or health inspector yet because we have to get at least half of our things packed, because they will condemn this house. My parents are on belmont, but we've been told they won't help with the moving. We have no money... And I refuse to lose some of the heirlooms in the family by having the house condemned and being told I have 3 days. So you can see the sort of stress I'm talking about. (oh also half my belonging were ruined by not having a roof and I consulted a lawyer and he told me I had no case)
Now I go to my routine prenatal visit and suddenly I'm treated like a heroin addicted. They yell at me and tell me they will call CPS on me and I won't keep the child and that I'm a bad mother. I'm very scared. I'm more upset that i lose my choice, recieve no help from the health clinic, and I'm scared of losing my child or going to jail. I'm scared that even after I quit because I've been smoking for years and years that i'll still test positive. And I thought it was illegal to drug test someone unless they agreed to it. And I know I didn't. Any info is welcome... please...

i am truly disappointed in every person on this site who has given a response in which this woman was put down....want some facts from a woman who is currently pregnant? nausea during pregnancy is by far the worst you will ever experience, you cant keep food down, doctors are unwilling to provide anti-nausea medications 99% of the time....how is an unborn child supposed to grow and develop properly if nutrients taken in by the mother in foods (which by the way are the best nutrients, far more effective than that in prenatal vitamins) are not absorbed because they are immidiately expelled from the body? also let me ask you people if you know about hormone levels during pregnancy? in case you dont know they sky rocket and you are more prone to stress (which is very very bad on the unborn child)....i am not against smoking marijuana as i have done this for years and see no problem with it as long as you do it in the privacy of your own home....marijuana has been made into a monster like all other illegal drugs but is the only drug that has medical values....the effects of marijuana on a fetus is "unknown" because it has not really been studied in the united states (because it is illegal), it has however been studied in Jamaica by a woman named Melanie Dreher, i wont tell you what her study suggests about marijuana on fetuses, just type that name in google and see for yourself....you think that all the hippies quit smoking while pregnant? wrong, some of them im sure did quit, but i'd be willing to bet that the vast majority didnt and their children arent mentally retarded or unhealthy in any way...next i would like to say that plenty of women think its "okay" to drink a glass of red wine during pregnancy (different people believe differently but i have heard women report that it is okay to drink up to a glass of red wine a week) let me start by saying that if something can cause a syndrome that is in its own class (fetal alcohol syndrome) then it IS NOT "okay".....also you wouldnt believe how many women smoke cigarettes (up two two packs a day) which is very very unhealthy and IS PROVEN to cause problems for the unborn child....let me ask you how many of you have put down these women who i know for a fact are harming their unborn children but think its okay....why dont you put them down? because alcohol and cigarettes are not frowned upon by everyone because theyare not illegal like marijuana......so before you get on here and try to make some poor pregnant woman feel even worse about her situation when all she is asking for is advice, you need to do your research and get a life because you are truly pathetic.............to my fellow pregnant woman i honestly dont know what will happen, i was told that yes they do test newborns for drugs, but i know many many people who use marijuana daily even up until delievery and their children we not taken, i could see if your baby was born with meth or crack in his/her system and was very ill, but a little marijuana they probably wont do anything, if they do something they may call child services but do you honestly know how many people do much worse things as parents and their children arent taken....i highly doubt you will have your child taken or go to jail as children are rarely taken from their mothers especially newborns because this is not a natural thing and babies tend to do best with the original mother during the first 6 weeks of life.....if you drink plenty of water (i also suggest cranberry juice...not coctail im talking 100% juice) it should flush your system out (as well as your babys) not to mention both are very good for you anyways....i hope this information was helpful to you and i hope it educated some of these ignorant people....congratulations on your pregnancy :-)

I am not sure as to what would be done if a newborn were to test positive for THC at birth. I highly doubt they would take the child away when crack babies are given back to their mothers.

As for the effects of smoking while pregnant, very little is known other than a lack of oxygen (equivalent to smoking cigarettes, probably a little less dangerous seeing as how marijuana doesn't contain chemicals similar to embalming fluid and rat poisons). Marijuana is a short term effect drug, with no absolute proof of any long term effects on anyone, that includes mother and baby.

I am not promoting smoking while pregnant, marijuana may not necessarily be harmful for a baby, but it definately isnt good for the baby either.

I'd like to add that drinking while pregnant is not comparable to smoking while pregnant. Alcohol can cause birth defects and long term learning disabilities.

I hope you found anything I said helpful and I hope all goes well for you and your new baby. Good luck and Congratulations!

my kids weighed over 9 lbs and reached milestones early, and I smoked with both. I don't think they drug test the baby unless you tell them you did drugs, or are homeless, maybe?
