Thanks everyone for your posts. I've just returned from the ER. Mine was diagnosed as ACE inhibitor angioderma. I've been on Lisinipril (sp) for a couple of years, the ER doc said there is a 1% chance of this occuring - but they've seen it many times. Mine was just my tongue and tongue root, not in the throat. Couldn't keep my tongue in my mouth, my double chin became one huge chin, and my speech was greatly affected. Went to the local clinic where they gave me an epi shot, IV cortizone, and an IV epi after they called the ambulance. I feel like I've been through a wringer, but I refused a hospital stay for observation. ER gave me 2 doses of flash (?) frozen plasma and levaquin antibiotic by IV. No more ACE inhibitors for me!! This sight helped me decide to go to the clinic and helped me understand what the medical personnel were talking about.
Hi yes , I woke up with one side of my face swollen and numb , a few days later I woke up with one side of my tongue swollen so much that I could not swallow properly or talk properly , I went to the Doc who said it was a blocked saliva glands , had the tests but they could not find anything , so they said the saliva stone had removed itself .so all should be good but I woke up a few days later with the same problem on the opposite side of my tongue got sent to an ear nose and throat specialist ,. they called it a mystery , I thought it may have been an allergic reaction to a first time pill I took for High blood pressure , however I am still taking that pill , The Doc said it can't be the pill because the reaction would be ongoing , so I am back at square one ,, they don't know what caused it .. I have still woken up twice with very slight numbness in my top lip .. I have been ok for a few weeks now.. but I am like you ..I am afraid that one of these mornings I will wake up with my throat blocked .....
Hi Susan,
yes #I get it now and then , sometimes my lips and one side of face swell up, yesterday my tongue,.It always happens when my immune system is down and I am about to get ill,
The same thing happened to me, but they only kept me 6 hours in the ER (they were close to admitting me). It happened a year ago now and ever since, my health has steadily declined and no disorder/disease has been diagnosed except chronic inflammation and I have been through so many tests. I switched off the Lisinopril right after and have not had the tongue swelling issue, but now have new issues cropping up regularly, anywhere from vertigo to polyneuropathy and now severe bone pain and I can literally see how twisted my fingers have become in just the last few weeks. Please post an update on how your wife is doing as maybe we have similar issues and can help each other. Thanks!
I just had this exact thing happen. My left side of my throat swelled up to the left side of my tongue and impaired my speaking and swallowing. I think mine was related to perfume. I saw a post from over a year ago Relating this to perfume i rarely wear perfume, but had that day. Thank you for sharing! I do believe after years of wearing it, maybe it has become toxic, or additional stress in my life ( handicap child having surgery) those levels have been higher than normal. Blessings to the person who helped me, and anyone else who can be helped from my post!
ASPARTAME could well be my problem.I have been trying to avoid this additive even using kids toothpaste because it is in all the others I checked,I am using nicotine replacement lozenges having recently given up cigarettes,I used 2 in quick succession a few days ago, felt the back of the left side of my tongue tingling, got rid of the lozenge but my tongue swelled up massively and stayed that way for an hour or so,my first experience of this, I am 65 yrs old,I am also coeliac don't know if that lowers tolerance to man made sweeteners? no more aspartame for me please.
I woke up this morning with the left half of my tongue swollen to about 3 times the size of the right. Thought I may have bitten my tongue. I can swallow and talk, although I sound funny when I do say something. I've read a lot of these posts and most of them seem to happen during the night. I sleep with my mouth open and wonder if a bed bug (ugh) or a mite (double ugh) bit my tongue. I did eat a DQ chicken sandwich with fries for supper, which is a rare occurrence for me. Maybe the MSG?? Very strange. I'm not panicked after reading all of your posts. Thank you for taking the time to tell me about your experiences.
Mine started about 6 years ago. Partial tongue, throat, lip and face swelling. It would happen once in a while and as time has gone on it has happened more frequently. Now in the past month it has happened many times. I have taken an allergy pill before it happens and it will still happen. Last night I took Zyrtec and when I woke up this morning my left side of my upper lip and part of my cheek was swollen, but if I hadn't taken the pill it would have been the whole half of my face. I don't know what I'm allergic to, nothing adds up to anything

Just read about your dilemma. I was stung by a bee when I was twelve, thought I was okay, went to bed, and was awakened by my mother when she checked on me and saw that I looked like something out of National Geographic. As it turns out, I had to take a series of shots for two years for Angioneurotic Edema. I, too, would have random parts of my body swell randomly. Apparently, it was set off by the bee sting and was an ongoing reaction. My allergy to bees has gotten worse, so I have to carry an Epi-pen and get treated at the ER for each sting. Might want to check into it.
