I am a 73 year old male in UK and now day 16 after my HALO procedure and 3 mucopexy. All I can say is that things do get better! For the first few days it was agony especially peeing and the first few BMs were painful. Warm water bath or shower afterwards helped soothe and calm the area and the aching discomfort down below - which persisted for about 1 1/2 hour after a BM - was eased by lying down. A mistake I made at first was not taking as much pain medication as prescribed; I soon changed!. Important to take the pain relief.  It does not take it all away but enables you to function sort of normally.  Unless you have been through a haemorrhoid procedure it is difficult to explain/understand the discomfort level but again, all I can say is that things do get better and I am finally feeling able to start living normally again. Best wishes for all facing this or not yet fully recovered.

Hemorrhoid Surgery ...in China...

Hello fellow sufferers,

since so many of you shared their experiences I thought I might do the same. I am male, 29, healthy, a bit overweight but do lots of exercise and watch what I eat.

After an especially painful flareup with blood shooting out of my behind for almost two weeks with every bowel movement, I went to see a doctor to have it checked out. I have had hemorrhoids since my teens. 10 years ago I tried rubber band ligation, didn't work. Since then I just used ointments, lots of different ointments which sometimes provided relief.

I have been living in China for the past 7 years to study and then work, won't be going home for one more year, so can only do the whole thing here with a local doctor. The first doctor said he would just cut them away and stitch me up. The second time I went to a specialist and after a checkup he offered another treatment, using low temperature (40 – 70 degrees Celsius) plasma to cut and cauterize them away. According to him I had 2 internal and external, one huge (the biggest they have ever seen, like a thumb) internal coming out every time I have a BW.

I researched the method on-line and could only find lots of information in Chinese, but NOTHING on it in English. Called a specialist in Germany and he had never heard of it either. It is a minimally invasive procedure, doc promised I can go home the same day and start working the next. Fast recovery, doctor promised that in only about 7 days I could have a normal life again. Minimal blood loss, no damage to my anus, no special prep needed before and after the surgery….so much for the theory…

After lots of consideration and the prospect of getting rid of this nuisance, I went through with the procedure and now I am on day 3. It cost me 3000 CNY, the surgery itself was painless, gave me a shot in the spine and some local anesthesia. I was conscious all the time, heard them joking about the size of one hemorrhoid…After the surgery they showed me what they cut out, 4 pieces of flesh in total, one huge, two medium and a small one, they even let me take pictures. Surgeon said to expect 10 days recovery time. Surgery itself took about 20 min, then resting room with IVs for 3 hours. After I was able to pee (took 3 hours and 2 liters of water) they let me go home. The pain was steadily increasing at that point, with the anesthesia from the operation wearing off. By the time I was ready to leave it was getting unbearable. I asked for some pain meds and they just gave me a shot of local in my anus, which didn’t seem to have any effect. Told me to drink lots of water, eat fruit and prevent constipation and diarrhea at all cost. China is very restrictive with narcotics, especially pain medicine…so without ANY painkillers the first night was HELL. Throbbing, burning and bloating from gas and the gauze they left in.

Day 1: Surprisingly, after I woke up in the late morning the pain was bearable, just like a flare-up I used to have. Could sit and walk around, no big problems. Went to the hospital at around noon where they took out the dressing, gave me a sitz bath with Chinese medicine, cleaned the wounds and gave me an antibiotic suppository. The first day was OK, I could walk around, took a 2 hour walk in the evening. Still felt painful and uncomfortable, still no pain meds and also no anti-inflammatory drugs, but pain level was not much higher than the times when I got a blood clot in my external roid, which used to happen once or twice every year in the past. I had my first bowel movement in the evening, was painful but bearable, a spat the size of a subway cookie and the consistency was like chunky mashed potatoes. That day I ate vegetables, some whole grain bread, nuts, a protein shake with two bananas and other fruit.

