I've started reading this site only AFTER my surgery, had I found it before I would have been too scared to have the "simple procedure". I am convinced the doctors don't tell you about the recovery time because no one would ever have it done. I had mine on 3/2, it's 9 weeks out now. I would be a lot better if I hadn't had diarrea (sp?) for the past 2 weeks. I can't figure out what's causing it, but the fiber powders definitely make it worse. I've tried fasting, liquids, skipping dairy (which never bothered me in the past), brat diet, Pepto Bismal and nothing seems to work. I would be so much better if it weren't for that. Has anyone here had and solved this perplexing problem? I'm scared my hole is shrinking and I'll wind up with other problems. My dr. said it is already too narrow and boy does it hurt when he tries to "dialate" it. Yikes!

As for Patch's question on banding, it's much, much easier than the surgery. I had three done, separately, a few years ago, but the other 'roids were so bad and kept getting worse, I had no choice but to get them removed.

Thank you to everyone who has posted here, I've gotten some great suggestions and appreciate the camraderie, and it's good to know I'm not alone and this too shall pass.
Take care everyone

Hi all,
I had this surgery done on 3/2-it's 9 weeks out now, and I'm convinced the doctors don't tell you about the recovery because no one would ever have this surgery. I've been reading these postings for these weeks, and it's comforting to know I'm not alone and not crazy.

I would be a lot better if it weren't for the problem I'm having with diarrea (sp?). This is causing me a lot of distress, once a day is enough but 5 times is excruciating. I've tried all I can think of, fasting, liquid diet, brat diet, Pepto Bismal, etc. I've given up the fiber powders because they seem to make it worse. If anyone has had and solved this problem, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Patch, you asked about banding. I had three internal ones banded a few years ago, and it's a walk in the park compared to this surgery. A little discomfort-sure, but nothing like this. I'd wait a good year to make sure you're fully healed down there before you let anyone mess with it.

Thanks to you all for your comforting words and suggestions, I really appreciate your help.

LONG WRITES AHEAD....from Newbie.

There has been a great amount of information from everyone in this thread sharing post operative recovery from hemorrhoids.

I have 3 internals; 1 big and 2 medium class internals.
The big has been prolapsing now and then, when I do exercises....or sit too long ( 2-3 hours ).
It has been a hard decision if I should do the surgery- harmonic scalpels, so I have yet to schedule an ops session with my surgeon.
I have been seeing him for the pass 1.5 months now, since my first feeling of a big bulge after BM, and some bleeding session between.

The first oral medication was Daflon, to try to reduce my piles to "controlled" form. Since, I never knew what questions to ask, except if I needed surgery, he had answered..."We will have to wait and see"....but until today did I heard the dreaded news..."You have the option to excise the big one via PPH stapling or ultrasound".

Still in a dazed, however full aware from the discussion here, I now know the amount and length of pain I need to sacrifice.
The answer is...Yes, I do want the hemorrhoid to go.....but I see some sharing on relapsedas well as other minor complications which deters my initial plan.
I know postponing my surgery isn't the best resort as well....and since I've just started a contract job...I had no insurance or health benefits to take medical leaves....
It puts alot of things in tight decisions.

As the day wears on....I begin to decide putting my surgery on hold, and see how severe will my hemorrhoid be without Daflon medication and the end of the month.
I know this is stupid, but now that I have regular BM,and a possibly good dieting, I'm the least controlling my possible chronic outbreak.

about 8 glasses of water. Hot/warm sitz baths, cleaning the "place" and making sure it's dry, 3 assorted fruits daily; bananas, apples, pears...fibre vegetables; carrots, eggplant, brocolli, cabbage, cucumbers, corns, raisin-fruit breads...brown rice powder drinks....

Regular training of passing motions....to not strain at all.. and doing it fast 4-6 mins.

In short, my young lifestyle ( I'm mid 30s ) has changed completely. I sleep earlier, I do light exercises, I observe my food intakes (oils, cholestrols, fats ).

I don't think all this makes much difference, but in any cases, postpones or controls my hemorrhoid from flamming up.

I can see two parts of pre and post surgery from this thread....and alot of risk, mental challenge , pain and more patience is up ahead for both scenarios....
I still get prolapsing after BM, but praise God...it is still in control, no bleeding, and no harsh pain...just stage 3 with occasional Stage 2 symptoms.

Final words...
Yes... I do believe it's meant to be cut...it should be cut/ excised.
If the pain is gradual, and causes emotional insecurities in your daily life...eg: bleeding, pain, itch and more pain...then I guess it should be removed. But then again, one needs to know the post surgical impact , as shared mostly in this forum....( which I am thankful and extremely grateful).

