Ok, so today is Wednesday, and it's been exactly 7 days since my operation to remove my tonsils. The first few days were awesome! I stayed in the hospital over night, was doped up on morphine an slept heaps. The only problem I had was the uncontrollable urge to itch my entire body, a side affect of morphine I think. Then I went home the next morning and pottered around the house. I'm pretty sure I even ate half a thin based pizza. The following day was also fine, I was able to go into town an do the things I needed to do, check in with my school an tell them I would return on Monday.... And then Friday came around....... I have only felt worse an worse since then. My throat is so swollen, I can't breath properly, I can't speak and I'm so hungry but I can't even swallow my own saliva without it hurting. It's gotten so bad to the point where I went back to the drs this morning and my throat is infected since the surgery. I haven't slept properly since Wednesday last week, and I wake up panicked and in cold sweats. I have been eating whole grain toast because it's apparently good to eat scratchy food to help with the scabbing or something. It just feels good. Much better than ice blocks, I'm so sick of those. My breathe is foul an I have no taste what so ever. My tongue doesn't fit in my mouth, and I have melted about 5 ice packs today keeping them on my throat to ease the pain. The white gross stuff at the back of my throat is not as visible anymore, and there is still a couple of dark spots there. I have been given antibiotics for the infection, and I'm taking painkillers every 3-4hrs where possible. No one told me I was in for this much pain, had I known about it I would have been more prepared. The hospital said I would be fine in a week. This is horrible. And by the sounds of things I've still got a bit more suffering to do. I'm trying to force down the water to keep my throat moist, and trying to sleep when I can make myself. I am a 26y/I female. I think if your going to have this surgery done, make sure your prepared for the recovery! Stock up on chicken soup, make sure someone is going to be around for the first week incase anything goes wrong. And keep drinking that water. I know it hurts but it hurts even more when your throat dries out. It's like swallowing glass. Be brave! And make sure you ask for the good painkillers, and make sure you follow up with your dr after A week. No doubt your pain relief will run out by then anyway.
