Hi I am a 37, female and I realize this post was made about a year ago, but I am somehow hoping this reaches someone that has any ideas as to what to do... I had my Tonsillectomy/sinus cleaning Dec. 26th 2013.

I was pretty proud of myself handling the pain for the most part, just really uncomfortable if anything. I thought to myself, once they clear my nose and I can blow it again, this will make a huge difference... oh it did. constant pain. My right ear more than my left is always hurting.

The first hour after my week visit, I felt great leaving the hospital, then I got a little sick to my stomach and had to lay down. I woke up with the most horrific migraine, along with my ears and throat hurting. Ahhh! It was awful!

As soon as the medicine stopped working I would be awakened with immediate pain in my right ear. (mind you when I went to the doctor that thursday, she said it could be expected and that my ears were not infected)I started staying ahead of the medicine game making sure it didn't wear off before the next dose and now even that doesn't work.

Will swimmers ear (the medicine) help, can I spray that cherry throat numbing medicine, will that help. I am looking for anything this is pure madness.

I my tonsils and adenoids taken out 12 days ago and everything seems to be normal other than the pain in my tongue. I also still have the death breath from what seems to be my nasal cavity. I wanted to know if anyone else had a large fleshy mucus block/chunk come out of their nasal cavity into their mouth or throat, I did and it had the same putrid scent that my breath/taste in my mouth has. It was surpisingly large and I had no idea how it fit up there.

Also, I hope none of us have thrush and its just an imbalance of the "good bacteria".

When does the eating get better? I have the same issue and I'm on day 24 and I have to regurgitate my food to swallow again and drink something to have it go down. Pain in tongue when does that go away?

I am day 5 post op. It's Sunday and I had my tonsillectomy on Tuesday morning. Hopefully I can help someone out there. I'm 33, mom of two young boys and work full time. Took an entire week off and probably could have used two weeks but that's too dramatic for me. First day, when you are out of surgery, you are in pain yes and have an empty stomach. I made a point to eat longer lasting complex carbs and protein the night before surgery. On an empty stomach, coupled with pain med and anesthesia, you probably will get nauseous. I had my mom and husband tag team and call the doctor late that night and the other one ran to the pharmacy to get the anti nausea prescription pills that dissolve under your tongue. They were very helpful as I was terrified of vomiting after the surgery. Don't be afraid to ask and maybe even ask the doc before the surgery so you have a plan and peace of mind. Calming my stomach and getting pain relief without dehydrating myself vomiting was a step in the right direction. Doc prescribed lidocaine and liquid loritab (hydrocodone) for my pain. By the end if day two, I didn't find the loritab helping for as much pain as it caused going down. I ended up calling my doc and asked for Percocet which is stronger and I had previously taken in for my c sections, laparoscopy, etc and found it to relieve pain well. Also, I wanted a pi to quickly swallow vs the liquid fire of loritab that burned my throat for a solid 20 minutes after taking it. Doc called in the Percocet. It definitely helps with the pain. Day 3 and 4 were pretty much the same. I actually ate sandwiches both days. Yeah it was uncomfortable when swallowing, but facing my energy back to heal and having food in my stomach to take my pain meds was worth it. I'm on day 5 post op (technically day 6) and since the 3rd day I have had the ear pain like most people. I use a heating pad on my ears and still put the ice bags on my throat. All at the same time. It works for me. It's all about being comfortable to pass the days. I actually thought about canceling the surgery when I would read about the pain. Is the pain bad? Yeah, but mostly it stinks because it's in your throat/mouth/ears which are sensitive areas to begin with. Before my surgery I had just gotten over having strep throat for about 6 weeks. Which if you've had it, you know it comes with the horrible body aches and misery, not just a massive sore throat. This surgery was like having the soreness of the strep throat. No body aches though and on the bright side, I knew that each day I was healing. If you had chronic tonsillitis and strep like I did, please don't be afraid of the surgery. You're already tough as nails because you get strep so often. Just look at it as your likely LAST BOUT OF STREP THROAT. I know my recovery isn't over yet, but I hope I help someone out there. Tonsils can cause sooo much pain to people, why wold anyone think that having them removed would be painless? It's not, but it is worth it. And, you can and will get through it. Good luck to everyone. Jamie from Florida.