I wish everyone fast healing, and a quick return to their normal lives.
I pray that I myself would have this controlled....after all, I've been living with it since 8 years old...just years of bad dieting and hectic busy working life has summed up this issue...

Peace be with you folks.
i had my hems removed with the staple procedure in january. i suffered for several days. worst was not being able to urinate and i had to get a catheter (spelling?). second day of hell was my bowls locked up and got hard. i could not release myself. i had to buy a water bottle enema and that loosend everything and then i could release bm. the actual stapling only gave me light aching. so the surgery was quick and fast. it was the aftermath and other complications that stunk. anyway, it is may and my bm's are fast and small. but i am paranoid that they may come back. so i eat almost everything with prunes and water. plus a lot of raisin bran, salad, etc.
I'm so glad to find this board. I'm supposed to be on the operating table as I write this. I found this website last night and from what I've read, the usual..."oh you'll be back to work in two weeks" scared me. Only, my doctor told me I'd be up walking around after TWO DAYS.

It was a tough decision to make, but after reading the horror stories of the recovery time and the pain afterward made me think twice.

I have suffered with hemmorhoids for 10 years on and off. These last 5-6 years has been awful. Bleeding, swelling, itching and feeling sharp jabs occasionally. I have the tucks wipes..the annusol suppositories and creams at my fingertips at all times. I have external and internal. One each.

My sister looked into the surgery a couple of years ago and the RN at the doctors office said.."no way would I reccomend this surgery to anybody." So, my family could not believe I would actually go through with this.

Again, thank God I found all your messages. I will stay with my creams, wipes and suppositories until someone comes up with a less painful surgery.

I am in pain now...but with Advil and everything else...can manage. I cannot imagine laying in the bed for weeks..let alone passing a BM after I'm ripped open and sewed back up. I can handle pain pretty well, but my rear end??! No way.

Thanks to all who expressed what they were going through and for being honest. Good luck to you all who are still suffering. I'm in pain also, but seems like a breeze compared to the after effects of surgery.
Here's some information of another way in non-srugical treatment for hemorrhoid stage 1-3, and some stage 4.

Not sure if you folks heard of Ultroid.

ultroid.com/index.html

I gave a couple of reading, and hope that my country had some knowledge on this non-invasive method to deal with the large scale of hemorrhoid cases.
I would clearly pay double for this, if there was such treatment available..but for US citizens, I think it's easier to get this treatment.

Relatively, 85%+ of success rate in treatment. No recurrance at this stage or complications.
Doctor would examine and then advise how many treatment is required.
The rest is read in the link above...

I am hoping this would be here. Aside from the 3-6 weeks of aggravating pain and post surgical issues, complications and etc...I hope Ultroid technology would be used instead.
Please post back here if you try it. I would be curious to know if it truly works.
It's been a few weeks since I stumbled across this godsend of a message board the night before my surgery. I went to the doctor one day and was supposed to have "office surgery" the next. In that small time I started to search the net. The next morning I could not get in touch with the surgen, as (fortunately for me) the phone lines in his office were down and he never returned any of my calls through an office assistant. In the time I tried to get in touch with him I decided against the surgery after reading all the stories and testimonials of recovery time on this and a few other sites.

I learned that this surgery was first done in the 1920s... so the natural thought process turned to what people who have undoubtedly suffered through this problem, have done through the ages. This began the endless search for any cures or advice that common knowledge and the internet could offer. I came across herbal cures and am very glad to say that THEY ARE WORKING.

I found a local herb shop the next day. I went in looking for butchers broom to make a tea out of and other herbs to make a natural salve. John, the owner helped point me in the right direction. He suggested a product called "VARI-GONE" rather than the tea. It's a multi herb capsule that's designed to help "support circulation for vein health, strength, and function." and designed for hemorrhoids, varicose and spider veins. It contains vitaminC, Horse chestnut seed, fenugreek seed, and butchers broom.

For a salve I found a recipe on the net that has also helped. *White Willow Bark, Goldenseal Root, and Aloe Vera Gel.* The white willow and goldenseal come in capsules, empty them into a small ammount of aloe vera, mix, and apply directly. (i originally used "golden salve" an olive oil mix that also contained comfrey seed.. another anti inflamitory agent, but I feel that the aloe had better results.

I've started eating better and using these two. The hemorrhoids that the doctor said wouldn't get any better than they were when he was ready to throw me to the wolves are probably less than half of what they were before, and continually getting better.

I hope this can be of some help to anyone out there. I know this is an uncomfortable and embarrasing topic, but I feel that this site is the best support that I have recieved. I thank you all for your very personal words and wish you all the best. For those of you who have had the surgery and those that are having problems I keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Feel better and best wishes.

