After 10 years of being on prednisone and then 10 off, I just had to do a 2 month bout of it starting at 60mg and tapering off. This time I had very few issues with swelling and weight gain for 2 reasons. I was prepared this time! So I only ate a LOW sodium diet. That was a huge help. I also took Young Living Essential oils Grapefruit and their Spearmint. Young Living is the ONLY essential oil you can ingest. Do NOT buy a crappy one at the store. The grapefruit is a diuretic and the spearmint is specifically supposed to help with Cushings Syndrome, which is what you develop on prednisone. I was amazed and very happy this time. Now hoping to not be on it ever again! Good luck to everyone. (I usually just put a drop of the EO under my tongue or I added it to water and drank it. Not the grapefruit and spearmint together as that would have tasted bad!)

I have been on Prednisone for 9 years. I recently started tapering down, and have been at only 4mg for a month. My face and neck are still enormous. Is that due to the length of time I was taking it?? It seems odd that the swelling hasn't gone down at all yet, even at such a low dosage. It's disheartening.

Not sure if you are still on here but this sounds like chronic oedema. If you are off the pred you should consult a lymphoedema therapist who should discuss compression and lymph drainage to support your system. If your still on the pred this is harder but still feel consulting a therapist will help give you options. The pitting in your legs sounds like it is protein rich oedema. .. if possible keep active, if sitting long periods put the feet up. Do not buy compressing stockings from the chemist unmeasuered it could cause you more issues! !
I do not know your medical history but they may run other tests to check kidneys, heart etc to rule out any other potential causes.

Swelling us there anything I can take for it !!!

It takes me a month after I'm completely off of it for my body to release the swelling and go back to normal. If you gained actual fat/weight, you have to lose that with diet and exercise.

Eat no sodium, lots of water. Try the Young Living essential oils grapefruit and spearmint. Other brands can't be ingested. Use Young Living. They work! 90% swelling gone.

You're here, hopefully, to help. Not to be an as****e. If you can't be helpful, and humane, go somewhere else. Prick.

Yes I've been on pred for almost a year due to a kidney transplant and have both the swelling face and belly and went from 130 lb to over 185 lb. I don't like it at all but glad to have the new kidney. Just wish there was an alternative to the pred with less side effects

Hi! I've delt with pitting edema for years due to a kidney condition called MPGN. I take several different pills for it including prednisone and a water pill called bumentaide and it seems to go away when I stick to this regimen. Have you been tested for a kidney disease ? It could be the case where they aren't filtering correctly.

Some more (and better) advice would be to ask your doctor about the side effects and find out from him/her what steps, if any, you can take to alleviate some of the side effects. Prednisone is a VERY powerful corticosteroid and fishing for advice, and in reply getting answers that might involve taking other drugs (with or without your dr.'s knowledge) is very dangerous and could prove to be deadly. Of course these forums are very helpful and very important but I would think twice, or three times, before acting on another person's advice. Remember, you're taking these meds (hopefully) to stay alive.
p.s.- I'm on prednisone (tapering down from 40-on 15 now) and the swelling, insatiable hunger and the blurred vision in one eye is getting less and less every day. One important thing I do is drink a nauseating amount of water every day. At least one bottle, 16.9 oz., every hour or two. Keep the body hydrated and continuously flushing. The meds do their job but don't stick around longer than they have to. Again, as with any advice from a non-professional (me), run it by your dr.
Good Luck!!!