Day 2: Had two big BM in the morning, painful and bloody but still bearable. Did a sitz bath at home, cleaned the wound and took the antibiotics suppository. I could have gone to the hospital again and they would have done it for me, but have to work and don’t want to pay so much money for a simple procedure which I can do by myself. While administering the suppository I felt several lumps inside, about pea sized and also noticed a flap of skin hanging out. Called the doctor, he said it’s normal. That afternoon the pain came back again so I bought some Ibuprofen by myself and some Chinese hemorrhoid ointment to “grease my anus”. Always a little blood around my anus, I just wedge a gauze pad between the cheeks to soak it up. After the ibuprofen kicked in I felt better, dulled the pain but not the uncomfortable feeling. Ate whole grain sandwiches, fruit, oats and a protein shake.

Day 3: Woke up in pain, the pain is in the lower left side, my penis feels kind of numbed by it…20min later I had a BM, bloody and a little explosive. Pain went away a little, and then came again and 10 min later another bigger BM. The second BM had less blood and pain, but still messy. Sitz bath, suppository and shower later I am at work. Feels like there is another blood clot down there, stabbing pain…but bearable.

To sum it up, all of what I am experiencing is similar to others (blood, pain, lumps inside, blood clot…). Gassy most of the time, don’t take any stool softeners, except for to bananas every day. Except for two Ibuprofen a day and one antibiotics suppository no other drugs. So far so good…

They want me to go to their hospital and have them do the sitz bath, suppository and wound cleaning. They also want me to do a treatment where they stuff some medicine up there and use microwaves to get it to melt and have my tissues absorb it. Never heard of it before, also quite expensive, anybody heard about something like that before? I did my surgery at a private hospital, in China this means expensive; they will try to get as much money as possible from you, including prescribing some “unneeded” treatments and medications, so I am a little skeptical and opt for doing it myself. From what I read most of you, even with open wounds don’t go back to the hospital for extra treatment the days following surgery? I am a little worried about infection though, which is why I am considering having them do it occasionally, which will cost me between 200 and 500 CNY. The accumulated treatment afterwards seems to be more expensive than the surgery, which only cost 3000 CNY. That’s how they make money…

If anybody is interested, I will update my progress.

Cheers,
Robert

Well, had round 2 today. Another thrombosed external (first was in 2011), except this one was much larger at about the size of my thumb.

Quite frankly, I think the worst part of the whole ordeal is the period of time where the local anesthesia wears off, and the several hours immediately after. The burn is worse than the original pain that sends you to the butt doc in the first place. First time I had it done I drove myself...big mistake. The local anesthesia wore off half way home, and I'm driving down the road with one cheek jacked about 6 inches off the seat. Had my wife drive me this time. After about 12 hours when everything calms down, its not so bad (other than the fist size wad of gauze in between the cheeks......and the tape.....doc used really sticky tape...may want to shave your rear before you go).

So, just have to get through a couple BM's, clean up well, couple soaks, oh....buy some non-adherent gauze to pack in there afterwards so you don't ruin your khakis. At least for a couple days or so.

I had my surgery 4 days ago. Leading up to this procedure I was extremely nervous because of what I researched and knowing the pain. I have always had a very high tolerance to pain so thought it wouldn't be as bad for me...well I was wrong! Right after surgery I went home feeling pretty good but then found out that's because they numb you! My main issue is BM my Dr wanted me on a normal diet and wanted a BM the second day. That didn't happen. Long story short I couldn't go. I called Dr and he said to drink milk of magnesium every 4 hours until I go. Well after the 4th dose I now have diariah!!! Very painful burning! I went at least 10X already! Any suggestions on how to get this to stop please!!!

You guys should avoid oxycodon. That is a terrible doctor to prescribe it, as it constipates you. It even says so on the label. Do not go back to that guy. You should be taking a stool softener 2-3 times a day. Eat tons of bran and your stool should almost be liquid and cause no pain. I had two surgically removed at my primary care office. The lidocaine injection os the worst part, otherwise not too bad. Also, take a sitz bath 3x daily. Hope everyone feels better.

This thread makes me feel like I'm not alone. You truly do have to suffer in silence. I had the worst bowel movement ever in my life this morning. I probably damaged everything that was repaired it was so bad. Not looking forward to the next one. I took dieters tea today. We will see how that goes. I've already taken one week off. I'm going to take another. God get me through this.

