Went on Christmas leave from Ft. Gordon, GA to Emporia, Kansas non stop to my buddy's parents farm with 4 other guys who paid for the ride to various places along the way. I didn't know any of them so me and my buddy shared the driving 2 hours on and 2 off. After we got into Alabama it was freezing rain until we crossed the river into Missouri. All night long at about 15 to 20 mph, cars off the road everywhere. Finally when we crossed the river it cleared up nice and dry in the daylight. Ran my 53 Chrysler New Yorker up to the peg to see how it felt trying to make up time. It felt OK so I dropped it back to 115 mph for a cruising speed for most of the rest of the trip into Emporia on US 50. Nice driving out there back in 1960. Everyone else was running over 100 too except on the Kansas turnpike which was strictly controlled at only 80 so most people avoided it if possible.
After I got out of the army I went back to Emporia for a few months where I rebuilt the engine on the Chrysler pulled it with a tractor to get it started because the starter wouldn't turn it over and headed for home in NH. I didn't dare shut it down until I got to Cleveland and another army buddy's house where I rested over night and hit the road again. Had to stop in a rest area on the Mass pike to take a nap for about 4 hours. Pulled out at 3 am and immediately got stopped by a pair of smokeys. When I reached over to get my registration from the glove box I noticed a .38 revolver staring at me through the passenger side window. They asked if I had any guns and I said two .22 rifles on the floor in the back seat under everything I owned which was piled up to the headliner. They looked at those and asked about ammo which was in the trunk in a picnic basket at the bottom of everything in there. They wanted to see that and I had to pull everything out of the trunk to get to it. Then they were going to drive away taking their flashlights with them leaving me beside the road in the dark with all my sh*t on the ground. I called them back to supply some light for me. Several days later back in NH I read about a robbery in Nashua that night I met the Mass smokeys where a couple guys held up someone with a .22 rifle and escaped into Mass. I guess they decided it wasn't me. I have no idea what the mileage is from Emporia to seacoast NH but I wouldn't attempt a trip like that alone today. You can do a lot of things at 22 that you wouldn't do at 76.
or
Raleigh, NC to Midwest City, OK.
With a partner, the farthest in one day was Seattle to Miles City, MT. Long day.
The longest I drove in a day was from SW Minnesota to Bloomington, Ill. So...across MN, through WI, and through a good chunk of Illinois. It took forever and my eyes were so tired that I was "crying" when I pulled up to the hotel.
I've done lots of these. I did Manhattan Beach, CA to Pensacola, FL (Aviation Officer Candidate School and Flight School); Pensacola, FL to San Diego, CA(first duty station); San Diego, CA to Corpus Christi, TX (to go be an instructor pilot); Corpus Christi, TX back to Manhattan Beach, CA (to go be a civilian again).
Herdon, VA to St. Louis, MO (another flying job) was easy. My last big drive was St. Louis, MO to San Diego, CA, to go back in the Navy.
I don't have to do any big drives for at least another three years! Yay! My next duty station is just across the bay from my current one, and an even shorter drive.
Farthest Teamwork: Baton Rouge, LA - Columbus, OH 15-17 hours? Don't remember? lol? (??? miles)
OR Baton Rouge - Orlando, FL and back. 11 hours each way. You could really count this, because we only stayed in Orlando for about 6 hours before returning home. I drove about 6 hours on the way there, and 10:45 on the way back.
I'm a driving machine... I love it. I can't wait to go on a road trip around the US. My sis did it 2 summers ago. 11,000 miles in 3 weeks. I hope to make mine at least 15,000. Care to donate a place to stay or gas money? LOL I'll make a post in a year when I know the dates.
