I'm glad I discovered this msg board as I thought I'd read everything I could on CV. I've spent countless hours researching cytolytic vaginosis online as I've had this issue for 2 years. It all began after I had unprotected sex with a new partner. It started out as itching on my right labia minora, but no discharge. Then as it progressed, I began itching on the inside and outside, I developed a significant amount of discharge, and sex became painful because I was dry. I'd never had an issue with dryness, so this was definitely something new. With regard to the discharge, sometimes the discharge is thin and watery, other times it's thick and pasty, but there's never been an odor. I've been swabbed, cultured, poked, prodded - YOU NAME IT! I've seen various doctors for this condition only to be told that it's yeast and nothing else. Although topical treatment such as Terconazole and Miconazole do help with the itching/irritation, it's only a short-term solution. The itching/irritation are the worst after my period. I've done the baking soda sitz baths, but they are only soothing while I'm in the tub. Once the discharge begins to seep out again, I'm miserable again. I've suspected from the very beginning that it was an overgrowth of lactobacillus, but I highly suspect the doctors don't even consider CV since cultures clue them in on things that should NOT be there. Lactobaccillus is a good bacteria and should be there, but if there's an overgrowth, it's still not considered an "infection" hence why it probably doesn't appear in a culture.
Although I've yet to find a cure, I have discovered that Preseed personal lubricant works the best. You can get it at most drug stores and it's about $24 a tube. It's pricey, but it's the only thing that I have found to eliminate most of the itching and discharge. When I first began to use it, it didn't work, but the secret is to add a little bit of baking soda to it, and that seems to do the trick. I fill the Preseed applicator with about 2 grams of lube and then I sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on a napkin and put two pinches of baking soda in the applicator and insert it at bedtime. If you use too much baking soda, it will burn, so just keep that in mind.
A few other posters mentioned liquid calcium, so I just started using it this morning. I'll report back to let you know if it has helped or not. I really think this is a hormonal issue, but being on birth control for two months did not help this issue at all. However, I'm determined to nip this in the bud once and for all and find some long-lasting relief.
