hi,

I am 42 years old and just had my tonsillectomy 3 days ago. I am so glad i found this post. I have done
really well with pain and eating, but then the tongue started swelling ridiculously. I was afraid it was
a reaction to antibiotics, so thanks for letting me know its normal. good luck to everyone!

I'm 21 year old girl, and I just got my tonsils out a few days ago too. The 20th to be exact. Only on the 3rd day and I was getting optimistic that I was healing faster than expected because the doctor said the white furry (ew) scabs wouldn't show up until the 5th or 6th day, yea now all hope has gone down the drain..
I'm completely terrified of what has yet to come. I've been taking Hydrocodone for the pain, but it doesnt completely eliminate it at all. Only really makes me loops and drowsy enough to just fall asleep, which I guess is good.
Already having slight pain in my ears. Ah! I'm so nervous for the next 6 days! :-(

What my real question was, does anyone else have a huge coated tongue? I've been trying to scan all the posts, but there's so many of them and again, I'm a little loopy.. haha. It's been numb and swollen since day one. Tonight was the first night I was able to to even open my mouth big enough to stick a toothbrush in there to do a little scrub-a-dub on my teeth. I feel absolutely disgusting.

The inside of my lips are all jacked up too. I feel like just because I was asleep, they didn't give a rat's ass about ripping my mouth open. I guess I'm already miserable, anything to help with the lip and tongue pain.

I'm just going to have to ride it out eh?? But really, about that tongue, can someone tell me what's up??
? ? ? ?

Hi Guys ... I would just like to say thank you to all of you for writing about having your tonsils removed I dont feel so worried now. I had my tonsils removed 5 days ago and it has been absolute hell, my tongue is so swollen and has gone a funny jaggered shape, my ears hurt terribly and I can now not even swollow my own syliva without it making me want to cry. When I first had them removed I thought I was going to be fine as the pain was not so bad but as soon as day 3 struck I knew it was going to be a killer. I cant sleep at night as I know when I wake up in the morning the pain is going to be unbearable, water stings because it is so cold and food is becoming an absolute no go for me. Does anybody have any tips on what will not be so painful to eat and drink and any idea of anything I can take for the ear pain as this is getting worse. I really a, doubting whether getting these things out was worth it at all.

i had my tonsils taken out about 9 days ago. i felt fin when i got out of the OR but when i got home the pain was horrble. The back of my throat is all white and it hurts to open my mouth wide. i was on tylenol with codene but i had to stop bc it constipated me ... i didnt go to the abthroom for 4 days .. now im not on any pain medicine bc im only 16 and the doctors dont want me taking any strong narcotics .. my tongue had a little blister on the side and my ears are in so much pain its worse then my throat. i feel like im not getting better at all. i cant taste anything .everyting taste disgusting. i tried my favorite jolly ranchers today thinking i could finally eat that and when i put it in my mouth i spit it right out. when i first tried food i had my moms chicken cutlet parm. taking little bites and i thought she was just cooking horrible until i noticed the trend. now my tongue has white on it. this is honestly horrible the doctors should have warned us all about these things bc it makes u nervous finding out yourself. i hope i get my taste back bc i love food and i just dont have an appetite for anything anymore =(

I'm a single mom & 28 yr old female. I had mine out April 21, it will be 3 weeks this coming wednesday. I gained an yeast infection in my mouth that sunday. I been to my Dr twice since. I have been given 2 bottles of hydrocodone with count of 400 each and my last bottle of hydrone was half a dosage of count 200. They say everything is on schedule for me being good bill of helath. However my right side of my tongue, upper mouth area, lower cheek, and all that side up to my right ear hurts. I can't eat, except for certain soft foods. My Dr said it is the muscle connected to me having TMJ. I seriously doubt that is the case. I feel maybe the nerve area was tampered with during my surgery. Is there anything else I can do for this besides ice packs and ibuprofen? and how long is this going to last, cus I can't even talk long or be on the phone without hurting. I noticed I get kinda dizzy too wheb i stand to long, do too much, or do anything pretty much.

I am 34and I'm on day 6 of recovery and have never been so miserable in my life! After having 3 kids and 5 tattoos nothing comes near to how I can describe this pain! I woke up on day 5 and may as well been swallowing razor blades..today my ears n tongue are almost making it impossible for me to eat..why is my tongue burning so bad? Why wasn't this not ever even brought up during any ENT visits or after surgery? I am taking oxycodone every 4 hours and god forbid if I fall asleep and the 4hr time period has passed..I suggest setting some kind of alarm if you're going to sleep. To keep my throat moist at night I'm using a cool mist humidifier which seems to be doing the trick..just try to keep the door to your room shut for best results. The dr said i'll be feeling better after 2weeks but I've been reading so much about some people still in pain after a month? Help! I can't bear this pain any longer!

