I'm so stoked that I finally found something that I can relate to. I've been reading up on this for months and all I can find is like "take advil and shut up" kind of answers. I am going to the doctor and that person is going to sit and listen to me about everything regardless of their schedule tomorrow. Because I have no insurance so she better listen. I have had this epic pain severity for years, probably since I was 14 (I'm 24 now), that's 10 years and I'm really sick of it and it hurts for like hours and pain meds do NOTHING when you take them. It's only like the first day but its for like 3-8 hours that the pain doesn't want to go away and it throbs in like your legs and pelvis and stomach, and you do get diarrhea and nausea and dizziness. In addition to the other already repeated things, I'm hoping I will get some answers tomorrow. But I'm so thankful knowing I'm not alone. I just really hope this isn't too serious. :(

I have exactly the same, severe pain first day of my period literally can't walk or move sometimes nurofen plus or codeine won't even help. I have to lay down on my back with a heat pack for about 30mins then curl into a ball in all the pains constant for about 2hours! I have no children but often wonder about the pain of giving birth thinking nothing can be worse than these cramps. Still trying to figure mine out, I have 2 doctors male and female and they both thought I had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) then they said it was appendcitis (breifly) now their looking at endomentriosis which I'm pretty certain it is. There is definately a difference between bad cramps and debilitating cramps. As far as the pill goes i've been on a few and they make me either sick or have constant migraines yet to try yasmin though I may ask for it cause I hear its really good for you. But I suggest asking your doctor about endomentriosis better to check otherwise if you have it and leave it unnoticed you may have complications trying to concieve.

I have sort of the same thing. When I get my period the first day I have such bad cramps that I can'r move at all. Nothing seems to help the cramping except a hot bath and even then I'm in extreme pain. I also get flu symptoms, cold sweats, aching body, diareah, vomiting, and headache but the thing that really kills me is these cramps! I doubt my mom will let me on birth control so is there any otther options for me? I could really use some relief..

i also have thyroid problems, my pain was getting worse every month  and i kept going back to the doctor but no relief, i finally told him to do something or i was going to take street drugs, well at the same time i was telling him i did not think my thyroid meds were working, sure enough he did lab work and my meds were too STRONG, he cut back on my dose and the next two months i noticed my cramps were only half as bad, to where i just needed to add a little heat to my stomach, no pills. it has only been two months now since my meds have been lowered but wow what a difference,

I just wanted to comment on this post because I have had much experience with all of this and have had much different results. I'm just like many of you who have absolutely unbearable pain during/around their period. I'm pretty sure I have endometreosis. My mom had it and had the surgery and went through the whole thing, so I know exactly what it is. I've dealt with this for years and recently it just seems to keep getting worse and worse. I've been on birth control for the past 5 years, since I was 16. There's absolutely no way I could tolerate the pain if I wasn't on birth control. I've been on a couple different kinds of birth control, which is why I wanted to comment on this opinion of the depo shot. I was on the depo shot for about a year. Like I said, I've been on many different birth controls, and this was the only one that 100% took away the pain of being on my period. Simply because you don't get a period while you're on the shot. Now as for the comment that "you WILL gain weight" when you're on the shot, I completely disagree with that. If you're living an unhealthy lifestyle, this might contribute to weight gain, but I actually LOST weight while I was on the shot. I was super skinny, and I had no crazy side effects other than one. The only down fall I found from being on the shot was that I lost any and all sex drive that I had. Which I mean, if you're trying to go on the shot for "birth control" purposes, it's actually doing its job.

But the shot is not something you should be on for an extended period of time. It can cause bone loss/damage, and possibly cause infertility. Which is the main reason why I got off the shot after awhile. But if these effects didn't happen I can 100% say for sure I would be on this thing for life ha, it was the ONLY thing that got rid of my pain. I'm currently on the Nuvaring now. It helps a little bit, but like I said, it just keeps getting worse & worse. My periods are absolutely debilitating. I've tried the stupid "pain pill" that you're supposed to take before your period starts, it did nothing for me.

As far as "home remedies" go for me, the only thing that works is taking some Aleve. And that only helps the cramps. The unbearable knife jabbing pain in my back, hips, and legs, there's nothing that will help it. I'm about to call my gyno in the morning to make an appt to see if there's something else I can do. I'm ready to do the surgery if thats my last option. I'm sure you all understand how unbearable this pain is. I just wanted to comment and let everyone know that based on my own experiences, I thoroughly believe in birth control. I WOULD NOT be able to function without it.

