Pregnant and Smoking Marijuana

I have been a pot smoker for a long time. Not that I'd sit around and smoke all day, just occasionally, like having a glass of wine (which has a similar effect). I found out I was pregnant at about 4 weeks (thats 2 weeks from conception), during that time I had smoked pot and I did smoke a few times after I found out. Everything I've ever read or heard has always been that it has no effect on the fetus. In fact I know many children whos mother smoked during the entire pregnancy and they are all bright healthy children. So I always assumed that it really was "no big deal" and it likely isn't, but I guess those motherly feelings and fears got to me. I am an educated person speak 2 languages fluently ext. So I know that smoking pot does not "make you dumb", but who am I to hurt my unborn child. IF somthing were to go wrong I would hate myself FOREVER, I just think that if you're ready to have a child you can stop smoking for that time. I also smoked cig. and quit the min. I found out. My problem was with pot. Not that it WAS a problem, it's just difficult if you're hearing that it's not harmful, so why not? What I was fearing more than anything was testing positive for a drug and having them take my baby away. And thhey can test you at any prenatel apt. They do need to inform you, but they have the right. So I don't know whats best and for the people preaching that mothers smoking are horrible, i say get a life, there are much worse things mothers can do to their babies aqnd that is stress. For me it was stress that if i smoked i would hurt my baby. So yeah i probably was hurting it via putting it into stfress. But ifyour feeling better from smoking (a small amount mind you) that should not be such a problem. My Dr. recently prescribed vicodin for an absesed tooth and i didn't believe it was freally harmless so i did a little research online and many mothers with cronic pain take vicodin during their entire pregnancy.... Weed is a pain killer, wake up people, people use it instead of stron narcotics like vicodin. So if your having high stress, anxiety, pain ext, it really can't be so different from taking a small amount of a pain killer like vicodin. So don't feel so bad about it. My reason for smoking was de-stressing, i'm not in any pain and don't suffer from anxiety, so there is really no reason for me to do somthing I find fun and relaxing.. Anyway I hope i have made my point, that it is really a case to case issue, everyone is different and as I have heard so much. a happy healthy stress free mother is a happy, healthy stress free baby.. :-)

I think for the most part that it's seen as irresponsible to smoke up while you are pregnant only becuase it does need to neglecting yourself or at least it can. I think as long as you can be responsible and not abuse it that you could do well. What do you guys think?

this is for the comment on taking the child away if marijuana is found in the system.......and YES they will take it away but i would say depending on what state or hospital you go to.My cousin smoked all through her pregnancy and when the baby was born they took custody from her. It was almost a year before they gave it back, she had to stop smoking and have home check up and it even got to the point where they was being such penises they wanted to take her 2 yr old away from her also.There was alot of frustrating things they had to do before they couild get there baby back.

Wow ppl should do a little research before spouting off about issues they obviously don't know anything about. There are a ton of over the counter meds that do alot more damage than a little weed will. The issue is the method of ingestion (smoking) which deprives the baby of oxygen, not the thc.

i am 4 months pregnant and have also not kicked the weed habit yet. all the time i feel guilty and say it will be the last time. i got my first scan in 2days and if thats not enough to stop me then i think i have a serious problem.
i justify my actions by reading things like this as it's good to no im not the only one out there doin it. ladies it is wrong and we no it , my mother never done it to me and ive been healthy all my life with no major problems, i once read something like "of course its ok how do you think babies were born healthy in the late 60's"
think about if anything is wrong with the child .could u forgive youself becasue i no i cant

if you feel the need to smoke please use a vaporizer its the safest way

how many narcotics officers you know that smoke weed? or doctors??? none how do they know lol i see more posts of people not knowing what there talking about and other than those posts its people asking for advice or saying they have smoked weed when pregnant and there kids turned out fine...i know people who smoked weed while pregnant and there kids turned out fine...one of my buddies kid...him and his gf both smoked weed heavily when she was pregnant and what happened...the kid is a genious he is now 2 years ahead in school(2 years younger than everyone in his class)

i failed from grade 2 to grade 9 with 40's and under, i didnt smoke pot or drink...just smoked cigs when i turned 12...the schools kept pushing me ahead even tho i was getting 30's 40's in class...i tried my ass off and no one believed me it just didnt make sense at all...i grew up thinking i was a failure and quit school in grade 9, my oldman kicked me outta the house cuz of it i was 15...i spent 3 years on the streets...became a pothead...cleaned my life up went back home and moved out when i turned 24....but while i was back at home i went back to school...still smoking pot heavily and what happens i pass grade 10-12 with 80's+...i believe it was the weed that helped me but no one believe me they think i just matured...but still its proven u learn better and faster when ur young and its harder to learn when ur older...but for some reason it made sense...i knew stuff i didnt know...it cant be because of my short childhood...my dad smoked weed in the other room when i was a kid...u can say he was the hippy stage...now could it be because he smoked weed while my mom was pregnant second hand smoke...then i was born and nothing made sense till the weed got back in my system??? i was a complete retard when i didnt smoke it...

they should test on me...ill prove there testings all wrong...everyone is different...everyone reacts differently to it...and yes this has nothing to do with pregnant chicks but does has to do with weed...

first of all, dont let anyone on here tell you your stupid or that you shouldnt become a parent just because you smoke weed. i smoke weed and have two kids that are perfectly healthy. i smoked during both pregnancies and had no issues. and no they wont take your baby away. dont let the dumbasses on here push their beliefs on you or make you feel bad just because they dont agree. i think its sad when people pass judgement like they've never ever made a mistake!!