I'm a thirty year old female, who's :'( had my tonsils taken out three days ago and I'm suffering from not being able to drink the fluids. My tylenol w/codiene goes up my nose and burns as well as the water. I just want to sleep with my ice pack (for throat) and heating pad (for ears). My husband brought me ensure, apple juice, popcicles and bottle water. However, I can't drink any of it. I don't want to dehydrate or end up back in hospital. Somebody please help me. :'(

Ok so I had it done 12 days ago and the tip of my tongue along with the sides are hurting so bad that every time I eat or drink I can't stand it. Also, I am having extreme pain in my ears that I give up on eating. The only relief I have found for the ear pain is temporary but i put hot wash cloths against them for a few minutes. I am having a lot of drainage in the back of my throat to the point that I have to go and spit every few minutes and I have the taste in my mouth at all times. Two days after the surgery I ended up back in the ER with chest pain come to find out that I was dehydrated even though I was drinking all the fluids I could and it was so bad all my veins had collapsed so they could barely get an IV in me and the X-Ray showed that my entire left lung was covered with pneumonia. After talking to a Respiratory nurse she said for how fast I came down with the pneumonia considering I was not sick at all before surgery the only explanation is that I aspirated during surgery.

RECOVERY DAY 8. OPERATION TONSILLECTOMY+ADENOINECTOMY 9 days ago.

My first 4 days I thought were bad but little did I know it got worse and worse and worse!
Today is post op 8 and for the first time i have hope it will get better. Yesterday was so bad for me
with STINGING PAIN, it feels like its on the sides of my tongue or in the back of my throat i cant tell.
My tongue is so soar and white and swollon I hate it!!!! Well I was getting so sick of my pain medicine
i decided to stop taking it last night and switch to just tylenol, and shockingly today had been my best
day yet! the stinging is still there but not as bad, and i can cover it up with menthol hallz. I just cannot wait
to get this whole thing over with! WHEN WILL IT GET BETTER? it seems different for everyone!
My suggestions on food would be...
AppleSauce warmed soft bread w/ a drink
Pudding fried bologna (GROSS i know, but i saw some in my fridge and decided to try it suprizingly ezy to get down its so slimey)
Soups
Ramen Noodles overcooked

My advise would be
-If your pain medz. make you sick, its best to just switch to just tylenol.. as scary as it may sound to go off
the pain medz. it makes a HUGE difference!
-ice for your neck and something warm for your ears!
- Organic licorish Throat Coat Tea, and menthol hallz- I CANT STRESS THIS TEA ENOUGH IT REALLY REALLY HELPS

At this point I feel like you just have to keep pushing thre threw the pain and eventually it will get better

ON A POSSITIVE NOTE: We all know that 5yrs from now we wont even recall how painfull this recovery is!
THERES SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TOO lol :] keep your heads up i know i'm trying + good luck!

I'm a 46 yo male who is 1 week post surgery. My throat pain was much less severe than I expected early on, but peaked on day 6. I've been just using extra strength Tylenol, but have the Percocet waiting just in case. Humidifier definitely helps at night. Accidentally skipping one night was all the confirmation I needed.

Worse part for me has been the swelling of my tongue and pain in my jaw... maybe that's why I think the throat pain isn't so bad. My jaw is clicking and popping like I have TMJ.

I think when it comes to my throat I could eat just about anything at this point, but if it involves a lot of chewing, my jaw and tongue gradually tighten up to the point where I just stop eating. So, for now, I'm sticking with thick (but not chunky) soups, yogurt, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, etc.

I wouldn't call the experience better or worse than expected. Just different. Certainly looking forward to eating real food again.

hi im 14 years old and on day 4, it still hurts but its a little less pain. the doctors wont give me vikeden but im still managing. it helps if yur constantly eating Popsicles. everything i drink comes out my nose and idk why. anyone else having this? in the back of my throat it feels like there is skin dangling. it it extremely disgusting. my tongue feels no pain exsept when i move it it gets sharp erges of pain. i hope by tomorrow it will feel less pain. i tried eating macoronii and bread but it scratches my throat. the first 2 days i was not hungy and lost 3 pounds. im maintaining th same weight right now. i thought losing weight was a plus from this but i find myself very hungry with nothing to eat. my doctor said eating and drinking will help because you are moving the muscels. so try to eat and drink often. other than that i feel fine, just taking it day by day because in the end all the pain is worth it!

15, female
I got my tonsils taken out four days ago(along with my adenoids). The pain is bearable, I suppose. My neck, ears, throat and tongue hurt though. The tongue is by far, the worst. It prevents me from really eating anything other than frozen liquids and mush. My sister ,who is almost 19, just had hers out as well and she had the same problem. We are assuming that the doctor burnt our tongues during the operation. =/ I'm currently on Codeine and it helps the pain allot. I suggest for ear pain to use a heating pad and to just eat cold foods for a while. Im not really sure what I was expecting after the surgery but I didn't think it would be this bad. I also wake up at odd times (I'm not sure if this is due to the medicine or what)

Thank you everyone for posting on here. I thought I was the only one having weird tongue pain so bad I can't hardly swallow. Did anyones turn out to be thrush? Bc mine is bright red with white film on it. It DOES hurt worse than the throat! Noone ever mentioned that! Day 4 and ear pain just starting, thanks for making me aware of that also so I didn't think I was not recovering normally.
