Well, I have to leave a comment as I read this entire thread twice before having septoplasty, turbonate reduction, and the walls of my nose rebuilt because of closing off when I took a deep breath out of my nose. I was terrified after I read all this. Maybe my ENT was amazing, but I had nothing like this. Day 1, surgery was quick, I arrived at 6:30 am and was home by 9:30. Very woozy that day. I could not sleep more than an hour at a time that night. This was the worst part. No pain, really, didn't even take Tylenol, but breathing out of my mouth all night kept waking me up. Day 2, more awake, light cleaning around the house, sleeping for four hours straight at night, then up every hour again. Next day, I drove, walked two miles, started to breathe out of my nose, run errands, and each day is better. I'm at day 6, totally fine, a little congestion, but nothing big. I have a half marathon one week from now, which I will run/walk because of the surgery, but I'm feeling great. I get the splints out Tuesday (it's Saturday night now, day 6)I had no packing and have been able to breathe out of my nose for two days now. I was ready for the worst, but this was not bad at all.

I am 14 hours recovering from septoplasty with sinus surgery and they cut away some tissue as well. I feel great and only have a slight headache even though it has been 6 hours since my last pain med dosage. (oxycodone) I don't have any bruising. The worst part was trying to sleep because of not being able to breath threw nose and I have sleep apnea. So between the dry mouth from strictly breathing threw mouth and the apnea I would wake up frequently. I ate last night 6 hours after surgery chicken noodle soup and pudding..... no issues. I will have my splint taken out in a week. Good Luck!

I know a lot of these posts are older, but for anyone looking at this page in preparation for their septoplasty, or if they just had the procedure and are wondering what the prospects for recovery is: it really isn't terrible. At all.

As of posting, I am currently only on my 3rd day of recovery and I feel fantastic! I can breathe through my nose somewhat. For some background, I'm a 25 year old female. Women are more likely to have adverse effects from the anesthesia, and I didn't suffer in anyway from that either.

Some of these testimonials are borderline terrifying! I feel awful that these poor people had to suffer so much with this!

My recommendation is *really* researching the ENT you would want to do the surgery. The Doctor I had is amazing and I knew him from a young age. So I made sure I knew who I was going to. As with any surgery, do some looking around first.

I had the works; septoplasty, sinus surgery, and turbinectomy. No trouble, and I'm healing rapidly.

NO rotting flesh smell (under what circumstance, is that ever going to be a normal thing?) and I was off my pain medication by the morning of the day after the surgery.

I could eat the first day (albeit, gently, of course) breathe just fine, and no sensitivity.

I didn't even need to do anything really special; I just avoided hot foods and liquids, and cooled my forehead/eye/nose bridge area gently with an ice pack for about 20 minutes before bed the first 2 nights only. Didn't over exert myself and slept quite a bit.

In conclusion, if you're getting a septoplasty/sinus surgery/turbinectomy, don't be discouraged. It's a very helpful surgery that will benefit you in the long run.

Find a trustworthy ENT and there shouldn't be a problem. You will be alright and if you need this type of surgery, you should definitely get it.

Seven days after surgery and like everyone just looking for a few answers. In Australia I don't think they use splints - (they sound awful). I had dissolvable swabbing. Although that was disgusting in its own right it seems to work well only starting to dissolve 4 days following the procedure. I feel like I am well on my way to recovery but still not great at times. For eg you think I'm fine then a sinus headache comes on. Glad to read here that other people had upper teeth sensitivity pain. I did too. I also have an eye that is a bit weepy. One strange thing and I see someone else has written about it is a sensitive scalp - just above my forehead to the top of my scalp. Perhaps they strap us in - not sure but it feels very odd. These things will disappear. I have to say the most uncomfortable thing for me was sleep deprivation. For some reason - spanning 2-5 days post surgery I could not sleep. Every time I laid my head down and went to sleep - I stopped breathing. Then would wake up gasping for air. It was very scary. I don't have sleep apnea but maybe this is just how my body rolls ie I can't breathe through my mouth only at night.... Anyway. That didn't help as sleep deprivation sucks. On my way to recovery now.... Slowly but surely. Love the saline shots - they have been a turn around for me. Good luck all and in the words of Monty Python - blessed are the big noses.

