Hi there, my name is Stephanie, and I experience my tongue swellingup at 3: 30 or 4:00 in the morning also. The first time it happened to me, my whole tongue swelled up and I was still able to breathe, and swallow with some difficulty. I went to the Hospital and the gave me a shot of steroids and Epipen and had me on a Benadryl drip and they also took some tests, and everything came back fine. So they reffered me to an Allergist and everything was o.k. So I am also stumped on why my tongue swells up. I find too that sometimes a week before my period starts, my tongue swells up when I am sleeping., and now it is only half of my tongue, so I take Benadryl and it goes down with in a couple of hours. I agree it is very scary!!!

Have you had a Thyroid test to rule out anything, a swollen tongue is one of the symptoms, so is low Iron, that is another one. So that is my story, glad to hear that I am not the only one out there, with having my tongue swell up.

From experience taking anti depressant or really any pill taken for long periods of time. Your body develops an allergy to it. It only gets worse. The best thing is to get off all substance for period of time. Be your ur lab rat. If you r body parts don't swell any more than you know it was one or all. Slowly introduce one at a time back..... When the swelling comes back....you then no what not to take. IM 34 years old... Was not allergic to ANYTHING , And now taking even, the simplest things my tongue swells

Has anybody thought to check out their teeth and their roots for infections ... This can cause one side of the throat and glands to swell.  Possibly an allergic reaction to certain tooth fillings or dental products ... ??  Nobody has mentioned this and it is the first thing I thought of ...

I have had similar issue. Seems to correlate to the use of Windex with ammonia. I stopped using it and so did the swelling. I used it last night and woke to a swollen tongue, missed work too. Anyway I am going to stop using it again and wait a month and test it. Take a look at your household cleaned!!! Cheers.

HI there, I have experienced my tongue swelling up around 4:00 or 4:30 for no reason too. I had to go to the Hospital where they gave my a shot of EPI and Benadryl and Steroids, and also have been to an Allergist! They don't know what it is, it could be allergies of some sort, but it is not too food, and I haven't changed anything either. I figured out it only seems to happen a week before I start my period. So I am thinking it could be Hormonal. Have not been to a Doctor to discuss it, but it has been constant like this for a year. Not only does my tongue swell up, sometimes it is my top lip, or bottom lip or a bit of my cheek, but it is never together. It is very frustrating!!! In order to releive the swelling I take Benadryl and it does go away. The doctor did say to me if it occurs again, and Benadryl works, she said to treat it. Anyways, I am hoping it will slowly stop. Good luck with yours. :)

I'm a heavyset 21 year old male. In the past couple of days, I've been having some of these symptoms. I've never had them before either. The back of my throat and tongue feel slightly swelled, but they do not inhibit my eating or drinking habits and I feel no pain. Around this time of year I usually have a bout of strep, but this doesn't feel like it at all. If it helps, I have about 300 different (identifiable) foods I'm slightly allergic to and probably more I don't know about. So far, it's only been a minor annoyance though, so I'm relieved it's not as bad as some y'all's horror stories.

Interesting. I have many of the same symptoms as other described and had a MAJOR esopogial flare up yesterday that hospitalized me not long after having a sugar free Red Bull which contains aspartame. I will look for this. Also, read a previous post and saw the term angiodema and looked it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angioedema . Seems spot on.

I get the same thing! It always happens around 0400-0430 in the morning. The first time it happened I was in a panic because I didn't know if my throat was going to completely close. Very frightening. It happens like you, I wake up with a funny/tickling feeling in my throat and then within minutes it starts to swell up! It used to happen maybe 2-3 times a year. Now it is happening more often. I went to my doctor, who referred me to an allergy doctor. He did all the tests and has no idea why it's happening. Why can't doctors figure it out?? It is very frustrating, and I totally understand the fear of going to bed wondering if it's going to happen again. Let me know if your doctor ever figures it out, and I will do the same.

Oh yeah, one more thing: it never happens during the day. Only in the middle of the night?

i have similar symptoms at random. It usually starts with an itchy ear, swollen pallet, sometimes swollen throat and this time under the tongue - its usually only on the right side of my mouth. Have seen an allergy specialist who after initial tests indicated that its a build up of salicylates in the body. This does make sense as I was drinking large quantities of peppermint tea and of course the various fruits and foods that have a high content. (Salicylates are a natural form of aspirin found in foods such as tomatoes, peppers, apricots, jams, certain fruits e.g. oranges, grapes, berrys; fruit juices etc). As long as I stay away from these foods then I don't get issues. Would strongly recommend anyone having similar problem to visit the Oxford Allergy Clinic - they have other clinics in the UK for testing.
