ha, Russman....funny :)
I'd be happy to give you lessons ;)
I was actually quite surprised I was able to play both instruments a week later....actually, I was able to play just four days later, but was kind of week since I hadn't been able to eat much, so I was wimpy and laid in bed (and didn't go to church to play there)...but did play a concert six days after that...
I am still just absolutely amazed at how much better I am feeling! With all the horror stories I had heard about sinus surgeries, I fully expected the worst! I am very pleasantly surprised :)
Blessings to all!!

i had septoplasty surgery on the 21st nov 2012 at lewisham hospital, looked after verywell by all the staff, went home the same day and had two weeks of really blocked up nose ,then went back to have the surtures removed and i could not belive how better i felt no more blocked nose
Have to say, I am super relieved to read all of your posts. I had septoplasty 3 days ago and feel like c**p! Had a bad reaction to anti-biotics on 1st night home from hospital which led to a lot of vomiting and a huge build up of pressure behind my splints. Getting my splints out next week and cannot WAIT. Would seriously consider taking them out myself if someone gave me a pliers right now!! Can't breathe through my nose and generally feeling like c**p with complete loss of appetite. I really hope it's worth it like you're all saying :(
Yes, Mr. Guest, it does get better. I did not have splints so not sure what that is like. I lost 2 lbs. but have somehow gained it back. Had 2 week follow up appt yesterday and doc said all looks good. He says still some swelling inside but is getting better every day. Nasal rinse is completely clear. Breathing through my nose again, started exercising this week. Keep us posted!
I had a septoplasty, adenoidectomy, and turbinate reduction 3.5 weeks ago. I'm feeling much better now, but the first week post op was pretty miserable. i had the surgery on a Friday, and had to survive with the packing in my nose until Monday. This gave me really bad headaches and I wasn't able to breath at all. Didn't sleep all weekend. After the packing was removed, I felt a lot better, but still had quite a bit of swelling. They were very concerned about bleeding with me, because I have minor form of Von Willebrands, so they treated me before surgery and before getting my packing removed with an IV drug called DDAVP. I did end up having a couple nose bleeds, but nothing major. As of today, the pain is 98% gone, but I am still getting dried blood clots coming out during saline rinses. I'm guessing I bled more than what is typical for this surgery. Overall, I am happy I did the surgery and am looking forward to better breathing
Yay, Al, thanks for sharing your experience. Don't know if I would have been as "eager" to have it if there was packing. I had visions of one of those circus performers where they keep pulling out scarves that never ends!! That would have been the gauze that would have to be pulled out! Keep us posted.
Hi guys - so I had my splints removed yesterday and I feel like a new woman!!!!!! Absolutely amazing relief and doesn't hurt at all. Nose still quite delicate and slightly swollen inside but nothing like my post-op condition, and I actually slept last night! AMEN!
I had a septoplasty done by him 2 weeks ago..
I'm feeling uneasy about how my nose is looking.. it seems like my nose is still deviated.
What happened with your nose when he did your surgery?
I look forward to being able to breath properly and sleep at night without wakening with a dry mouth.
The thought of a general anaesthetic does disturb me, but I'll have to trust the anaesthetist to keep me breathing.
Rosie.
When I scheduled my appointment months ago I was a little worried after finding this thread, but wanted to share my positive feedback so far. I had surgery yesterday, septoplasty and bilateral turbinate reduction and am ~27 hours post-op right now. No splints and packing was removed in recovery after surgery so at first I was able to breath through my nose but with the gauze and swelling it has gotten more difficult. Even without splints it is hard to breath which makes it hard to sleep, I have only been able to sleep an hour or two at a time. I have slept in both a recliner as well as chase lounge and both were better than pillows on a bed but that still doesn't help when you can't breath. The worst part is the dry mouth and even constant water and a humidifier didn't make it all that much better.
Bleeding hasn't been bad at all, the first 3 gauze pads the first day had some blood and mucus but I only went through 5 gauze pads the day of surgery. Since then it has gotten better and last night I had one pad on for 8 hours at night and only had a bit of dried blood from one nostril. I have started with Saline nasal spray today and that seems to help with the dried blood.
Pain hasn't been bad, after getting back from surgery I started with 2 hydrocodone and have only needed 1 every 4 hours since then. Last night I did go a little long on one dose and started to feel some pain so I have kept up as recommended since then. Overall I'd say pain has been about 4-5 on a scale of 1-10.
