i had to quit smoking because of intense pains thru out the sides of my lungs. i was a smoker for 17 years.

after i quit, the first 2 months, i would have major pain in the center of my chest. some days it felt like 80 pounds weight on my chest.

slow cardiovascular workouts and hot showers, i started to cough up phelm with grey specs in it i finally coughed up some black stuff. it was black like oil, like i spit out some black oil. and

i feel much better now, no more chest pains. except when i push myself to hard in a workout. you have to know your body's limits. i don't cough up anymore stuff either. its been 5 months after i quit.

I have a number of concerns. I quit cigs over 2 months ago and quit pot 12 days ago. I'm having the same type of probs you all are having. In the left side of my chest i feel a burn feels like its in my heart or lung but i also feel it in my shoulder blade area sometimes. I also have a wisdom tooth on the top left thats black and chipping doesnt really hurt but throbs some. I also had a car wreck years ago that chipped some bones in my neck. I keep a constant crik in my neck sometimes it combines with mt tooth to give me a very bad headache that can last for days. I have fears that the tooth is infecting my heart but now that ive read these posts im leaning towards not smoking as the prob. I smoked cigs a pack a day and at least a quarter bag of pot a week for 20 years then i just dropped both of them cold turkey. I hope these chest pains are just part of the recovery process or withdraw symptoms. good luck to all this is no easy road to travel.

I quit cold turkey 90 days ago.... smoked 25 a day for 32 years.... have all the awful symptoms mentioned here hence now looking up if it is from stopping or something else..... knowing how long it lasts would be really useful as it is sometimes painful but always distracting....

Thank you for all the information posted. I quit 2 weeks ago and have experienced a strange tightness in my left side. Under my arm pit about 4-5 inches down. It comes and goes. I understand that quitting takes a huge toll on your body however was getting worried about what it could actually be. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

After reading all your responses my mind is at ease a little. I guess it can only improve from here on. Another symptom I am getting at the moment is a shortness of breath at times. This however comes and goes. On the positive side I can breathe a lot better and when I take a deep breath I feel like air is reaching parts of my lungs that haven’t been working all that well in the recent past.

Thank you for all your contributions.

Good luck to all.

I am experiencing the same symptoms, including dizziness. I guess my main ones are the chest pain that comes and goes and lack of concentration. The muscles on my back are really sore too. I wake up at least 4 times every night for no particular reason. I quit 2 weeks ago and yesterday dragged myself to the gym to see if after the workout it would be easier to breathe. I really hope this will go away soon. Thank you all for sharing your experiences because before I read these posts I seriously thought I was dying or something.

Welll I guess im not as scared now that I know Im not alone. Im 20, female, and started cutting down huuuge on cigarettes about a week ago. Now I have been cold turkey for 2 days and for the duration of the past 2 i have been experiencing very unnerving chest pains. I had been smoking ciggarettes heavily for almost 3 years as well as pot, which i am yet to quit but have cut my consumption into a quarter of what it was. I went to the hospital got an echocardiogram, blood tests and had my lungs checked and everything appears to be normal. If this is a common occurance after quitting smoking why wouldnt the doctor have told me that to ease my mind a little. Im sitting here thinking im dying from trying to make myself healthier! Its an uncomfortable, fairly constant tightness/heaviness right in the middle of my chest. Not a sharp pain but extreemely irritating and scary because it feels like it could very well be my heart.

Hi,

I ve been looking for an answer to this pain which is bothering more of my psychology than it's actually doing to my centre chest. Yes, i ve quit smoking about a month back and now have been getting this pain for about some while now, it subsides at times but when it's rainy, it really makes me think. It's not extremely painful at all. To me it's more like HIDE n SEEK, with slight inconveniences when it showed. But the real problem here is that I am fearing if it is lung cancer, because if it is then I have no clue how to tell my parents about it.  They ' ll flog me to death before i am actually diagnosed with it. BTW i smoked for more than 8 years, and around 10 sticks a day on average.

Hi, I am 20 years old and I've quit smoking 16 days ago. I contacted my physician because of comming and going pain in my lungs. She said it's perfectly normal and not to worry about it too much. It should go away after a month or something after you stop smoking. You also need to spit everything that comes from your lungs to your throat in order for your lungs to heal faster. This info I am posting is all legit, it was told to me by a doctor, so I am not just rewriting posts from other forums. She also said that every symptom you have during nicotine withdrawal is somehow related to it and when people stop smoking they get worried for every little thing they feel. After all, be happy that you have stopped smoking and have done your body a huge favour. Cecasition leads to better quality of life which I still haven't felt but anyway it's a good thing we are trying to do :D

Another one for the list! I have had this horrible chest pain as soon as I cut down on smoking. A really cool tip that has helped me alot is flavoured water. Cut up a lemon and a lime, blop 1 slice of each in a water bottle and give it a shake. That combined with English Mints, the little hard, round candy has curved my craving. Remember that smoking and caffine go hand in hand. Cut down on both at the same time and it will be easier, at least it was for me!
