Hello all, I have a question about professional drivers and type 2 diabetes. I was just diagnosed with type 2 and so far I just need to alter my diet and exercise to get it under control. I don't know how well this will work at first cause I think it will take a little time. My doctors tells me I might have to go on insulin if diet doesn't work. I have a CDL and am wondering what rules apply to me in terms of my license. Anyone who has some information would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to do anything about my license if I don't have to at this point.
Hi, I don't know what state you live in and each state has different rules regarding type 2 diabetes. As far as I know, if you have diabetes type and you're not taking insulin, I don't believe you have to apply for a diabetes exemption. However, there are other licensing and safety requirements that might have to meet. And, again that goes by the state that gave you your license. If you switch over to insulin, you will need to apply for a diabetes exemption if you want to continue to be a professional driver. The best way to get the real info is to do a search on the Internet for CDL licensing for the state that issued your license and see what it says there. I think there are websites that can help interpret for you what you need to do. Additionally, these sites can help you fill out the information you need to give the licensing agency in terms of what they need. It's a good thing to do it this way before you get yourself in trouble. Some questions are not worded well so it requires someone experienced to do it properly. I believe the services are free. Hope that was helpful and I wish you the best of luck. Remember to get your diet under control and exercise regularly so you won't have to take insulin.
