Interesting observations by Guest on 04/25/09 who went to the endocrinologist and was diagnosed with Hashimotos and Vitamin D deficiency. My self-diagnosis led me to Vitamin D deficiency as well. Here is my story: My sore ear cartilege/cartilage has gone on for years - mostly sore when sleeping and I have tried all sorts of pillow solutions including foam with an ear-hole cut out. Last year I noticed that it started with a vengeance in November. I looked back over my diet and habits and found no changes that would explain it -- except for the time change and lack of evening sunlight when I was walking home from work. I searched the internet and found studies indicated that bunnies who were deprived of Vitamin D developed floppy ear cartilege. I started to take Vitamin D supplements -- at only the lowest level-- and the improvement was immediate. That very night my ears stopped hurting. I slept. I have since figured out that I also need to take Calcium pills at the same time.

My ears began to hurt again this September and it took me a few days to remember that I needed more Vitamin D. As a side note, I found that Vitamin D did a lot more than stop my ear pain -- my mood was not affected as much by Seasonal Affective Disorder and I got through the winter without the mouth cankers that I often had. I hope this helps someone. :-)

So weird I stumbled upon this site. I was researching some issues I am currently having with a change in scalp odor, weight gain and neck pain. I went to the doctor mostly concerned about the acute change in my scalp condition thinking I had some sort of infection and she found nothing...not even a flake of dandruff. I am getting fasting blood work done on Wednesday to check my thyroid (in the past I've had it checked due to acute change in weight and nothing has come from it). Whoever mentioned Hashimoto's here really hit home ("the common symptoms are fatigue, depression, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, forgetfulness, muscle weakness, puffy face, dry skin and hair, constipation, muscle cramps, and increased menstrual flow.") I have MOST of those symptoms...and have had complaints of tinnitus in the past and just this morning woke up with that burning ear pain in my left ear cartilage not even thinking there could be some sort of link. In fact, I didn't even mention the ear pain to the doctor...but now I might bring it up and see if there is a link. She also said that if we couldn't figure it out she would send me to an endocrinologist to get a full work up. I have also had some GI issues in the past and had a colonoscopy in 2007 at the age of 27 that showed nothing...being diagnosed with IBS because I don't think they really know what it is. I have also had issues with PMDD and have had Celiac's disease ruled out as well. I was on Yaz and that worked for a while until my insurance wouldn't pay for it anymore and they switched me to Ocella the generic. Didn't work for me so they put me on zoloft and I couldn't stand the brain zaps and weight gain so I begged to get off of it even though my doctor thought it was my thyroid. Now I'm dealing with thyroid symptoms again...it's just so weird. I feel like I should be on the show mystery diagnosis. I am a nurse and I have a fear of people thinking this is "all in my head" because I see many doctors/nurses/educators frown upon things like IBS and fibromyalgia because they are somewhat linked to depression. I'll keep you updated if I get any positive test results back.

I was unaware that IBS was also linked to depression. Can you tell me a little more about that? I wouldn't mind hearing it. Thanks!

I have been having this same problem for the past few years. I only decided just now to research on the internet. It's been getting worse. It happens 90% of the time with my left year, and occasionally with my right. It wakes me up in the middles of the night, aches for about 5-10 minutes, and feels like I just got hit in the ear with a baseball bat. VERY painful. When I put pressure on the cartlidge fold right above the opening it yields a similar pain as it does during the night, but fades when pressure is taken off.

hello there i am very relieved that i am not the only person who has this problem when i wake up in the night it almost feels like someone has nailed my head to the pillow and i have to slowly raise my head off my pillow and after a few minutes the pain has gone, i have it more in my left ear but my right ear isnt immune, the pain feels like its right in my middle ear. I also get ear ache if im out in the wind i thought this may all be ccnnected, i have asked my doctor about it but he shrugs it away (very annoying!)
So did anyone discover what the problem was?

I think that's very aonnoying as well! If you have a doctor who does that, get a new doctor. That's not an acceptable way to behave and it's poor bedside manner. I think you can do better. What do you think?

I've found a pillow for my ear problem- check it out at . It's a pillow designed for sleeping on my side with a hole cut out for my ear. Memory foam, too.

That osunds like a smart idea but what happens if you roll around like I do in your sleep? It doesn't sound like it would be effective--but is it? Le tme know!

I have the same problem, burning in and around one ear and the inability to lift it off the pillow because of the pain. I also find though that i can often pop my ears a couple of times consecutively and a drop of water comes out not always but i would say 95% of the time there is water. Sometimes the water doesnt come out until the morning after laying on the ear all night but when it does it often burns too. This makes me think that maybe there is somewhere the water is being blocked and causing problems. I have had the problem for about 5 years and I am 28. The doctor told me it was a problem with my jaw- c**p, thats why I am doing my own research.

