My brother had a head trauma recently. He didn’t lose the consciousness and he had only mild headache after, so he decided not to see a doctor. But after a while he started to have dizziness and nausea. So, finally he went to see a doctor and they did the scan of the skul. They told him that there is subdural hematoma. I was wonder what is treatment for subdural hematomas. Is he going to have long term consequences? Is he going to need surgery?

My wife is a nurse, so I asked her. She said that if it is small subdural hematomas it may be treated with observation and a series of scans to ensure that the blood is reabsorbing and not becoming calcified. If it is severe case, surgical intervention is necessary. After surgical removal of a subdural hematoma, a patient will most likely need to remain in the intensive care unit for a period of time. The complications associated with surgery are swelling of the brain, infection, seizures, memory loss, headache, difficulty concentrating, and chronic SDH. The prognosis for someone who has suffered a subdural hematoma depends on the size and severity of the blood clot.
