I'm 55 years old and I'm an alcohol addict for 30 years now. Approximately 5 years ago i noticed chest pain on the left side and under my armpit back then I went to the doctor they did a series of tests and established that it was a minor arrhythmia caused probably by alcohol abuse. I didn’t have any problems till recently when I experienced the shortness of breath and even fainted once. I decided to go to my cardiologist again and he said that it could be a possible Cardiomiopathy, he ordered a series of tests that I'm supposed to take. I'm not so familiar with the term so I would like to know how dangerous it can be?

Cardiomiopathy is a very serious condition. It’s a disease of the cardiac muscle, a cardiac muscle inflammation, it has many causes in your case its probably worsened by your alcohol abuse. High alcohol levels cause constriction of blood vessels and that overloads the heart causing hypertrophy of one of the chambers. Enlargement of the muscle causes frequent arrhythmia of different types which makes things even harder to treat. The first thing you should do is give up alcohol completely if you do that you may have a chance of improving your health, in fact, many alcohol addicts lose most of the symptoms if they give up the consumption of liquor. The further treatment depends on the results of those tests you are going to take as the last resort a heart transplant may be needed, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
Good luck.
