Years back I got into running and decided to do the London Marathon. I built up my stamina and eventually I was running 10 miles twice a week in around 1h 20m
I then joined a Gym and started using the running machines... I immediately damaged my knee. Ever since whenever I ran my knee would cause me massive discomfort but I decided to do the Marathon anyway (partly because of sponsorship) an agonising 7 hours later I made it home and I was limping for about 2 weeks afterwards.
Anyway... Its now had about 3 years rest so I figured its about time I started again :D I get the impressoin its now recovered but just to be sure I'm taking it easy and I'm staying the HELL AWAY from treadmills Also bought some new shoes.
So... I've picked out a nice easy 1.5 mile route round my house and 6 runs later I still find it incredibly hard, though I'm sure my times are improving.
Its a very hilly route unfortunately, but I figure it'll help build my strength up. I've also put on a shocking 2 stone since then, and I can really feel the strain of luggin around the extra weight. Plus I'm now clearly incredibly unfit.
I'm aiming for the New Forest marathon in September which should be plenty of time, with a half marathon in between.
I'm not really sure what my question is :| but I guess I'd like to know if you guys recommend continuing with a shorter, hilly route to build strength or if I should find a longer but flatter route to build up endurance.
Thanks
