My 18 year old son is training running. He has been doing it for a year now and he recently started participating in 5k races. Unfortunately, his running times are not that great. He seems a little depressed, I cannot seem to explain to him that participating is more important than winning, my words are not reaching him. Is there anything I can do to help him?

There could be several reasons for your son's bad running times. First of all, he could be making some mistakes during the race, considering strategy and rearranging his strength. His leg work might not be that great, even bad rhythm of breathing could be the cause. Also, perhaps he's neglecting to eat properly and thus making his energy stores inadequate. Find out what is the cause and eliminate it.
