Hello, I occasionally wake up with tonsil pain, usually starting either on the right or left. Today, it is on the right. Its the first time in about a few months that i had this. Over the past few years, i had it pretty consistantly every other month, for a day it would knock me off my feet, the next day, it would either be fine or almost fine. I feel sligtly sick. I went to ENT a few years ago, since i have a small swollen lump in side of left neck. They said it was nothing to worry, and the tonsils are normal size (one is slightly larger then other).
Is this all normal and just a sign on my tonsil catching the bugs before they travel through my body? I have sinus drip, which is what they think causes this. I notice that almost always, when i have a tonsil issue, the day or night prior, i drank alcohol and/or spicy food. I was also told i had GERD, but i think i have that under control.

Thanks for any insights!

ooh! last night i had a small bit of wine. the night before, some spicy thai food... now today, my left tonsil is swollen and hurts all the time, especially if i swallow... i have pondered the idea of tonsils catching bacteria before they move through the rest of your body too. but now that i see a trend of this happening twice this summer, i think about getting my tonsils removed often (plus a friend just got them removed and loves it). i'm glad to see your spicy/alcohol comment though. this makes me feel more in control with the situation. thanks!