I have entered into my 3rd week of post surgery and my symptoms are exactly the same as you have described above.
My doctor did exactly the same and said that after surgery (THD Mucopaxy) you will recover in 3 to 4 days which is absolutely a lie. Every day when you wake up in the morning its like a drill that you have to go through and cannot be avoided then further miserable of 3 to 4 hours of pain. After BM sitz baths definitely give you relief with application of Ladocaine. My question is how long you have to suffer? I assumed that after surgery it will be all over and live my life like a normal person.
I believe this is the most painful surgery (post surgery) ever but on positive side think about the pain which you had pre surgery and compare the intensity of pain post surgery. Definitely you are much better.
May God bless every one and give speedy recovery to those who are suffering every day.

I am post-op 7 days. I had prolapsed external and internal. My surgeon said the internal were rather large, so I have 2 large internal incisions.
Last night was the first night I did not wake every 2 hours to take pain med. Felt ok this morning, until I felt the urge to have a bm. This ALWAYS throws me down for an extended amount of time. The pain is excruciating. Also, I always jump immediately in the tub and rinse with our hand held shower head. This gives immediate relief to the outside, but not the inside.Fortunately, my surgeon has me taking senna, colace, miralax, mineral oil, and I am eating fibrous foods. Was told I could start a regular diet right away. Honestly, i eat breakfast, and little thereafter.
Started on ibuprofen yesterday, to see if my bowels would be better without the narcotic. The narcotic does not seem to work anyway.
Like many of you, I thought I had a high threshhold for pain. I just turned 43, am active, eat a good diet with little carbs and sugar, but this is, by far, thee most awful thing I have experienced where pain is concerned. I have had 4 children, the last one without medication.
I am going to try Coconut Oil and a heating pad, as I read in an earlier post. Hoping to not have another week of little activity...

I am a diabetic. I had undergone open hemorrhoidectomy (MM procedure) to remove 03 interno-external hems. One of the hems was thrombosed and the remaining 02 were grade III. My surgery was performed by one of the best Colo-rectal Surgeon of my city and in one of the best / Premium Hospitals. It was a day care procedure wherein I was admitted at 0700 Hrs, surgery was performed around 1100 Hrs and I was discharged at 1800 Hrs after I had tolerated water and also after passing urine.

Today is my post operative day 42 ( I have completed six weeks). My present condition is quite miserable. I have BM in the morning at around 6.30 am. I have pain while passing BM. The last part of my BM is covered in 2 to 3 drops of blood. I feel like my anus is being stretched / expanded. After BM immediately I have sitz bath with betadine liquid for 20 minutes. The pain subsides a bit.

I am pain free for 30 to 45 Minutes after this.

BUT THEN the pain starts (around 0800 Hrs) and it is horrible. I am unable to sit / stand / walk. I have to take 2 pain killers Paracetamol and tramadol and sit in warm sitz bath atleast once every half an hour and after that the pain subsides after 3 to 4 hours.

So by 12 Noon I am pain free and bit OK.

I want to know if any body else has faced this problem ? I asked my surgeon, he says that this is normal and healing is taking place... but a little slowly. My present Fasting Glucose is 125 and PP is 155 and HbA1c is 7.5.

Please help / advice.

Hi!I had hemorrhoids surgery,Haemorrhoidectomia sec.Milligan-Morgan ,10 days ago in Serbia. Now,I feel well. This is my experience:Surgery is performed under the general anesthesia.I had internal and external hemorrhoids which I recived after pregnancy. It was 20 years ago...After surgery I was one day in hospital and I recived analgesic Diclofen.3 rd and 4th day after surgery my pains were not so pronounced, exept when I have BM,than I take ibuprofen. My first BM was the first day after surgery. But it was so little. My big BM was 6th day after surgery.I have a constant pressure on the anus and it annoys me.and my doctor left me a bit of tissue outside of the anus, which is strained as when I had external hemorrhoids. He said me that he must leave me that part because, after the recovery would not be tightened.Dr.adviced me to,after each BM wash with warm water and mild soap. Also he has prescribed a mild massage with Hyperici oil and Flogocid cream, per stroke anesthetic gel Xylocain. He also told me that the first meals must be liquid:soups, vegetables soups, tee, stewed fruits..and than gradually introduce mashed potatoes, rice, applesauce, boild fish and chicken, prunes, figs, yogurt, cereals, polenta and other fibrous food.
Here I read for a sitting bath wich I apply, but instead of warm water I use chamomile tee. Also applies squatting instead of sitting on the toilet.