I wish you all the best, I know how horrible this is. I wish I could send all of you a bottle of Aleve haha. If anyone ever comes up with a magic cure please also send it this way :) Sending everyone lots of love & hope! <3

Hi am 18 years old and I started having these horrible period pains and cramps at the age of 14. I have very bad abdominal pains on the first day I can barely eat or move from my bed and this lasts for 3 days along with the constant pain in my back and legs, also vomitting when I eat and this keeps me from my daily activities and I have to take days off from school and miss on a lot of work! And this worries me because next year I start college and I don't want to have days off because of my period. Any solutions or help? ..(ps: Iv tried many meds and pills to lessen the pain and warm packs on my stomach and drinking herbel tea and all kind of medications but nothing works). Should I just go ahead and see a doctor for my condition?

I wouldn't advise taking Yasmin. It cause cause severe blood clots, strokes, and heart problems no matter your age or size.

I am suffering from the same since many years, I am 31 now, I used to take pain killers which was sheer bliss, but now I stoppped it, as I got to know that painkillers are not good. I went to a doc today, she asked me the following -

1. are my periods regular ? Yes

2. does it pain before the bleeding ? No

3. Did I always have it ? Yes

She said that this seems normal and suggested another painkiller, then she did ask me to do a ultrasound but everthing was normal.

She said that the pain might happen due to narrow passage, but is cured after childbirth..

So the next time onwards, I am going to take the painkiller she suggested and have a normal day

PS: Sex in the recent days might help reduce the pain.. ;)

I am 34 and have recently had 2 episodes on day 1 of different periods (not back to back) when I had severe pain like this.

Both times, it begins with severe stomach cramps, which get increasingly worse until I am writhing around on the bed, trying desperately to find ANY position which stops the pain.  I cannot describe the pain, nor how horrible it is not to be able to escape it.  I can hardly speak and I don't want anyone to talk to me or touch me, because I need all my focus on bearing the pain.  I get pour sweat, and I get diarrhea or need to toilet (only once per episode), and I throw up (once again).  The second time all this happened, I also fainted.

But it only lasts about 1 hour on Day 1, and then I feel fine again.  (Although my stomach muscles hurt from all the cramping and I feel physically tired.)  I have no pain before my period starts, and only normal mild stomach cramps during the rest of it.  This has happened on 2 periods in the last 8 months, so it doesn't even happen on every period.

Both times, I have taken Nurofen.  When the pain stops, I'm never sure if this is the Nurofen kicking in or if it would only have lasted 1 hr anyway.

I have usually heavy and fast periods - they are very heavy the first 2 days, and then light for the next 2 days.

Also, I have noticed that both times this has happened, my period has been late by a few days.  (And no, I wasn't pregnant.)  It's as if a physical process which would have been gradual usually, has happened late and so in a sped-up way and caused agony.

I am not on birth control, although I have been on the pill in the past for a couple of years and I then switched to the mini-pill (progesterone only) for about 5 yrs.  I did not have problems like this on either pills and my periods were v light.  I am contemplating going back on the mini pill now.

From what I can read online, over-production of prostaglandins can cause this - but no one knows what causes this over-production.

This forum has been such a great help to me. today was the first day of my cramps and it was most undoubtedly the worst I've ever had. My symptoms are as follows:
Mild cramps 2-3 days prior.
On the first day, unbelievable abdominal pain, to the point where i throw up every time. I cry and scream out in pain, i'm curled up in bed just praying to the god i don't believe in to make it end....i have panic attacks, but that's probably because the pain is so unbearable i loose all sense of control. Every time i feel like someone's got to take me to the ER, but my self medication always puts me to sleep before i go that extreme. Also, when not consumed with the pain, I'm incredibly emotional, crying, irrational irritation, and feeling very attached and needy towards my husband (all at once).
But it only lasts one day, 6-12 hours. The rest of my period i have almost no pain at all.
My flow is heavy for a few days, light and then gone within 5 days.

And the pills i take and have taken aren't good on my liver at all -- i'm really looking for an alternative medicine (protein, vitamin B and accupuncture are all treatments i've read on this site today and will be trying in the near future).

When the pain starts coming (first day), by the time i've noticed it's too late to take a preemptive strike (as my periods are irregular, living with two other women). I take three ibiprophine and 2mg of xanax. No, it's not prescribed to me, don't need a lecture on that, but even with the ibiprophines the pain is so severe that i just have to put myself to sleep until it passes, which is the only reason i take it. Today after this dose i woke up two hours later, the pain building up until i was shaking, vomiting, screaming in pain and terrified. I took two more ibiprophine, and a hydrocodone 10, and 30 min later i feel great.

But i can't keep taking other peoples prescribed drugs, obviously. The bottle says not to exceed 6 ibiprophine in 24 hours, and I took five in four hours. I need a legal and preferably homeopathic treatment. Although if my doctor would perscribe me hydrocodone, i'd be fine with that. But i know most doctors i asked would think i was just trying to get high and wouldn't give it to me. Although i only need one a month, so i'm going to ask my doctor anyway.

Final note: I will NEVER get back on birth control. Other than being awful for your body, this never happened until after i got off of my birth control (Mononessa). It should only be a last resort.
