During the last week or so I have been noticing an increased amount of white discharge. It is white, gooey, has no odor, and is not cottage-cheese like. Also, during the same time I have also been experiencing cramping in my abdomen. I'm on birth control, but have been for 4 years and never have experienced this. I had a pap smear a month ago and everything was normal. I am sexually active with my boyfriend. We do not use condoms but we both were tested for STD's before we started sleeping together (about a month ago) and everything was good. Is it possible that I'm pregnant even though I'm on birth control (the pill)? If not please help!

I don’t think that you are pregnant if you used it as directed. After all, birth controls do three things to prevent pregnancy and if used as directly, chances are minimal. Birth control pills prevent ovulation, if ovulation happens, they prevent fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus and they also prevent sperm from entering the uterus.

Did it happen that you miss a pill or you have been taking it regularly? Is your period late? Increased vaginal discharge happens when we are ovulating as well as cramping but you can also experience excessive vaginal discharge when you are having too much sex. It happens to me often that I have discharge days after having frequent sex with my boyfriend.

When are you about to get your period?

Thanks for the help. I have been taking my birth control regularly. Although some nights I take it much later than others. I have been taking it since I was 16 (I'm 20 now) and I have never had this much discharge. My boyfriend and I have a very active sex life. So I guess that could be a cause. But I still don't know if the cramping is associated with it or not because I have never experience that mid-cycle. I'm not due for my period for another two weeks.

How likely are my chances of getting pregnant while on the pill? One of my sister's friends has. Yes, I am on the pill, but if we were to get pregnant we would welcome it with open arms. We just want it to happen when it happens...

The chances are minimal to get pregnant on the pill. It is said that they are 99% effective and I already wrote you about what they do to prevent pregnancy. If you don’t want to get pregnant, then you should take the pills at the same time every day.

Since you are two weeks apart from your period, this is exactly the time of your ovulation when estrogen is producing a lot of mucus and when women usually experience a lot of discharge. This is also the time when cramping may be experienced, so I think everything’s ok.

I was on Birth Control the entire time I was in High School. First things first, YOU DO OVULATE ON THE PILL!!!!! The only thing the pill does is help to prevent the fertilized egg from implanting ( word for word from my Dr.). Women must ovulate to prevent becoming sterile. The only Birth Control that I encountered that stopped ovulation was the DEPO Shot. I was on it for a year and was told by my OB-GYN that I needed to stop it immediately because it was interfering with my fertility. Extra discharge definitely can occur with increased sexual activity, It does for me as well. You are also in a point in your life when your body is really maturing. Your cycle will change periodically as you mature more and more. All of these are normal that you are speaking of. Im 4 years older than you are and I remember going through the exact same thing. Hope this helps.

people can feel cramping and increased discharge when they are ovulating.  Time it out for a few months with a calendar and see if corresponds to that time in your cycle.

I read a reply on here that said the pill does not stop you from ovulating. What I know about it I have copied and pasted below.

"Primarily, the Pill works by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). If an egg is not released then of course conception cannot take place. As a back-up, the Pill also makes the mucus released by the cervix thicker so the sperm cannot get through and thins the lining of the uterus so a fertilised egg has difficulty implanting."

This is why people with PCOS sometimes take the pill because it prevents those big cysts from forming on your ovaries. I just wanted to try to clear that part up.

My friend was on the shot for 2 years and she got pregnant twice. So, birth control does not always work!

You do not ovulate when taking the pill.....that is how it works. It prevents the egg from releasing so you don't get pregnant....therby stopping ovulation as ovulation means that you are releasing an egg.
