had an injury a couple of years ago during one of those zumba sessions and that's when i started feeling the sharp stabbing pain and clicking in my hip area. i was adviced that the only way to stop it is to undergo hip arthroscopy.

I have severe sharp pain in my left hip. It can be once a month or stop for several and all the sudden it hits. When it does, this is the only time I actually yelp in pain and grab for it. I can't stand straight just because I'm trying to grab my hip. I press on it to try to help the pain, but nothing. It is a pulsing pain, but not to my actual heartbeat, just random. I SUCKS big time!!! Looking for an answer as it is debilitating when it happens.

perhaps investigate entrapped femoral nerve - my hip/leg difficulties began with trouble sitting in car for long duration - took years to find the right person who was able to surgically release it

a hip labral tear......I have this same pain and I have asked other senior citizens in my bldg and it seems everyone knows about it but does not know why. I squat down and wait a few minutes and it will let up. Shepherd Spinal gave me an excerise that really helps. (LAY FLAT ON BACK, SLOWLY PULL FEET UP AND KEEP THEM ON THE FLOOR. TAKE LEFT LEG WITH HAND AND CROSS IT OVER THE RIGHT LEG (FEET REMAINS ON THE FLOOR) REACH BOTH HANDS THROUGH THE OPENING OF YOUR LEGS AND STRETCH OR YOU CAN PUT ONE HAND THROUGH THE OPENING OF YOUR LEGS AND THE OTHER HAND ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE LEFT LEG. REPEAT THE OTHER SIDE. iF YOU DO THIS EVERYDAY OR AT LEAST EVERY OTHER DAY THE PAIN WILL GET LESS AND LESS. THE PROBLEM IS THE PAIN WILL STOP AND YOU WILL FORGET TO DO THE EXCERISE.

I'm having the exact same issues...I also happened to be an EMT for several years (until i was 21 y/o...involved in a pretty nasty car accident..now 2 back surgeries and 4 years later). Anyways, I get intermittent episodes (completely random as far as I've been able to deduce over the last 2-3 years I've been getting them) of extremely intense stabbing pain which also feels to reside "in the ball and socket" of my hip (however, i can probably guess that your pain is actually on your side...hip pain is most commonly felt in the groin region since anatomically this is actually where your hip joint is located...where your leg joins your abdomen. my pain is in the "hip" but its actually more accurately located in my upper thigh/illac region...if this is the same for you then keep reading because we may have the same problem). i DO have nerve damage on the same side as the pain im describing, however the nerve damage i have is in the S1 nerve root (sciatic nerve) which runs down the back of the leg...i believe the nerve root which 'feeds' the part of the body where this stabbing pain occurs is either L3 or L4..neither of which I have any damage to ( or irritation of...at least not since my last MRI 3 or so months ago). Also, until several months ago I was still taking oxycodone (the dose i was on when I was d/c from the hospital after my last surgery was roughly 160mg oxycodone/day + 1200mg/day gabapentin for nerve pain) and even with the high doses of oxycodone and the gabapentin (Neurontin) I still had the same random stabbing pain that came with the same 10/10 intensity as it always does... the only difference I've noticed is that its happening somewhat more frequently and occasionally lasts longer than it ever had (before it would last 20-40 sec on avg, now avg is 1-2 min....im really hoping to solve this riddle soon...) my orthopedic surgeon has no idea where the pain could be coming from and his only guess (as were the guesses from a few other doctors/therapists) is that the source of my pain is muscle-related...as for which muscle and why its causing this pain, i've not currently identified that...best of luck

It's an IT band issue most likely. I have same problem and it is agonizing to the point where I would rather just crumble to the floor than put pressure on my right leg, knee, hip, anything. I workout almost daily and am in excellent physical shape. I notice the pain most often the hours following a run, long walk, anything involving jumping, and often after deadlifts or squats. The pain keeps me up during the night usually and can be exceptionally sharp the following day if I step funny or put pressure on the right leg. I notice the pain almost exclusively in my hip, but often get a burning or tightening sensation (almost like a very slight acute seizure) in the right half of my lower back and down my right leg to my knee. There are a few things I've found that helps a LOT!!!
1) make sure the shoes you are wearing are good for you. I work in a bank and noticed a massive difference when I invested a little more money into my heels. I wear 2.5" heels usually and switched to Madden Girls pumps (from DSW, a cheaper but effective solution) and noticed a great difference from the support on my arch. I also bought lighter and much more supportive running shoes.
2) It's an imflammation problem, NSAIDS do help but don't rely on them fully.
3) Sleeping with the pained leg/hip hugged to my chest. It relieves a lot of tension and I'm very flexible so it also helps stretch the band and makes it easier to move the next day.
4) Yoga streches help a LOT. These onces help signifigantly if done on a regular basis, a few times a week to help stretch the IT band and make it more flexible
5) I wasn't always super fit, I've noticed less and less issues and I've lost weight and increased flexibility.
6) Flexability helps A LOT. I used to have issues with squats because it caused so much knee and hip pain (yes my form was correct, but my IT bands tried to kill me). I do squats regularly (t least once a week) and have done from no weight to 300lbs machine assited squats and go WELL below parallel showing how much more flexible I;ve gotten. I do still get pain, but it is nowhere near what it used to be and i'm doing SO much more
Finally, simply remember there is no instant fix to the problem. It takes work and time. It's been about 2 years and I feel better than ever and even on my worst days now painwise, they don't compare to what I used to consider being a 'light' pain workout day before. Good luck everyone!

Two things made a difference for me. Take Magnesium everyday400mg at least, and stay away from night shade vegetables ( potatoes, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes ) they have a natural toxin called Solanine.

Pain in the hip could be your IT Band or your Hip flexor. For either of these, you definitely need to rest it and avoid things like running, jumping or cycling. Putting a cold compress on it will help get down any inflammation and will also help with the pain. After a good 2-3 days of cold therapy, I recommend focusing on any treatment that with stimulate blood flow (ie. massage therapy, BFST, acupuncture, ultrasound, etc). Promoting blood flow to the area helps repair the damaged tissue and will accelerate the healing.

My pain is very similar. Mine is constant with the pain in my right groin also, especially when I pull my leg up to put on my right shoe. Terrible! This problem started years ago with L4 and L5 vertibrat. but MRI show nothing significant? I am 66 now and the problem has gradually turned into a bad limp. No sleep, no more horse back riding, pickel ball, or swing dancing. My doctor finally gave a steroid. 20MG of Prednisone for only 5 days. Almost immideantly I felt like a teenager again. Pain was gone and my mind was clear. She told me this is a dangerous drug and could not renew it. As soon as I was done all the pain came back. Ibupropehn, Alieve, even Hydrocodone help very little. Chropractor used to help but not any more. I did get relieve recently after having cardiack rehab from my 10th. stint on different peddle machines . After 10 min. the pain would get to be less. It would start at a 7 and be down to a 3 after my 35 min work out. But it would only last for a few hours. I am starting physical rehap this week to strengthen musles. I got to get some relief. Let me know if you have any luck. Yes - I know I am the worlds worst speller. Thanks. Gunner

Cold will help with your pain much better than Alieve or ibuprofen...and it's natural :)