Don't really want to get into this debate because I definitely have my own stance on things. I will say though, if you are on government provided health care, like Medicaid, they can take your baby if he/she tests positive when born. If you do not quit smoking pot by the time you are 6-7 months, there can still be traces. If they do not take the baby, they will atleast scare you. You will be interviewed, they will do a home visit, and then you will be on their radar forever. Not really a risk worth taking, is it?

well its really not good to smooke weed while pregnant i did and quiet when i was 6 months drunk lost of water and everything my son was born with it in his system they didnt take at birth but i amd dealing with them dhs people now im 20 2 kids and pregnant well i went to court yesturday and they took my kids from me don't let weed f**k ur life up like i did now i have to take 50 million classes to get my fu***n kids back

i just wanted to say that im five months preganant and i have just quit smoking and it's very hard and for the people on here who say there upset with the prople who cant stop for the love of there child is BS cause weed is an addiction and its not that easy just to say oh i'm not going to smoke no more all i can do is take it one day at a time and thats it and pray that my baby comes out heathly as a horse but if i hit a blunt(which i'm going to try not to do) dosent mean i love my baby even less or dosent care about his heath cause i do!! also i asked the doctor what can happen with me smoking oh course she advise me to stop but she said " we really do know what can happen but all we do know ithat your baby might have a low-birthweight " so i'm trying to stop cause i want my baby to be chucky lol

I think it's really unfair for any person to judge another for smoking pot while pregnant.

Let me tell you this...I am not a smoker but when I got pregnant I lost almost 20 pounds in the first 3 months of my pregnancy. I never did a single thing in my first pregnancy and I had no intention on smoking with this second pregnancy. I had to start putting weight on and get food to my baby somehow so Ismoked here and there to take the nausea away and get some food into me. I only did it because I needed to eat. I would never in a million years do anything to harm my child and I think that it's wrong that people judge others before knowing why they do what they do.

The people who are pregnant and shooting heroin and smoking crack and stuff like that are the people that should be repremanded, not the people who smoke a bit of pot to take away the sickness.

Another thing, all the reasearch I have done on pregnant women and smoking pot all say the same thing, there is no proof that weed will harm the fetus and that more than likely it deprives the fetus of oxygen. If anything a person who smokes a cigarette does more harm to their unborn child then a person who smokes pot while pregnant.

I'm not saying that doing it is right, but I am saying that before you judge someone for what they do, get the facts. If the person is pregnant and doing because of the "high" that is just wrong. In my case I only did it because I knew that smoking pot gives you the munchies and I needed to eat. I needed to gain weight, and I only did it for that reason and that reason alone. Did I keep smoking after the sickness went away? No I didn't, and why? Because I didn't need that help any longer.

Hopefully the next time someone on here asks a question about smoking pot while pregnant you stop and think, did that person do it just do get a buzz or did they do it for another reason. Whether that reason is right or not isn't up to you to say.

people should be ashamed of themselves acting so quickly to judge someone for smoking a little herb. especially when its legal some places for medical reasones and decriminalized in other states. i wouldnt be suprised if some of you smoke cigs. and still jump to put down others for a little pot. at least it doesnt cause cancer!!! as for the effects my son is perfect and scores high on tests. i smoked untill i was about eight months. my doctors new and had a bigger concerne with my cig addiction. its a personal decision. i know personally it was hard to eat even when i was starving when i did try to quit with my second. i would be starving and still ate like a bird. a couple of tokes and my appetite was bigger and better. As to if they are going to take your kid. most likely not. the doctors have a choice in wether or not they turn you in to cyfd or not. even if they do if your not a threat to your child can take care of them and keep your house clean they will most likely close your case. now if your doing some other drugs shame on you!!!!! all other drugs even prescriptions do have documented side effects.

Wow, the amount of ignorance on marijuana's affect on fetal development in this thread is astonishing. Speaking form my own experience--where I smoked pot throughout my normal, nine-month pregnancy--did not cause mental retardation or kill my baby. Quite the opposite: my son grew into a nationally ranked high school and college athlete before getting his Masters in Education and becoming a high school teacher at a private school. If pot smoke was as detrimental to fetal development as the Henny Penny's in this thread would have you believe, I should have spent the better part of the last three decades wheeling my drooling, physically and mentally disabled son around in a wheel chair, instead of looking forward to celebrating the 28th birthday next month of a young man who is both physically fit and deeply intelligent.
