same problem here. sounds identical to most of what i have read from these posts. after a couple years of visits to a urologist they have decided i have pfd. (Pelvic Floor Disfunction) its not fun, it sucks actualy. look it up, im sure youll find the same symptoms. i am curently experimenting with "kegel exercises" that are suppose to help though its only been 2 days now there has been no noticable progress. also trying some stretch techniques for the pelvic floor. basically pelvic floor is just as it sounds, the floor of your pelvic region. the mucles are either to tense or to relaxed. im not sure which yet for me. also along the way we found that a presciption for bph or enlarged prostate has kept out the pain and increased flow for a couple years now but its starting to not work anymore. UROXATROL is the name of the meds and is the only way i have kept my sanity.... or my job for that matter, i cant just walk away at work and go to the bathroom every ten minutes!!!! any way. i strongly recomend anyone with these symptoms to research "PELVIC FLOOR DISFUNCTION" I know the feeling is hell. my doctor originally thought it was enlarged prostate but i was only.... 25 at that time... a little too young for that... LOOK IT UP. HELP YOUR SELF. THE DOCTORS WILL JUST SUCK YOU DRY ON CO-PAYS.
good luck.

I am a physician who has this problem and currently undergoing treatment. Your physicians are correct. Your treatment is likely not.
This problem arises from a hypertonic pelvic floor or essentially spasm of the muscles making up the pelvic floor. This results in pelvic floor dysfunction which can affect urinary , anal , and ejaculatory function and cause significant pain and discomfort. Other names this condition goes by includes chronic abacterial prostatitis, though there is nothing wrong with your prostate, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome. This can come about from chronic pelvic tension( some people tense their neck or back muscles, others their pelvis and sphincters), chronic sitting, exercise, weightlifting in particular, compulsive masturbation, etc.
The treatment is physical therapy, relaxation therapy. Do not do kegels, this will only aggravate your condition. You must learn to relax your pelvic musculature.
The main therapy is internal physical therapy, I'm sorry to say. This is done through the rectum. A specialized pelvic floor therapist, gloves and lubes up, goes in and first deactivates myofascial trigger points in the pelvic floor musculature, levator ani, coccygeus, etc. Once these are deactivated and your pain is under control they then attempt to restore stretch to these muscles. Once these muscles restretch your function will improve. These however, may take months. A signficant other can be taught to perform this function under guidance. Other therapies include relaxation treatments, learning to destress, as well as external massage of the abdominal thigh and back muscles.
From a medication standpoint, the only alpha blocker that has been shown to help is rapaflo at 4mg. Muscle relaxants, such as flexaril and valium may also be of assistance. You need to look around in your town for pelvic floor physical therapists. Their main clients our women. I also highly recommend the book A Headache in The Pelvis by Anderson and Wise out of California. This condition can be managed but you will require a complete muscular overall.
I have been under treatment now for about 4-5 months.
Good Luck to you and all the others with this condition. Unfortunately, most urologists are clueless about this condition and your general docs are lost about this. There are a lot of us out here.

I've had these symptoms for the past 6 years. I'm 38 male. At first the discomfort was horrible, now I guess I'm used to it so it is bearable. I went to the urologist and was tested for UTI, Prostate enlargement had xrays, ultrasounds and an MRI done on the pelvic/bladder area, ton of antibiotics in case of prostate infection. The doctor only found prostate calcifications, which he said don't bring those symptoms.
Something he suspected was some kind of cystitis. He recommended to do a cystoscopy (yes, putting a camera up you weeny hole up to the bladder). Didn't do it just because the Insurance Co. didn't want to pay for it.
So living with the condition. It comes and goes. Sometimes I feel like peeing and just a little comes out like there is blockage.. and sometimes may be normal stream and don't feel so much urgency.
In all that time I haven't been able to decipher the cycle, what triggers it or not. On the look out to find more clues on this.

I have a son in college that also has this problem; it occurs about once a week. I had him start taking cranberry pills; at least 4000 MG a day. The cranberry pills have helped the situation. If you need to take one during the day, usually within 20 minutes of taking the pills his symptoms are gone. If you don't have the pills with you, buy a bottle of cranberry juice and down it. Don't buy the cranapple and other mixed flavors, you'll need the straight cranberry juice.

I have had most of the symptoms listed above and have been to the doctors about it over 10 times (I am female)- No UtI, No Bladder infection, etc... I am also a medical student and see patients my age (27) coming in with the same symptoms- mainly the urgency to urinate with no subsequent relief. After taking every kind of home remedy, antibiotic, and altering my diet I found a cure that has given me back my life in some respect. It is simply a cranberry supplement you can buy at any drug store. This brand works the best- Nature's Bounty- Triple Strength cranberry fruit concentrate- 25,200 mg (I know it's a high dosage). Take two soft gels a day with food and see how this treatment works for you. This will NOT be a cure for everyone so if symptoms persist or increase in severity please see your doctor. Almost all of the patients I have recommended this to have seen drastic improvements. I truly hope this helps, I know how terrible this can be!
