I had my 1 Hammertoe strauightened on Thursday 31st of January Bone was broken and a metal pin put into my toe to keep it straight, No Plaster of Paris and NO Crutches the Hospital gave me a velcro slipper and I have been able to walk
I went back into the hospital 4 days later because the metal pin looked like that it was coming out, the Orthpedic surgeons in there just told me to wear No socks and they gave me a better, tougher sandal so on the 15th of March the metal pin is coming out and I can go running again, Nice 1

Adrian, I had the same procedure (bunion and hammertoe) but my cast was open in the front and was removed in 2 weeks and replaced with a velcro boot.  My metal pin came out in 6 weeks.  I quit wearing the boot at the 6 1/2 week mark and have had great results. I'm now 4 months out and doing really good, even jogging, no limits.  My foot is just a little stiff in the mornings but otherwise, doing well.  The first 10 days was the worst.

Hope you get along as good.

Micki

Laura - I had 3 surgeries to correct hammertoes on both feet as a result of a cortisone treatment that made a mess of my feet. Went to an advanced center in Baltimore Maryland and I continue having problems and my feet look terrible. Try and go to local docs for help and nobody will look at me and tells me to go back to the surgeon. What do do? When they fuse a toe, it no longer bends in the middle and at 52 - I wish I never let anybody touch my feet as there are no do-overs. The Doctor even amputated the head of a metatarsal because a bone didn't fuse and when I said something was wrong, nobody listened. It's been over a year now since the last surgery and the 1st was done in October 2010. Let me say this - before anybody touches your feet (no matter how good they are) and ask lots of questions and know what the plan is. Set expectations completely up front and be careful. Regarding the primary comment, even with pins - a cast on the front sounds very protective. All I can say is don't go into this blindly. There are some good outcomes, but it can go either way.

I can tell you I too would never ever have hammertoe surgery as its been 3 months+ since same surgery. Bunionectomy seems ok, but toes are another story. Instead of what was described to be as a "simple clipping of ligaments", the Dr apparently removed a pc of bone from each toe so now one foot is an entire shoe size shorter and due to swelling 2 sizes wider. When I complained (& pain hasn't been issue) stiffness & swelling and inability to stand long has been problem, of course Dr said I needed more surgery................Sorry Pal, it won't happen.

I am currently recovering from bunion and hammertoe surgery. My hammertoe was the toe that is next to the big toe. Since I had a bunion repair on the other foot I thought I knew what to expect. This is the most painful surgery I have ever had and I attribute it to the hammertoe not the bunion repair. The pin creates a lot of swelling and that is why it is extremely important to elevate your foot above the heart. Take your pain medications religiously. I set an alarm during the night to take the next dose. My pin in still in place and is supposed to come out at 6 weeks. I only have the walking shoe, no cast, but the cast on the front half of the foot sounds like a good idea to prevent weight bearing on the forefoot which is extremely important in the healing of the hammertoe repair. It is difficult to walk with only your heel touching the ground so the cast sounds like a good idea. I am hoping that all this was worth it. Good luck to you in your recovery.

Hello
I had 2 bunions and 6 hammer toes done 5 1/2 weeks ago. I wore surgical shoes that took 2/3 weight on back of my foot until a few days ago when I had the K wires removed from the 6 toes. I have had virtualy no pain but now I am out of the surgical shoes and wearing crocs my feet get sore if I am on them too much. I find I need to stop and elevate when I feel they are too sore. I wore the surgical shoe initially with crutches but after a few days I didn't need to at home. When I went out I would take a walking stick. It is a big operation in terms of recovery. I was told 3-6 months for full recovery. I am in Sydney Australia.

I had bunion surgery and hammetoe surgery on my right foot in Nov 2013.  I had a severe bunion and the doctor shortened my 2nd toe that was becoming a hammertoe. It was a rough firtst 2 months! A splint the first week, a cast for 3 weeks and an air cast boot for another 5 weeks. I did not walk at all for over 2 months. I have come a long way and already I can barely see the scars. My 2nd toe is still kind of stiff, but that may be permanent. my foot looks good tho. I am now VERY glad I had the surgery because even tho I am still recovering (still alittle swelling, etc) I can walk without the pain I was constanly having BEFORE the surgery. You have to expect anywhere from 8 weeks  and up to recover.  It has now been almost 5 months and I am still recovering, but well on the right path! But for me, it has been worth it. Choose a good doctor!

Hi LA 1977--I had the same surgery that you had 7 weeks ago. My pins came out of the two toes two weeks ago (5 weeks post surgery) and this seems to be the norm. I experienced extreme fracture blisters that caused a bit of a problem, Things are not bad now, wearing a Croc on the surgery foot, and it feels pretty good. Just starting to put weight on the bunion area, but not a lot, still walking flat footed. Walking outside with the air cast on, and occasionally at night. Still experiencing swelling and very sensitive nerve, so I am supposed to gently massage with lotion a couple of times a day. I guess it goes on for awhile. It is my right foot, and desperately want to try driving. Doc. said I could go at my own pace, and don't see him again for 6 mos. I didn't have a plaster cast or surgical shoe on my foot. Just the air cast. This is the second foot to be done, same surgery and am glad I only have two feet!!! Good Luck.

Not sure where you live. I sure wouldn't do both at the same time unless you had help. I am at two mos tomorrow( right foot) and just started driving yesterday. I didn't have very much help . Have had a set back in that I bent my big toe back about an hour ago:(. It is swollen and uncomfortable. Will see how it goes from here. Good luck with yours.

Micki, can you please tell me what kind of PT were you advised to do to speed up your recovery? had same procedures done on both feet ( hammer toe (4th) and bunion on my left, and hammer toe 4th & 5th on my right), 12 weeks post op today.Started spinning at 11 weeks, and back to the gym, but no running yet, as my big toe joint still stiff and pain if i put to much pressure ( like walking in tip toes sort of thing ) :(

Thank you and waiting for your reply.

I just had a tailors bunion and hammer toe surgery on my second toe 4 weeks ago. The hammertoe surgery was more to correct my toe curving to the right, not down like a hammer toe. Like you, the bunion seems to be healing fine but still have a bluefish red color on the second toe and am worried the toe won't straighten as much as I was told. I have been taping it to my big toe to help keep it straight but will that even help? I feel like I am not getting definitive answers from my doc. Btw, the hammer toe surgery was done by shaving two metacarpals and putting an insert inbetween the bottom two. How is your toe doing now? Are you happy with the results and scars? I'm supposed to have my left foot done next week and pretty nervous about it. Any comments or reassurance you can provide would be appreciated! Thank you!

I had bunion and hammertoe surgery for a very deformed foot. Orthopedic said is it was one of the worst he had seen. I waited way too long and it was a mess. I had it Dec 1 and lay with foot up for one full week and went back to work with a cast and a scooter. I am at 30 day mark and got cast off and boot on but still may not walk for 2 more weeks then I will give it a try. I had a VERY pleasant experience. First smart move..... I went to an Ortho doc at Andrews clinic in Gulf Breeze Florida. I had a pain block and never even used a pain pill, only using advil and Aleve. I am so grateful.
Another thing I did was I decided before had that I would be thankful, enjoy the experience, never complain and be grateful for all of it. It worked and I am on the other side and will get the other one done next year.

Meant to also say that I followed the doc orders to a T and read meditation and prayer books and believed that I would heal beautifully and that has been the case. Please do not believe and take into your spirit all the horror stories you see about this stuff out there.
