Still trying to find the forum where I originally saw this... but ladies, there IS a cure for it! Basically your body is reacting to this foreign object and wants to get rid of it (don't ask me more on that because I don't remember, sorry lol). It basically throws things out of whack. If you START TAKING A PROBIOTIC it puts everything back in harmony and like normal. It may not work for all but it definitely has worked for a lot of women including myself. I was suggested the brand Accuflora which I have always used since. But it became harder and now impossible to find. So I'm trying to do so research on a similar one. So scared to switch as I don't want that odor to come back! But try it ladies, good luck!

Thank gosh I have come across this thread!! I had my mirena inserted 4 weeks ago and only 2 weeks ago noticed an insanely DISGUSTING, FOUL, FISHY ODOUR!!! this smell is unexplainably disgusting! It seems as though we not made aware more of this side effect??? I thought "Ok, this odour may go away as my body gets used to having a foreign object inside me" but as far as I can see most of you guys have had the mirena way longer than me - years and the odour is STILL occurring! I believe I may have to have this IUD, ONLY because of the smell - I cannot deal with this odour anymore

It's better to learn natural contraception methods. IUD is not required. Wanna discuss?

So I’ve been experiencing the same thing as far as the smell for about 3 months. It’s really hurt my self esteem and killed a lot of my sex drive so I’ve been doing crazy research on how I can fix it and In a podcast I listen to they were talking about boric acid treatments. It has honest been my saving grace. You can find it on amazon. Love wellness was the first one I got and it worked great but you only get 14 opposed to 30 for the same price off amazon. They are suppositorys and you can use them anytime it comes back. I’m still suspicious of my iud and am scheduling an appointment to talk to my doctor but this definitely helps if it’s hurting everyone’s confidence the same way. Best of luck ladies:)

Hydrogen Peroxide douche. Dr. doesn’t really recommend but there is a study showing it more effective than antibiotic for BV. I generally needed to use it once a month after period. Eventually went away

Can the IUD cause vaginal odor and unpleasant smell?

I've had the same problem with Paragard, strange musty garbage odor. I'm not totally convinced that this is the problem, but I sure hope it is because then I can do something about it. I have never had odor issues before and I have been checked for yeast, BV, UTi& STD. All clear. I'm going to have it removed. It has been almost a year inserted. I had one in the past with only mild coppery scent. This is definitely stronger and more offensive.

I had a copper IUD for 3 years. Shortly after getting it, I started to notice a fishy smell around the time of my period every month or during ovulation. During sex it was very unpleasant. I had it removed 3 months ago and the smell went away. And I never had it before getting the IUD. Hope this helps!

Its been 2.5 years for me with a copper iud. It moved,so i had it but back to place by a gynae,he used the insert sonar and also did my pap that day and i think that may have caused an infection because since then I bleed and constantly discharge. 3 months later my discharge now smells like ammonia,no pain anywhere. I'm thinking of removing it. The smell of my discharge haunts me. My vagina has not gottwn to breathe for 3 months now because I'm always wearing a liner or a pad. Last month's period i went for 7 days.

I’ve been reading so many questions and answers across different platforms and your answer is so good and straight to the point so thank you for responding to this person in the way that you did. I have had mine for four months and after two was tested for the odor and was told there is no infection, I can only hope it subsides otherwise I need this thing out immediately :(

This is exactly my situation right now. I've been an iud user for 8yrs right after my 2nd child. Been married for 10yrs and just recently I've been having this ammonia like scent on my panties. I've noticed I'm always wet/moist. I thought it was just sweat but the slight smell makes me think otherwise. I do not have any discharge at all just the scent. I go through so many panties because I'm nervous that others can smell it too. I'm not sure if it's because I'm dehydrated which can cause highly concentrated urine or its my IUD. I truthfully believe it's my iud but goodness, I like having one because having more babies is completely out of the picture for us.