I do tend to recover very quickly from surgery, in my previous 4 surgeries I have recovered before the times the doctors stated was normal. I fully expect to return to work by day 5 after surgery. I will try to repost again next week with a followup.
i had a septoplast done last thursday and its now monday. my nose leaks alot of fluid. not sure what it is but its a clear yellowy colour. the left nostril is very swollen inside and has a giant cut inside. i was only prescribed antibiotics and pain releif and had the packing taken out the next morning. the outside of my nose and cheeks and top lip have gone down in swelling but the entire left nostril is swollen shut and i cant breathe at all through either. my doctor didnt say anything about using a saline wash through my nose so i havent used any. i had the same operation 12 months ago and it didnt heal properly so i had to have it again. i swear last time my nose swelling had gone down a lot after 3 full days of recovery but this time it hasnt. last time i did use the saline washes alot to clean out my sinuses and so forth. i wonder if that is the deciding factor?? i rang my surgeon to ask but i need to ring back this afternoon. good thing i got my new RC helicopter to play with this week while im off work!!
Hi All,
I read quite a bit about this online before my sugery two days ago. I went in for Turbinoplasty, Septoplasty, and outfracture. The doctor used the Microdebrider for the Turbinate reduction which I think is the best technique from what I've read.
What I hoped to fix:
- Difficulty breathing through nose. One nostril is nearly always fully congested and the other is somewhat useable.
- Bad Breathe (post-nasal drip)
- Poor sense of smell and taste. I think these were both attributed to heavy amounts of mucus (post-nasal drip).
- Tiredness when waking up in the morning (even after a good nights sleep). I think this is from lack of oxygen.
- Hearing. I think the mucus is causing blockage in my eustachian tube, preventing the middle ear to equalize normally. I've read this can cause sounds to be muffled. I've noticed this if fixed immediately after my surgery. My T.V. volume is MUCH lower this week.
I thought I'd share my experience so far:
- Woke up in some pain from surgery and asked the nurse to continue with pain meds until it was gone. That was easy.
- Got home the first night and was groggy and not very hungry, but toast, crackers, and buttered noodles from noodles and company tasted OK.
- Second day went fine with no pain.
- Third day no pain and my energy is coming back. I must say the nights are the only thing that have bothered me as I wake up every couple hours with a super dry mouth. I just keep a bottle of water next to me and take a sip each time. Then, I close my mouth and move my tongue around to get saliva going again. Then, back to bed. Not a big deal though as I'm sitting in my recliner 24/7....
- My nose is totally blocked, but I expected that.
Tips:
- I bought 3 jugs of Naked Juice and drink out of a sports bottle. It's difficult to drink from a normal up because of the gauze under your nose (catching the blood).
- Eat lots of small meals. Helps your body digest more quickly and also focus on healing vs. a huge meal in your stomach. Also, be sure to eat protein and not just carbs. Amino Acids (proteins) are important for the healing process.
- Use the Saline Spray every time you get up. It prevents your nose from getting crusty and I was told by one of the Med Students at the University (who watched my surgery) that those patients not doing a good job with the Saline Spray have a difficult time when going back to get the splints removed. The saline spray prevents the splints from "healing" into the body with the clotted blood.
I've been handling work email and just fine. My surgery went great.
I'm planning on getting a polyp removal and septoplasty at the end of this month.Been reading some of the successes and horror stories on this board to learn all I can about what to expect.my greatest fear is claustrophobia anxiety and fear of extreme panic attacks. Nights are the worst for me. I know my nasal airway will be blocked when I shake from surgery and I'm freaking out about it. Even now, I can't sleep too well just thinking about it. I'm going to talk to my doctor about this and what things are available to get more through this for at least a week. I always tend to think of the worts scenarios, but I also like to be fully prepared with all meds, etc to get through this thing.
im hoping my doc can install airway tubes with the packing for me to breathe a bit upon recovery and until the packing is removed.he says he pulls out the packing the next day, but I'm going to see if its possible to do it just before I leave post- op.
im also wondering aboUt nasal splints, and if ill have them or not.
My other concern is mouth breathing at night. Anyone have suggestions on how to get to sleep for a few hours? Meds? Xanax?
I'm freaking out about this, but know I need to get it done.
any reassuring comments welcome
A
