Hello,

I was prescribed Remeron for mixed depressive - anxiety disorder some 6 months ago and Remeron did help with my anxiety, but it made my depression and self-awareness even worse because I gained way too much weight while on it. It’s hard not to, since Remeron made me constantly hungry and sleepy.

At my latest appointment with my psych, he suggested I might have more benefit if I switched to Effexor. I still have few weeks on Remeron, but reading online stories of Effexor withdrawal made me think is it worth switching Remeron to Effexor?

Hi,

Remeron definitely seems more likely to cause sleepiness - my doctor prescribed it to me mainly because one of my depression symptoms was severe insomnia. As far as insomnia goes, Remeron was very effective, it would knock me out in about an hour after taking it at night. But as a side effect, I gained 20 pounds of extra weight on it.

I wasn't too much for switching on Effexor too - it was mainly the stories of hard withdrawals that scared me, but I agreed to give it a try and I'm currently taking it for three months and not sure for how much longer - but it makes me feel normal and I'm not gaining any more weight. I guess everyone reacts differently to these medications, so it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the same side effects.