In addition to the ear pain causing me to constantly flip from side to side throughout the night, every morning when I get up I have a little bit of flem that I cough out of my upper throat and also have to blow my nose. I'm thinking that I may have some sinus pressure due to allergies, which would also cause pressure in the ears and then the weight/pressure of my head on the pillow pushing down on my ears is what is causing the pain. Having lost faith in the docs, this is my own diagnosis as I am otherwise healthy as can be and test negative for everything. Don't have any of the issues that anyone else has posted; just allergies and minor sinus pressure. I just ordered a new pillow and am going to take some allergy meds for a week to see if these changes make a difference. Good luck to you all! I feel your pain!

Like others, I'm glad I've found this thread. I'm 31, male, otherwise fit and healthy but also don't have the greatest blood circulation.

I found my ear pain issues started when I first bought a memory foam pillow. I just assumed the material was too firm, so changed to a softer down pillow. The problem now is due to the lack of support, my face slides into the pillow. As a result, I'm not only getting neck / shoulder pain, but because of the angle of my face on the pillow, I have an enormous crease mark diagonally across each side of my forehead. It was only visible for a little while after getting out of bed at first, but is now permanently visible! I have people asking me all the time if I have scars across my head. So I'm now faced with the choice of permanent disfigurement or agony throughout the night.

I've just discovered today that there's a new type of pillow on the market made out of "Visco Elastic" and am going to go check it out this weekend. I'll post back if I buy it and what the results are like.

Good luck to everyone solving their issues.

Has anyone gotten the middle ear testing done and has there been any correlation? I too have been having the same problem for the past few years. I've been so scared about it being something really serious I have been putting off getting it checked again. I saw a ENT doctor and they didn't see anything wrong and was told to come back for xrays if problem persisted. Lately I have been feeling a little dizzy here and there and am now wondering if there is a relation. Please if anyone has found out any new information let me know. Thank you!

:$ :'( I have had the same problem for the past year on the right ear. I though my earing was to tight. However now that I dont wear them anymore I still have the problem. Last month it was so painfull, a pimple appear inside. the second day after the pimple appeared, I could not ear anymore cause the pimple was so big. On the third or 4 th day, the pimple birthted. I can tell you that I was pressing the liquid out and a lot of clear puss was draining.
Now the same pain is starting again, but it doesnt feel just to be on the outside cartilage. It also seems to come from the inside as well.
my cartilage has been hurting a week straight. I was expecting a pimple to drain the swollen ear out, but this time no pimple.

I am 6 months pregnant. So, NO X-tray fro me and no CT scan. However I am going to call my ENT (ear, neck throat) tomorrow and get to the bottom of this. :-S :O

OK.
It is not my gold earings, however I am not changing my pillows. I already got new ones last months anyway.
No, what I am doing is treating the problem from the root.
i have taken a few appointments
1) Endocrinologist: will find out about thyroid and parathyroid. I will also only mention the ear problem at first and let him speach
2) ENT. my ent has helped me with my allergies. He made me do allergie test, to find out that i was allergic to all five accounts of dust mites. When I first meet him, i had a box of kleenex under my arm because my eyes, nose and throad would not stop running to the point were i had to have a kleenex box under my arm. I took the allergy shots, wich could be somewhat dangerous at first, but will immune your system against dust mite. the procedure last 5 year, i only did 4 cause i an pregnant now. I feel some symptoms are coming back but i will restart all over again since i never felt better in my entire when i was doint it. the liquid they inject under your skin is dust mites powder in water or so at a small quantities at first and later they increase it. To help also eradicate symptom of dust mite allergies, remove your carpets, tapisrie, curtains. Wash your clothes after 2 wear or 3 maximum. Wach your floor very often. Google dust mites to understand it. Wach your beding every week. BUY pillow antiallergic envelop and matterass envelop as well since the dust mites thrive in them.
( not taking a serious care of dust mites allergy could result in: collapse of the lungs, becoming athmatic, or develop chronic rhinitis).
Anyway, my ENT is someone i want to see. he might knows about that ear problem
3) Dermatologist to have him check my ear skin but also my entire body to make sure i dont have something growing due to sun exposition.
4) I did not make an appt with this one yet: the Neurologist. they refered me to my ENT who will refer me to the neurologist if he does not know what's up[.

We need to attack the problem at it's very own roots. I will have the docs test me also for vitamins and minerals.
I will take vit D and Calcium once i give birth.

That pain has to go. Mentally, i do not want to be the slave of pain.
It has got to go. I have sleeps to do.
