Hi there - I know this thread is quite old but seems people have been suffering for a long time with this issue. I've been having the same symptoms for the last two months and have been admitted to hospital three times in that time period - always with the usual tests (x-rays, CT scans, bloods etc). Each time my white blood cell count is very high (18000, 17000 and the last time at 24000) and I have fluid in my abdomen - called ascites. The first time they diagnosed me with appendicitis and I had an appendectomy to remove it. Turns out later that that diagnosis was incorrect and I had the surgery for nothing. The next time I was admitted and they performed a laparoscopy and colonoscopy to see what was going on and drained the fluid for biopsy. Results of all came back 'relatively' normal (doctor's words). Was sent home with no diagnosis that time. Went to see a gastroenterologist physician who said he would get back to me after viewing all my test results etc. A week later and no response from him and by then I had been admitted again with another attack. At this point we phoned the surgeon who had conducted my laparoscopy/colonoscopy as he was the only contact number we had. He then took me on as his patient (he is a general surgeon) and did some more tests and drained some more fluid off my abdomen (via needle and ultrasound). He came up with a diagnosis of Eosinophilic Ascites - a condition related to eosinophilia which is extremely rare. Treatment for this is a high dosage of cortisteroids over a two month period. I am about to start this treatment although am skeptical about the diagnosis given the rarity. I will update this post in time.
