I had sporadic bed wetting up until age 8. At one sleepover after having an accident, my best friend's mother put me in a diaper and plastic underpants for the second night. It wasn't as punishment but to help me stay dry and it worked. A few days later and another slight accident in my own bed and my mom & I talked about it and I sheepishly admitted to her when she asked me about wearing protection at my friend's house that it did help me sleep better. She bought the necessary items that day for me. Up until age 11 I had a plastic mattress cover on my bed and cloth diapers & plastic underpants to wear to bed. There was never a big deal made about it and I actually felt better about myself and did well in school. I had a few more sleepovers at my friend's house and though he probably knew I wore diapers and plastic underpants beneath my pajamas (it was a bit noticeable) he never teased me about it (but did ask once if I still had accidents at night). Around 11 I had less wet diapers and eventually was able to wear training underwear through age 13. By 15 I had very few accidents at night.
My main point is try whatever you and your son wish to try and be supportive. It worked great for me.

Does your daughter have problems with accidents during the day as well?
You could try her with pull ups to see how good they work for her and if they work ok she could use them at the confirmation and when she is a flower girl.
The pull ups will make it easy for her to still use the washroom when she has to and if she does have an accident they will absorb the wetting.
It would help her a great deal to be part of the decision to wear a diaper at her confirmation she would know it is for the best that she does wear it but being a teenager being part of the decision will really help her be completely comfortable with wearing a diaper during the day.
Its a medical condition and a problem she can't help and giving her the chance to give her input into wearing the diaper during the day and why it is best that she does will really benefit her asking her how she would feel about trying pull ups would be worth considering.

Our daughter is 16 and has been a bedwetter since just past turning 15.She wears the cloth pin on diapers with adult size rubberpants over them that i buy for her from Babypants.com.I dont mind washing the diapers and rubberpants and they keep her bed dry plus we are not putting disposables in the land fill.It is ironic that even tho she has her rubberpants in pink, yello, and blue and babyprints, she likes wearing the babyprint ones the best!

Another thing that worries me is I ask if he is dry in the morning and he had a dry night which is quite rare but then after breakfast he got in the shower and I found his diaper was wet and warm. He must have peed himself while we were having breakfast.

Bed wetting is a very frustrating and difficult problem to overcome and he probably feels really insecure that at 12 he still wets the bed.
It is difficult for kids to get the diaper on properly by themselves and with the pull-ups leaking not much can be done.
If it gets to the point he insists on putting it on himself maybe plastic pants over the diaper will help if it leaks but they are really warm.
Support and reassurance that it is not his fault that he wets the bed means a lot many associate bed wetting with just being a problem for younger kids but it is a medical issue that he can't help.
If he doean't have accidents during the and if he wet his diaper rather than getting up to pee at breakfast he needs to know that the only time he wets in the diaper is when he can't help it.
Might work better for him if his routine was changed to going to the bathroom to pee and take off his diaper as soon as he wakes up.
Hopefully in time he grows out of it on his own.