Hi - after my tonsillectomy my tongue was black along both sides. Now at day 6 the pain in my tongue is terrible - I have had to start taking the Tramadol again as it was unbearable. Throat is also sore and felt like there was something dangling down it ? stitch? My mouth is too sore to open to have a good look. I probably haven't been drinking enough water.

I'm 14 years old and I had my tonsils taken out 4 days ago. My throat doesn't hurt that bad unless you don't take the medication. My voice has changed a lot (in a bad way) and I've lost almost 10 pounds. OveralL, what hurts the most is my tongue. It's not the front of it or back, it's the back sides, underneath my tongue. It hurts so bad, I can't even eat anything. I barely put 200 calories in me a day. I weighed 150 pounds when they checked me at the hospital now I'm nowhere near that. I don't really mind tho cause I've always wanted a skinny body. I haven't talked to my doctor about this tongue situation but I will. f*****g faggots. They never said anything about my tongue.

I'm 21 male and so far everything has been going okay I guess. Day 1 after surgery was by the worst for me. Don't eat ice cream it produces too much phlegm and it's very very gross. I'm now on my sixth day and I'm feeling a lot better. On scale 1-10 for throat pain I'd day 3 and for my tounge I'd say 5. I feel like my tounge was camped wayy too hard but I guess it just takes time to heal. I got thrush and I lost taste to sweetness so I called my doc and he prescribed FFLUCONAZOLE and said it should go away if not take another in three days well I took one yesterday and the white coding is fading away but the tastes for sweets has yet to return. Has anyone else had this problem and does it return? The pain meds that I was on made me sick and vomit that was very painful!! I stopped taking it immediately I think dealing with the pain was better. I've been eating better and drinking lots of Gatorade since it's not too sweet I can taste it and it keeps me hydrated. I do notice that I like water a lot more than I used too. I ate chicken on my 5th day. I made sure it was fully chewed before swallowing didn't hurt and went down fine I also look at my tonsil beds to see if I scratched them and they looked fine. Now what is this i hear the americans and the english have different methods of healing is that true? I also had bad sinuses before surgery and had to blow my nose every 2 minutes but every since the moment I woke up after surgery I haven't had to blow it since. The only time I did blow it is when I was throwing up and I cried a little bit because of the pain it brought. I'm loving a clear nose :)

