I was a two time Accutane patient. The first time, I had all the usual side effects of dry lips and hair loss. There was little or no change to my weight - while I was taking it. In fact, normally I would gain during my cycle but I didn't while taking Accutane. I thought it was because I was running more often. When I stopped taking it, I put on about 10 pounds. No matter what I did, I couldn't take that weight off. Still thought it was just me.

Fast forward about 2 years later, and I still hadn't lost the weight, but I hadn't made the connection to Accutane yet. My dermatologist wanted to put me on another round - it was a 5 month treatment. The third week of treatment, the 10 pounds I couldn't lose came off over a span of only 5 days. Also, I felt terrific. Everything was affected, work, school, chores around the house, activity level in general and exercise. Except for these occasional headaches in the middle of my head.

I asked my derm if the Accutane was responsible for my weight loss. He said just make to eat a low fat diet (he may have thought it was the effect of Vitamin A in the liver).

When I stopped taking the Accutane, I gained 20 pounds in 3 weeks, and ever since I've had a heck of a time with dieting. To lose weight at all, I have to starve and exercise. I have so many injuries, it's no wonder my limbs are all attached. If I stop exercising, regardless of my diet, I gain weight.

Don't take Accutane. Just don't take it.

My acne has totally cleared up! My face is gorgeous and smooth. I can finally walk around without make-up on! I am a Cosmetologist so my image is very important to me and my customer alike!

My lips are as dry as the dessert and terribly chapped.(Bleeding, peeling burning, Chelitis in the corners of my mouth) (I spent 13.00 on a beauty supply store brand of chap stick! It didn't touch the dryness!) I am horribly aggressive. (Last night when I was playing soccer I pushed the referee down and punched the wall, all because he called me on personal foul! ) (I am usually even tempered) I have gained nine pounds despite running 6 miles 5 days a week at a gym. (I am at 136 now) I always eat low fat, low calorie food because I am an avid runner. I wouldn't say I am depressed at all, however, since I am in the public's eye with my occupation and I notice an unusual response to my dry dessert like lips especially in addition to my pale pastey white skin and, unwaxed eye brows I do have to admit that alone would be enough to make anyone who was used to those luxuries, very sad!

Most importantly my vision at night has been severely impacted. It is like looking through sunglasses at night! I once had perfect vision, but now I am positive I need glasses. I can not see more then 3-4 feet in front of me, and this is causing headaches.

All these complication occurred by month 6 of treatment in a 26-27 year old female. I had severe nodular acne since the age 14. My face is perfect presently.

READ THIS!! IT REALLY CHANGED MY LIFE I have been on accutane for four months and show no signs of, or symptoms commonly believed to be associated with accutane. Even though, some researchers believe it may increase the likely hood of depression, I have had no symptoms. This is true even though 5 of the 9 children in my mothers family are diagnosed with severe cases of depression and bipolar disorder. NOT everyone gets the symptoms! And, my face is clear. It all depends on the person. And personally I think diet has a lot to do with it, no matter how much doctors or others say that it is a myth. Like it says on the Jamba cups "your body is a temple" you should treat it right. An esthetician recommended that I stopped eating certain foods that are common as food allergies such as gluten, wheat, corn, chocolate, dairy, and peanuts. (what a list!). Even though these foods are not necessarily bad, they are common food allergens and can disrupt the digestive system, making it hard for your body to absorb other nutrients from foods you eat not containing any of the above mentioned ingredients. Try this: stop eating the above mentioned foods for a few months, see if your body reacts differently. If your face begins to clear start slowly integrating, one by one, each food back into your diet. If one of them makes you break out, you've found the allergen. Not an easy task but a very healthy/ patient one. I tried it and actually found that in my process of wanting to start accutane, my face cleared up even before i started the medication! I started the medication anyway, and it has greatly helped with the reduction of scars!
***As far as weight gain goes, if you try this diet (very free of processed/boxed/unhealthy foods) you won't have to worry about weight gain, you'll feel healthier, and your skin may even improve w/o accutane.
HOWEVER, because you are not eating these foods it is important to eat 4-5oz of protein w/ every meal, 1 cup cooked veggies, 1 cup raw, a little grain (ie- brown rice or quinoa). Carrots, sweet potatoes, beans, olive oil, and LOTS of garlic help with digestion and to clean out your possibly clogged system and clear up your face (vitamin A). Soy or Almond milk are great substitutions for dairy and taste awesome.
Acidophillus and protease/lipase are vitamins that help with digestion as well and work really really really well!
For gluten/wheat/corn free products trader joes/ or whole foods are great places to start!
good luck, hope this helps

you dont gain weight on accutane..actually its quite the opposite..
you loss a ton of weight because of all the water that you have to constantly pump throught your system...
i havent had any severe side effects..my face is dry and my muscles ache a little bit more..but other than that..im okay..dont be super concerned about the side-affects..
there are a c**p load of side affects with any medications..this drug just makes you tired and sore and dry..

