My best friend feels hardness in the right ear and dizziness on the right side only. It has been happenning for long now. He is 42 yrs old. He has got a CT scan done which indicates SCLEROSIS OF THE MASTOID. What is this? Is it a serious problem? He has no pain but hardness and dizziness; he actually feels sleepy on one side. He gets the feeling of water in his right ear. Some 2-3 years earlier the doc said it is vertigo. What is it? What's the treatment for this? ........Sangu........

Hallo,

If I am not mistaking this condition most often happens in children with Down syndrome. Maybe I am wrong here but it is little strange that he is diagnosed with this condition. How long has he been having this problem? I think that he should search another doctor and seek for other diagnosis because this condition of his can be caused by several things. This diagnosis that he has is not that likely with all the symptoms in place. I am not sure what the actual treatment for this is but he has to continue with the tests to find if there is something else wrong with him. I not sure was this helpful in any way.

Regards,

Karen

I'm 52 and have just been diagnosed with sclerotic mastoid. I had suffered from long term infections in the past and most likely the cause. I'm not sure where we're going from here if it is to be removed or it stays.

I saw your reply and actually adults with RRMS can have mastoid sclerosis as well.