Reading everyone's posts has given me some comfort that my hemorrhoidectomy was pretty standard and with somewhat average results.

I’m a 42 year old male in pretty good health. I don’t smoke or eat a lot of c**p. 6’1 and my weight is around 190lbs. I could stand to lose 15 pounds. I have had problems with hemorrhoids since I was 22 years old. I blame Army food. Probably within the last 10 years I have suffered from internal hemorrhoids that become prolapsed after each bowel movement. I gently move them back into place with a baby wipe or PH pad. This has been the practice for many years until now!

I went to the emergency room last Monday morning early AM because I had an external thrombosed hemorrhoid that after five days wouldn’t go away and the pain was terrible. I tried everything creams, suppositories, etc. nothing worked. So last Monday the general surgeon came in with a couple of resident surgeons. One of the residents was an attractive female in her mid 20’s. Normally in a situation like this I would have been embarrassed. However, the pain foreshadowed any embarrassment that I might have had. The Doc’s gave me a couple choices. I could take some painkillers and wait for the swelling to subside or they could give me some local anesthesia and make an excision and remove the blood clot. I opted for the blood clot removal procedure. To be honest the worst part of this procedure are the injections around the anus. In my case the Doc instructed the attractive female resident through the majority of my procedure while another resident and a couple nurses stood by and watched. She gave me at least five or six injections of painkillers which gave me sensory overload and left me nearly passed out and in tears. Up until now I thought that the injections were the worst part. Within an hour I was sewn up, cleaned up and on my way to work. Before I left they were nice enough to give me proctofoam, 800mg Motrin and a tube of lidocaine cream to take home with me.

Fast forward to this past Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving). I woke up at 2am in ridiculous pain and wet from what turned out to be blood that soaked through the gauze. I had my wife drive me back to the emergency room because something wasn’t right. The same doc that instructed my surgery on Mon happened to be on shift when I came in Wed. He took one look and said we’re taking you to the OR. The move to the OR took a few hours so in the meanwhile the nurse controlled my pain with a dose of morphine. As it turns out the Mon removal of my external thrombosed hemorrhoid caused hemorrhaging in multiple internal hemorrhoids which all became swollen and prolapsed overnight. I went from having one golf ball size external hemorrhoid on Monday to multiple ones on Wed.

In the OR I was given anesthesia and then moved to the operating table. The last thing I remember is the Doc putting an oxygen mask on me and telling me everything would be.... A few hours later around 1am Thanksgiving morning I woke up in the recovery room feeling absolutely no pain. That feeling would be short lived! All the Docs and nurses came in and told me what I could expect during my recovery. “Some pain and or discomfort during BM” bleeding, nausea, etc, etc.. The problem was I was so out of it and still under the effects of anesthesia that I don’t remember half of what they told me.

My wife came to the hospital to pick me up and I was released about 12 hours after my surgery. This time around the Docs in all their wisdom gave me a small pharmacy of narcotics, creams, pads and laxatives. I felt pretty confident that I would be able to ride this out without much pain. I made it home just in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Definitely one T-day I will not soon forget. All was well until halfway through dinner and I had to excuse myself from the table. I endured my first spasm right there at the dinner table. Uncontrollable and without warning it shot up my rectum like a lightning bolt. It literally made me jump out of my seat. This is no exaggeration. I excused myself hobbled to the bathroom and ran a hot bath. The sitz bath actually somewhat worked for me. Except I didn’t just stick my rump in there, I jumped in the bath and just sat there for 20 min. The hot water stopped my spasms. After a half hour and a valium I was able to return to my guest.

