Ptosis or drooping of the upper eyelid, may develop as a result of : disease, injury, previous eye surgery and age but it can be inherited as well. Generally, it is caused by a weakness of the muscle that raises the lid, or a problem with the nerve that is conducting nerve signals to the muscle. Left untreated, ptosis may cause incomplete vision developing , resulting in amblyopia, or lazy eye. Irritation, infection and eyestrain could arise from difficulties in blinking. The symptoms may include: drooping lid, irritation, difficulty closing the eye completely, eye tiredness from strain to keep eye open and other complications of eye dysfunction.
