I also have been diagnosed with reactive arthritis following salmonella poisoning. For weeks now I've had similar problems with my throat and my doctor just has me taking Advil. You should ask your doctor about reactive arthritis, especially if you've had any bacterial infection(food poisoning or std's especially).

I cannot believe all of your stories!

I am a 19 year old girl from England and I have been having my tongue and soft tissues from my body (eyelids, earlobes, breasts) swelling randomly for about a year now! I have been to see a specialist in Preston and he seems to think it is something called "chronic idiopathic urticaria and angiodema" i'm not sure if this relates to anyone or can try and help anyone in any way but I thought I should share my story anyway. I am also not sure if this is actually what is wrong with me as I have also suffered from hives.

Not only is it embarrassing and worrying it is also getting in the way of certain parts of my life. I have recently been sent home from a job in America as people seem to panic. Even though I know that my throat will not close, people do not realise it will go away in a matter of hours. I also sing for a living and I would be rather embarrassed if my tongue swells when I am on stage.

So please help people! If anyone else has this or anyone knows anyhting about it please let me know!

I am 60 years old and have been waking up with swollen lips and/or swollen tongue. Last night it was the swollen tongue. Very, very swollen. The flesh under my tongue, ie the bottom of my mouth, was also swollen. This is frightening as it feels like it could go down my throat and stop my breathing. I am going to the doctor and the dentist this week to have it checked out. I have never had food allergies but this is scarry. My lip will blow up to about 3 or 4 times normal size and my tongue gets so big that my speech is impaired. I am now more frightened over all the other similar posts where people don't know what is causing the problem.

Hi Everyone,

I am 36 years old and male, and for the last 1 year I have had 5-6 occassions when my tongue just swells up during the night. I wake up and one side of my tongue has a rash on it or sometimes is dark like something/someone has bitten it or I've been injected. It stops me from speaking properly and I give presentations for a living. This morning it happenned again, and now 3-4 hours later it is starting to go normal again. I noticed my son has this 3 months ago and his entire face was swollen for 6 hours!

Before I thought it was only happenning when I had some red wine, as this was the only consistent thing I did everytime it happenned but last night I had no wine! I had Noodles for dinner but last time it happenned I something else to eat.

An earlier comment mentioned dustmites - I am wondering whether this is true. It does feel like I have been bitten. Could it be dustmites or a small spider? Could it be me biting myself whilst sleeping in an awkard position? When was the last time we all changed our mattresses and or had them cleaned properly?

I am sure we will all find out soon.

Thanks for all your comments - it all helps.

I also have the swelling and tingling in my foot and hands sometimes even back, I sit alot for work and havent had a good workout in a minute so i figured that was poor circulation....

Wow, it was amazing to actually read your post. My mother is going through the exact same thing and is in the emergency room as we I type receiving medical treatment via IV because her tongue has swollen up. She too sensed the swelling coming on and was able to drive herself to the hospital; I was unable to saying 8 hours away. So far, it started with her tongue swelling on the left side then it was her lip then it was her right hand which also was accompanied with a bright red rash on her left and right forearm that they diagnosed as being cellulitus, next it was her lower arms, then it was her left middle finger but only the tip then it was her lip again. now it is her tongue. In a few of the instances, we thought it could have been from the needle in the hospital. Each time she had an IV or they took blood from her there was swelling. The cellulitus diagnosis came right on the verge of her just having an IV treatment in th emergency room. On the day she got the cellulitus diagnosis they took blood from her and the lower arms and the middle finger only the tip swoll. In reviewing the medication she was on we found that the one of the attending doctors has prescribed her a generic version of a medication she was allergic to. One would think that after she was taken off this medication and several weeks had passed this would go away but it has not. We are also stumped. After several days of going back and forth with the doctor they agreed to send her to an allergist. They already known she is allergic to prarie type grasses and she is prone to sinus and hayfever. Realizing this time the year is known for pollen and other types of element which would cause sinus and hayfever to act up we are looking at something along this line to be the trigger.