Had surgery 9/24/15. Went in wasn't told much about post op. After the surgery I felt ago. I didn't take pain med until that night and I was able to eat and chew same day. The most annoying thing is the feeling of wanting to blow your nose. He used dissolve blessed packing like gel and stitches which I am still confused about. I don't go back post op until 10/9. Which is weird for me too. Any ways last night in the shower I breathed I out as the water was on my face and a thick chunk of mucus and blood came out. Feels like I have dried boogers in my nose but I think that is the stitches. I did notice two little white fishing line things in the snot I am guessing that is stitches. Not sure if that is good. I have no bleeding just feeling stuffy and occasionally get migraine headaches. Not sure yet if this was the best decision. I had septoplasty, turbines removed, infection suckered out and sinuses opened. The only time they told me to use nasal spray was if I was bleeding super bad. Besides the stuffy nose I feel like I could go back to work. I just wish my post op was sooner.

Hello,

So I thought I'll give a up to date review on this operation I had 3 operations done on the same day

1. Septoplasty of nose
2.functional endoscopic sinus surgery
3. Submucous diathermy to turbinate of nose

All completed on 20th October 2015 so it's been 6 days now.

Ok so let's start.
When I went into the day surgery I expected to be out within a couple of hours and i was just really worried about the post op pain because I do not do well at all with pain really don't cope well.

But after my operation I didn't even feel my nose or pain the first thing I felt was my throat! It was soo soo dry and so sore not unbearable sore but just uncomfortable. I ended up having to stay at the hospital over night because my lungs were filled with water from the tube so they didn't think it was safe for me to go home that day so I ended up going home around 24hours after I had the op I went in on Tuesday around 2pm and left the hospital on Wednesday around 1pm.

I have dissolavble nasal packs in I don't know how long it takes for this to dissolve I will find this out today.

So far I still have no taste or smell and i also am completely blocked in my nose. I am hoping that by time these nasal packs dissolve I will be able to breathe a little bit.

My nose was really swollen the first days but from yesterday day 5 I have seen the swelling go down a little bit. Luckily as it was all inside my nose there is no visible bruising.

Yes you can expect little sleep I'm still sleeping upright as sleeping lying down is just so uncomfortable and i feel it gives me a running nose also you will be up alot due to a very dry throat so I'm waking up every 20mins to take a sip of water which then means I'm going toilet a lot more throughout the night it's a real pain!..

I'm eating in small quantities and drinking with a straw.. You don't really have a normal appetite because you can't smell or taste but make sure you eat

The first couple of days I felt a bit dazed still I think that was part of my medication I am just sleeping sleeping sleeping. Be prepared to be soo soo bored I can not wait to go back to work! It's so bloody boring sitting at home.

What's re annoying is feeling mucus the in my.nose and you cant blow it or wipe it it's disgusting and it irritates your nose you just want to blow it and give your nose a good clean but you can't.

I feel I am finally starting to feel better which I am happy about.today I will go for a walk in the park to get some air.

I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction in Sept 2015. I was told after my final follow-up 2 months later with the surgeon that it would take 6 months to a year before my nose would fully recover and that the symptoms of burning and nagging sensitivity would disappear.

Had a Septoplasty/Turbinate reduction on Wednesday ( now Sunday )... Day of and after just felt drugged up. Not much pain honestly. Unfortunately by Thursday night started getting chills. Friday spent feeling like a Mac truck hit me. Uber congested still dripping goo but felt sick. Ended up calling on call doc and was told unless I had a fever or swelling of my face it was probably secondary viral infection. Saturday felt a bit better and now Sunday feel like c**p again. My checkup isn't until Tuesday so just sitting and waiting through this fog. Nose isn't dripping but is super congested. I have straw like splints and can sorta breathe through them but they are clogged like my nose. I'm sorta feeling like something isn't right up there but since there is no fever I am being told to just to sit tight. Ugh ... Must say this isn't what I expected. It's not maybe everyone's experience but let me tell you that having surgery and getting a viral infection at the same time is about as miserable as you can imagine. I will update later after my doc visit to let you know if there was a different conclusion ( viral as opposed to surgery infection )

Hi my names Gareth and I had my septoplasty and turbinates operation on Monday just gone and my nose is tender and I still can't breathe properly through my nose yet but I'm using Vicks under my nose and having a bath at the same time as this combination works well as the vicks and steam from the bath goes up your nose it loosens all the dryed mucus and blood and after the bath I use neilsmed sinus rinse kit to flush out any of the existing mucus or blood that is still up there maybe this might help relieve the headache and pressure and also I take two cocodomol 500mg every 5 hrs but you can only take so many in a day so please read before taking them I hope thishelps you all and remember that in the long run it can only get better never lose hope and try to keep your mind occupied as I have so that it takes things off your mind good luck guys