WARNING Please excuse the graphic details. My first BM happened early Friday morning almost 24 hours post surgery. I wasn’t sure if I was experiencing pressure, gas or the beginnings of a BM but I was freaking out. I started passing gas sometime Friday afternoon. This in itself was excruciating! My rectum was so swollen that I was barely able to actually pass gas. All that pressure was making dizzy with pain. When I couldn’t take it anymore I hovered over the toilet with one cheek on the seat and pushed. First I pushed gently, it hurt bad but I felt something about to happen. Then the pain subsided for a few milliseconds and I did it! I didn’t have time to celebrate because I was too busy shaking and moaning with pain! I fortunately had the bathtub full of hot water which I jumped into looking for some escape from the now pulsating pain. It worked! Not right away but after ten min or so of shaking and wrestling with the pain it had come down to a level that I could handle. I was incredibly disappointed by the quantity and size of my first BM. All that suffering only produced a small amount of poop and a large amount of blood.

I tried alternating meds to manage pain. Most made me feel sick and I would get cold sweats and ache all over. For me oxycodone worked better than percocet. I don’t think the 800mg Motrin did much to control the spasms. However the Motrin did dull the pain. The valium I took for the spasms and to be honest I don’t think it worked either. They also gave me Tylenol EQ. The Tylenol definitely made me feel sick and produced some cold sweats. Oxy, Percocet and Motrin worked best for me.

I'm sure everyone’s pain level is different. I have always thought that I have a high tolerance for pain. However on day 2 post op I had my second and worst BM, I found my tolerance level and far exceeded it. The second was by far the worst. Lots of blood and it seemed the laxatives did nothing to soften the golf ball size poop. This one hurt so bad I passed out for a second. I can not describe the pain after passing the BM. I had the bath ready for this one and it did little to sooth or bring the pain down to a tolerable level. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to take in plenty of fiber. I don’t recall if I skipped a day of fiber intake or what but that second BM made me contemplate death for a brief second. I was sore for a couple hours after the second BM. I upped my fiber intake after this bathroom trip.

I had my third and fourth BMs on day four. The third had me shaking and crying and there was noticeably much more blood. I called my wife in for moral support on this one. It just seemed the pain kept getting worse and worse during each BM. This evening I felt a BM coming on. Again I prepped the bath and had the tucks wipes ready to go. After the last three I was ready for the worst. To my surprise this was the least painful BM yet. It was also the largest and there was little blood in the bowl. The sitz bath helped a lot to sooth the spasms and pain.

Here are a few things that I have found helps reduce the pain. Taking a Sitz bath has helped my immediate recovery after a BM. I use my wife’s pads, sanitary napkins or whatever you call them to keep from bleeding or oozing all over the bed and my pants. The gauze the hospital gave me would just fall out. I’m not 100% sure it works but I also use Emu-blue cream to help sooth the anal area. I just spread a liberal amount in the pad and stick up there. If anything the emu cream fills the pain. Tucks pads to wipe with or wipes with witch hazel.

My biggest complaint on day 4 post op, are the spasms. I cannot figure out how to stop or minimize their strength. When they hit it's like a lightening bolt. Makes me jump in agony every time.

Day 5 post op. I have already had three BMs today and it feels like I’m getting ready for a fourth. I may have overdosed on the laxatives. The BMs are getting a little easier but far from painless. There is still much prep work that goes into each process. Running a hot bath, getting the tucks pads ready, making sure the wife keeps the kids away from the master bath. Then the five to ten minutes of mental preparation. I don’t sit down on the seat until the last few seconds before launch. I try to push mentally before I push physically. It seems to work for me. Number five was a disappointment! A lot of pressure and tummy grumbles made me think it would be a substantial BM. Not the case. The pain is getting a little less each time. Mind you I took a percocet about three hours ago. Even still the most painful part of the BM process is during the five to ten minutes after completion. Wipe with a tucks pad and hit the sitz bath. The pain will slowly diminish.

I am 43 and had it done 30 days ago. Every day was a challenge for me to deal with pain and discomfort. Oh! Can’t deacribe in words... maybe my healing time was delayed as I was being operated under emergency stage. Still having one wound open in 5th week and advised courses of antibiotic in 2 consecutive weeks. Took Flomax for urine retention and what not... kindly someone advise if I should take Daflon only and stop taking other medicines. thanks
