Id like to start running and there are several things that confuse me. For example, what is the difference between running long and running fast concerning the effect this sport has on the muscles? Which of these two should I pick and how to practice it? Ive never run before and now I want it as a recreational activity. Im thirty years old, so tell me if its not too late to start now.

Its never too late to start with any sports activity. It can only improve your fitness and physical condition. Since youre going to be a recreational runner, meaning you wont be trying to break any record, long running is what you need. Fast running is not efficient in general, and its practiced only as part of preparation for one of the short running races, such as, 100, 200 and 400m. The sprinters train hard throughout the year and only a short time before the season starts they run faster. Fast running is a very exhausting activity and cant be achieved on a regular basis. So, just try running longer distances and make it slow.
