Walk after bunion surgery

I had bunion surgury on feb 17th , I had a bandages on for 3, weeks then returned to have my stitches removed and a mini cast put on ! Today 29th march I went back to hospital to have my cast off and had some physio I was trying my best to walk but was putting pressure stil on my crutches !! An was also told to bathe my foot because of dry skin and was told to put a normal shoe on :( I've tried this an cannot get into any shoes :( I would not recommend this surgury wish I had off left it :( how long has it taken most of you to get back to walking ?

hi i had surgery in december 2011. four months on i can walk ok but regret surgery because the scar looks horrible. i cant wear some shoes yet and cannot tiptoe fully like my other foot. i heard it takes at least 6 months to a year. i tried my heels but cant walk im just in uggs and flipflops. i still have a pain like before so its really not worth it.

I had a bunionectomy & cheillectomy done a week ago. My main question is this - who thinks I'll be able to do scuba lessons 8 weeks post- op ? Is this just too much wishful thinking to think I'll be able to get in flippers and flap my feet around in a pool learning to scuba ? I'm going to be really sad if I'm not able to & I know I may have to wait and see (that's what my doctor said). The over arching theme of all theses posts seem to be about patience ........ugh....:)

yeah it is patience. i havent tried swimming yet but im sure you'll b ok but might b swollen still

I had bunion surgery done 3-1-12 the first week I had a walker. Second week no walker stitches were taken out the pain wasn't bad if u don't chase the pain. Take them every four hours than u can determine how long u can go without meds I like started out every four hours than pushed to five etc til I didn't need them. Third week still n a boot ice pack still but I can do more TOE EXCERCISE PLEASE NO EXCEPTION if you it will stiffen up NO INCISION ON THE TOP SIDE ONLY now it is 4-2-12 I'm fine no meds still a lil sore but fine oh also I had my baby toe broken to have it straightened at the same time it fine now to and had a incision done on the back of the same leg. So trust me if I'm in lil yo no pain and your only having a bunion done you'll b fine just remember sleeping is hard walk you get inpatient showers you will miss :-)

Just had bunyon surg. 4-27-12 and also had plantar's plate repaired because it was ruptured and 2nd toe was shortened and metatarcel connecting that 2nd toe was shortened because my 2nd toe was too long and it became dislocated. was given a super nice brace w/2 inflatable pillows that are just inside the boot at the ankle.  I walked on it today, wearing the boot, for about 2 minutes, only putting weight on my heel. it didn't hurt at the time, but I was wondering if this could have caused any damage.  Now there is pressure pain in front of my 1st & 2nd toe.  I hope I didn't do anything stupid.  Going for appt. Wed. for xray and to have stitches taken out.

I had the same op. as you on my foot in July 2010 and the other foot in Jan. 2011. I did not have a plate put in but the same cuts as you and now 16 mths. on since last op, I have to wear a lace up type of shoe every day. My toes are fused which can happen after this type of op. and I can not go up on my tiptoes or bend them behind me. I make the best of it as there is nothing they can do ,but I do wish i could wear a shoe with a small heel. I hope this is some help to others

Hi al wel since I last posted I was worried about walking again :/ ha I had my op feb 17th this year , an as soon as I got my cast off on 29th of march I walked but had a limp !! After a few sessions of physio cured my limp so now I'm walkin normal , and doing exercise ! Which must be done !!!!! I can stil be sore if I'm getting up on tip toes an scar stil sensitive to touch , also I was a serious fan of high heels and it's been 2 months now and still no sign of getting into them :( I managed a half an hour in a high open toe sandal for my sisters communion , anybody no how long it will be before I can manage a heel ?:) I'm only 21 grrrrr :)

My 14 year old daughter had the ultimate bunion operation, meaning they had to cut a wedge from herbone below her toe to swing it back into place. It has been 2 months and she healed but doctor said she can only walk for the first 2 months. Its been 5 days and she is walking with a limp. Do you think this is normal or should she be walking normal now?

Update on my two feet---I had one done on July 2010 and the other one on Jan 2011. i had the bone taken out below the big two and two incisions .one at the side of big toe and other between the big toe and the one next to it. The scars are fading a bit but I still can,t go on my toes they are fused. I also still get bad nerve pain and its bad if i put on a small heel shoe. I don,t think I,ll ever walk properly but the pain is better now than before the op. and my feet look nicer. I wear flipflops a lot an a lacing shoe which are good very light called d,lites skechers .the weather here in scotland is not very good so restricts me what to put on my feet most days. Hi all !! I was the one that had my operation 17 feb this year , it is now 5 months since I got my cast off !! Physio is completely done !! Long ago !! I am fine now to walk , run everything !! In all my shoes now !! Stil struggling with high heels ! But considering its only 5 months since my op I'm doin great :) ! I can wear one toe wedged heels which are all in fashion :) and I'm 22 now .. Recovering so wEll getting up on my tip toes sometimes can still be a little bother !! And just home from Spain and my scar is nearly gone! You wouldn't think I had anything done :) 

no it takes a while to get back to walking correctly ! it took me a few physio sessions to get the limp gone has she had physio its painful but really worth while .

Can anyone show me how to walk properly? I am in my 6 th week and my doctor didn't really show me. He said put pressure on heel, but no  one can walk with heel only? Do i put my foot down flat after heel? He really didn't go into detail. He told me to start walking during my 5th week, but i stayed off my foot to be safe. I won't see him for another 2 weeks. Is there a video or any advice on how to walk properly. Thanks.

So my surgery was on the 6th Dec 2012. Have the same incisions and yes I got the same reason "tension". Surgery was great, not much paid. Had my first clinic day on 14th - feet looks great - good color, no swelling, bandages changed and this is when my discomforted started. Can't sleep at night, foot tingling ......but I could have kind of taken myself to the bathroom on a rolling stool. On the 21st had my 2nd clinic day - removal of stitches - OMG ..... one of the most painful experiences I've ever had ...... the stitches where so tight and embedded in my flesh ........ took the Drs from 12.09 - 12.40 to remove same. Since the stitches are off ..... can't even use the rolling stool. I'm totally off my feet. The Dr also advised my that in 2 day's time ... which makes it 24th Dec ( Christmas Eve) I am to remove the bandages and re dress. Looking forward....... So what happens next ? Anyone care to share ?
