Hello,
When I drink alcohol I always have to take an allergy pill because my nose stuffs up. Recently, I have woken up with very swollen lips and are bright red all around my lips. They are very painful and itchy. The swelling has gone down, they are not as bad but some of the affects are still there. Around my mouth where it was red, (past the borders of my lips) it's still red and somewhat peeling. I haven't had any alcohol since that happened. When, if ever, is my face going to get back to normal?
Hello.
Based on what you've described, it sounds like you may have experienced an allergic reaction to something. Reactions to alcohol or substances within alcoholic beverages are possible, though they're not common.
Possible reasons for allergic reactions from alcoholic beverages:
-
Alcohol Intolerance: Some people lack an enzyme that helps metabolize alcohol, leading to reactions like nasal congestion, skin flushing, or digestive issues.
-
Ingredients in Alcoholic Beverages: It's not always the alcohol itself but other ingredients in alcoholic beverages that can cause allergic reactions. These can include sulfites, histamines, wheat, barley, rye, hops, yeast, and more.
-
Other Allergens: It's also possible that something else was the culprit. For instance, if you consumed mixed drinks or cocktails, any added ingredients, mixers, or garnishes could have triggered the reaction.
-
Lip Swelling and Redness: Swollen lips and redness around the mouth after drinking alcohol might suggest a more severe allergic reaction. This could be a form of angioedema, which is swelling beneath the skin often occurring with hives.
As for your recovery:
-
The duration of recovery from an allergic reaction can vary. Mild reactions may resolve within a day or two, while more severe reactions can take longer.
-
It's essential to avoid the suspected allergen, in this case, alcohol or the specific type of drink you consumed.
-
Over-the-counter antihistamines can help with some allergic reactions, but it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any medication.
Given that you've experienced a severe allergic reaction, it would be a good idea to consult an allergist, who can provide guidance tailored to your situation.