As an RN, please be sure you do NOT leave your medications on your tongue and leave them there long... where they will start to dissolve. This does contribute to tongue swelling etc and we have seen it often. Take your meds immediately and swallow them and drink water afterwards. Make sure you see BOTH a dentist for regular good deep dental cleanings and your physician for work-ups as to allergic reactions, hypothyroidism, reactive arthritis etc.

I have this exact condition. Basically, it's angioedema. Mine occurs with chronic recurring idiopathic urticaria and it's very scary. I have to take 3 zyrtec a day to keep my body under control, and of course be mindful of any triggers. I know that I am sensitive to cold and pressure which make me flair up, however there is not a cause that can be pinpointed for the swollen throat. We have attributed it to being overly stressed when it has happened because that's the only thing we can ever think of. I've had the same thing happen to me at night.. waking up with a tickle then BAM I can barely breathe. It takes a good day to slowly go down. I have an epipen for emergencies but I'm scared to use it. When I go to urgent care for it, they give me their own shot of epinephrine and an IV of steroids to calm it down. I'm sorry you have to deal with. I'm sorry all of us do.

My symptoms are somewhat like these ones. But one morning i woke up and just a section of my tongue was swollen so i took some medicin and it went down. but then about 48 hours later at 2 in the morning i realized my throat was really sore. when i went to go tell my parents i realized it was getting worse and by the time i reached them i could no longer breath so my parents called 9-1-1. After awhile my throat opened up a bit, but the doctors could not figure out what was wrong. so they sent me home with an epi-pen and long behold it happened again and they still dont know what is wrong. Does anyone have any explanations that may explain this?
(sorry about the spelling mistakes)

ASPARTAME AND MSG!!! I have been swelling up for YEARS!!! Then I started having anxiety issues and lastly the left side of my face went NUMB! I went to the doctor all along and they said pretty much the same thing to me as Echo. Sometimes they would give me antihistimines that would not always work and other times they wanted to prescribe antideppressants which I would not take. Then when my face went numb, the doctor sent me for an MRI and thought I might have MS. Then my husband told me about a friends brother who supposedly had MS and it was from Aspartame. I quit all aspartame (which is hard since it is in over 5000 food!). It STOPPED!!!

Google Dr. Blaylock for more details. MSG also causes the same reaction. They are neurotoxins and they burn holes in the myelin sheath. I also had an aneurism which has miraculously healed now! Read your labels and STAY AWAY FROM ASPARTAME!!! And all the other neurotoxins like MSG. Any of the pink, blue or yellow sweetners are bad for you. Stevia is the only natural sweetner out there. Use honey instead and you will actually loose weight.

Believe me, it is the junk they put in our foods!!!!!

I'm replying to all of the posts on Acute Angioedema. This happened to me (tongue, lip and jaw swelling, welts on stomach, large welts on arm after blood work in the lab. Also, I've had all the tests and they are all negative. Working with my Internist and Allergist to no avail. It's ideopathic (mysterious cause) they tell me. First this happened 20 years ago on and off for over a year. Condition disappeared until 3 years ago --- and now the swelling occurs once a week. Trips to the ER about 3 times within the last year.
At one time I was told Lisinoprol (blood pressure) medicine was the cause. Right now I'm on Atenolol and Cozaar but they don't seem to trigger the attacks.

I control them to a certain extent with Benedryl and as a last resort, Prednisone.

Somebody out there must have an answer!!! Can't believe that more research has not been done with this problem.

[I had severe swelling of my lips.(elephant woman)
ended up in ER 3 times the tongue started swelling nobody knew why until I was in ER one time and an australian doctor was on duty and he immediately said it was angiodema.
I just took steroids and antihistinine. and carried an epi pen.
A year later I had a large lump appear in my throat. The ER surgeon said he would remove it but as it was attached to the thyroid I would lose half of it.
I am on thyroxine but I have not had the swellin since the thyroid medication kicked in.

I too have this strange disease. It always happens to me when I have anxiety attacks or get stressed about situations. I have noticed too it will happen to me when I have too much caffeine. Like if I drink too much coffee or energy drinks if I am not active after consuming I will start tingling, itching and then swelling. I have been living with this for over 20 years. I have just tried to manage it. I really feel it is a nervous system disorder.

Thanks for all the responses I am glad I am not the only one.