I had my tonsils out 6 days ago and if I knew how painful it was going to be I wouldn't have bothered. They really don't inform you on what happens afterwards. One day one I was in the hospital most of the day, for me coming round from anaesthetic was absolutely horrible, I had a massive panic attack and ripped my cannula out. They gave me oramorph which worked wonders, I had hardly any pain. I had nothing to eat that day. On day two there was more pain but I slept most of the day so it was bearable. I managed to eat a spoonful of mousse although I felt like it was going to come out my nose, I also managed toast with the crusts cut off with lots of butter on, it did take me around 20 minutes to eat though. Day three was pretty similar to day two, I managed to sleep from 10:00-6:00 (pm to am) which was good because every other night I've woken up every hour or so. I managed to eat a spoonful of a vanilla yoghurt but I couldn't eat the rest. I also ate some more toast. Day four I felt okay, I managed to eat a whole mousse yoghurt and I had managed chicken soup poured into a cup which had gone quiet cold, it made the pain feel better and it didn't hurt as much to talk. I attempted soup again that night and I wish I hadn't of bothered, I had a horrible pain in my ears and my mouth felt worse. Day five was even worse for me. I woke up with my mouth hurting but it was bearable. I attempted to eat some noodles because I hadn't of had much solid food, I managed a few mouthfuls but it just hurt. That night I attempted food from the Chinese as It has lots of calories and I had rice with bbq sauce, the rice was okay to swallow if I swallowed like 5 grains of rice then drank water. I managed a few spoonfuls but then it began to hurt. I went to bed with a terrible eat ache and my mouth hurting. Day six has been the worst day so far, I woke up in agony and cried my eyes out for a good hour, the pain is a lot worse when waking up and not as bad midday but i find its horrible at night. I drank some water and the pain began to soothe. I attempted eating noodles again and it hurt, which lead me into crying because all I want to do is eat and I can't even swallow solid foods. I also tried mushy peas with gravy to make it more mushy, this went down nicely but painfully so I only managed a couple of mouthfuls. I'm dreading going to sleep because I don't want to wake up and feel how I did this morning. When I was in the hospital I was guessing I would be given medication for pain and all I got given was paracetamol. From being given oramorph in hospital to using paracetamol is a big change and quiet frankly it's doing nothing for me. The first few days I had a foul taste in my mouth, brushing my teeth didn't change this and it was literally awful, my breath hasn't beeen very nice either. The taste of day 6 is pretty none existent. My mouth is still very sore but some of my scabs have come off but I still have a lot of red marks in my mouth which is soreness. I haven't had any problems with my tongue other than it being coated in a white paste thing. In the first few days when I drank water it would come out of my nose, which I we quiet concerned about. I haven't bled at all which I'm so relieved about and I'm hoping I don't bleed anytime soon. I sneezed on like day three and it was honestly the most painful thing I've experienced. When they did the operation they have managed to crack both my front teeth through the middle which I'm not happy about at all so now I'm going to have to get that sorted. Not eating is having a big effect on me and I can't wait to till I can go to McDonald's and eat a whack off burger. I am generally past hungry. If you're having your tonsils out prepare yourself for pain, drink a lot of ice water as it does help, try and eat.

I'm 40 and 9 days ago I had a tonsillectomy, uvulectomy and turbinate ablation! Whooh! Doc said it would be a lot of pain! Tongue is numb and half of it tastes "burnt" like I burned it and the food on that side tastes burnt as well. I'm told this is normal and will fade as I heal. I was on Lortab (liquid Vicodin) switched to pill form, it was aggravating the tongue tingling, taste oddity and numb sensations. Also NO DAIRY!!! i started on ice cream and it creates more mucus which makes you "hock" more mucus out which increases healing time and bleeding. I switched to Italian Ice and Sherbert for ice cold feel and of course lots of water. When I get sick of water I do half juice half water or room temp tea with honey. Nothing hot yet.. homemade mashed potatoes is great seasoned lightly with skim milk and a little butter some garlic and bacon bits for flavor. Also, cut down on anything that makes you gassy or burp - hurts like hell! I found soft pretzel you can microwave is good to absorb gas. I never ate so slow in my life - 2 small pretzels took 45 minutes. I m able to talk normal for a while but pain kicks in faster, i've learned to talk low or whisper to reduce pain. I will be out of work at least 3 weeks. I talk 40 hours a week for a living otherwise may have been less time out.

I'm 17 and I on day 5. I have the same pain in the back of my tongue and in my ears. Everything I eat seems to go up my nose a well, ive been so hungry but haven't managed to be able to even finish a cup of applesauce or a cup of jello. Sucking on ice to numb the pain doesn't work either. It only causes more pain. I can hardly open my mouth, and I tried chewing gum because I had read that it helps exercise the muscles but it didn't help either. I keep taking the pain meds but they wear off too quickly. Now I'm more worried about how yellow the back of my throat is. is it possible that it is inffected? I brush my teeth gently and have been careful to not swallow anything. I rinse my mouth when it feels super nasty. 5-6 times daily. And I drink plenty of fluids. Help?