My girlfriend started Accutane concurrently with Nuvaring. It has been only about one month now. I Don't know whats going on with her anymore. She breaks down on the little things, and she lost her energy for life! I'm doing all I can do to try to keep her happy; I rub her back, I talk to her all day when I can, I tell her how nice she looks, I help her around the house, I console her when her sister steals from her mom, I fixed her elliptical because she doesn't want to run anymore, I offered to exercise with her, I took her to a play, and everyday since she started taking both of these things she will be happy for a moment and then its gone. I'm scared. I don't want to lose her, but she blows up if I suggest it might be the medications affecting her mood...it got so bad I started having anxiety attacks! That only made things worse, because when I was having an attack it made her really sad and I couldn't see her for days until I was over it. Every day I just told myself its the drugs, its the drugs! I stopped smoking, drinking, caffeine and cigarettes just to make sure I would be able to stay in a stable mood when she can't anymore! This is a living hell, seeing the one I adore so much go through so much pain and stress! Before all of this, things would happen, but she could brush them off. I could cheer her up and help her not think about things. She used to be the one that cheered me up! I won't give up on her, soldiers don't give up damnit! I just hope I can get this figured out before she gives up on herself! She used to exercise every morning, be happy and creative, and tell me everyday how she was happy for something. Now she isn't happy, all she wants to do is eat when shes sad, and I don't care about her weight, I just care about how happy she is, but she won't be happy for long eating, because she took pride in losing so much weight! Its an emotional minefield for me! Its worse than war! WHO THE HELL LETS THESE f*****g THINGS INTO THE MAINSTREAM MARKETS! WHAT MONSTER DOES THIS TO PEOPLE! WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING! THEY ARENT RIGHT!

I've been on accutane for 2 months now, and i cant begin to describe just how good it is. i had acne over my face and my back, and it cleared it up really quickly.

im a medical student, so i was a little apprehensive at first about taking it because of all the side effects associated with it, but after a little reading, the side effects that need worrying about only occur in every 1 in 100000 or so.

the only side effect iv had so far is dry lips and dry arms. just keep lip balm handy and moisturise regularly and you'll be fine. no weight gain, just keep a close eye on your lipids if you have family history, or already have high LDLs.

I am on my 3rd cycle of accutane. I first took the drug 15 years ago.. and was on it for abuot 2 months, and the acne went away, and i stopped the drug.

Now, 15 years later, the acne is back, and bad.
I started at 40 mg until we did some blood work. when my blood work came back, we jumped it to 80 mg for one month. 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night.

In the 3rd month, after not much clearing, my dr put me on 120 mg. 2 pills in the morning, and 1 at night. Then I was clear for the most part

But, this is how bad it was.... You couldnt even see my face, arms, and back. It felt as the acne completly covered up my entire skin. It was BAD! It all when away except for my upper arms. But the dr. wanted me to stop the drug, and try cream, since it was for my arm.

5 months later, none of the acne came back, my upper arm never got better. Even took proactive and tetracyline, but nothing helped.
Wemt back to my dr. I begged him to put me back on the drug, and he said no. But, I wouldnt stop begging, till he caved in.
Three months late, I see about a 50% improvement, so i am hoping the last 2 months will make it all go away.

The side effects- I feel as i have 2, both pretty bad. Number one is contapation. But, i drink prune juice everynight, and it helps a lot!!
Side effect number 2- MAJOR DEPRESSION! I find myself always depressed. Nothing seems to make me happy. I am depressed at parties, at work( I enjoy my work, but now i find it to be unfulling-- been doing it for years, and it just started 2 months after the druf) I do not enjoy watching tv, when i use to, do not look forward to being intimate, when i was all the time.. its making me have no interest in many things in life. Sadly to say, it makes you not really want to go on.. makes you ask yourself, why am i even here, im not happy, and nothing is making me happy, NOTHING

But, i tell, in 2 months from now, you will not feel this way. And in 2 months from now, you will be so greatful for how you feel about life, and your outlook on everything, and you will reflect back to how you felt when you were on the drug, and realize how greatfull you really are. Just think positive, and if you are depressed, think about times in your lofe that made you so happy, and know that days like those will come again as soon as you stop the druf and its ouot of your system.

I'm on my 5th month of accutane and it hasn't been all that bad for me. My acne started clearing up with a few weeks. The only continuos side effect are dry lips and eyes and weight gain (about 10 pounds). I got a sun burn when I was on vacation (I was on a low dose and did everything I could to avoid burning), so I went off for a few days so I could heal. My advice to people with acne is to talk to a derm about it before you decide not to. Yes, there are severe side effects, but they don't happen to everyone. And you won't know if you're at a risk for them if you don't ask.

Macdani: You're simply wrong. I didn't change my diet or exercise routine and I gained fat. I also lost muscle mass. Those are both side effects. Maybe instead of making up stuff you should read the info that comes with the drug. Clearly your dermatologist should do the same. I am also not on birth control. I use other forms that do not affect my hormones or anything.

iVe been on accutane 20mg once a day for the first two weeks and then 40mg per day .So far, it has truely been the most amazing thing EVER! i sufferd from VERY, very bad acne, and now its clearing up - looking ever radiant and i have no bad side effects. The only side effects is, im OVER the top extreamly happy and full of life and energy and my body weight has gone up and i have had a RAPID increase in dense muscle growth and strength. Im not sure if has been scientifically analyzed; tho it has made me put on a fair bit of dense muscle! and for the ance, its all dried up in just 3 weeks and only left scarring.:-)

This was a dream come true for me after trying THOUSANDS of products and natural therapies..The above statement will not work for everyone, or for anyone else. I may have just drawn the lucky jackpot card. But is worth consulting with your dermatologist and run threw the procedures with them.

Wish the very best for you and this battle against such a horrored curse.