... and sorry about any spelling and grammer problems.. it's been a long sleepless night spent working.
I am so happy for you. I wish that I had done some research before having this stupid surgery that I should never have had. It has been 8 months since I had the surgery and every day I wish that I could go back and NOT have it. I am on my 5th doctor who I think is finally getting me better but gradually. He says that I have an unhealed wound left from my hemorrhoidectomy. He recently cauterized the wound which felt terrible but I think has helped some. I refuse to have any more surgery on my rear. If I am not all better soon, I think that I will ask this doctor or seek out a doctor who will prescribe hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT is used to help heal "hard to heal" wounds. There is something to the phrase "leave well enough alone" when it comes to having ANY surgery. If your hemorrhoids don't cause you considerable pain then LEAVE THEM ALONE and try methods like the one listed in the post above mine. I mean this with all my heart. It feels good knowing that the person in the above post avoided this dumb surgery.
I found that diet has a huge impact on the nature and frequency of BMs after the surgery.

I was going up to six or seven times a day, right after the surgery, because the pain was causing me to not evacuate fully.

One thing I discovered way too late is that a massive jump in your fiber diet can cause problems -- Now he tells me. ;) So I'm tossing the rest of the box of raisin bran -- Shreaded wheat is plenty of fiber.

The other thing about fiber is the need for water. You'd think a lot of water would make diarrea worse -- but it takes water to activate the dietary fiber to bulk up the stools. I found that things like corn flakes caused runny stools for me.

I cut back a bit on red meat and added fiber cereals and several litres of water a day, and it beat the diarrea issue.

Patch, I'm sorry to hear about your issues. I had a triple removal about the same time with the "harmonic scalpel", and I'm back to a pretty normal life. The only residual issues is trying to relax a spincter muscle that's been clenched for 15 years, and that I'm a bit out of condition from the lack of exercise both before and after the surgery.

For people considering the surgery -- shop around for a surgeon. The surgeon's experience with a specific procedure does seem to relate to the number of post-surgical complications.

I had to look around to find a surgeon that was both on my insurance and had worked with the harmonic scalpel. It was worth the effort. With the ultrasonic shears surgery, I had remarkably little bleeding after the surgery. The recovery was no fun for the first month, but got progressively better after that.

I just shouldn't have put it off as long as I did.
I had a hemorrhoidectomy with 2 trom roids removed 8 days ago on Sunday, May 13. Thought recovery would be quick, per the doc and nurses... not! Had first BM 2 days after surgery; ow! The next day, was inconienent; so ER gave me a foley catheter; great, but believe me, not having the urge to pee, then BM is a hugh relief. At 8 days, I focus on making my stool as soft as possible, with both metamucil and docusate. BM is still extremely painful. Tried to go to work 3 days afterwards, Wed, and just about passed out. Had to get home to another sitz bath. The lingering bottom pain is now gone, except for about 3 hours after a BM. My bummer is that the doc couldn't get everything in one surgery (only 2 roids per surgery). So one more time down the road. Thanks to those who gave encouragement that it's worth it. It's got to be, but it is a tough road. The inflateable donut shaped pillow from Longs was totally worth the $17. Should have got it the day after surgery. Had to go to ER again 5 days post surgery due to lingering pain of exposed flesh. Turns out the cut away is normal, and your bottom will replenish the tissue from within, per the doc. So just wait, drink lots of water, and take those sitz baths and stool softeners. Here's hoping that my BMs will be far apart!
Well, after reading all these post, I think I will cancel my surgery tomorrow. I start a new job in two weeks...Dental Hygienist...sitting most of the day. Any advice? The last thing I want to tell my new employer is that I had hemrroid surgery! I just told them how I never miss a day of work! Now what??? The posts regarding all this pain is causing me to hurt while I speak! Today my surgeon gave me this new prescription mouse...proc??? something...it's has a very warming sensation for at least 20 minutes...feels really nice to the area (this is before surgery), so I imagine it will feel just as nice after surgery.
I'm more worried about going to a new job in two weeks? YIKES??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 8-|
If you are starting a new job in two weeks then I would CANCEL the surgery. Through all of my research on this surgery I now know that this is the absolute worst surgery to recover from and the most painful compared to almost ALL surgeries. Worse than: cancer surgeries, hip replacement, gallbladder, brain anerysm, bunion removal, etc., etc. etc.

ALso, there is NO easy way to explain (especially to a new boss) why you cannot go to work or for that matter SIT on your butt or drive in a car etc. There is NO way to take a break from using that part of your body on a daily basis. I now take practically NO pleasure from eating because all that I can eat from now on is fiber and fiber-rich foods because my rear-end almost always is in pain.

Please consider trying multiple different non-evasive measures in dealing with your hemorrhoids. Every day I wish that I could go back and make the decision to NOT have this stupid surgery. I wish that I had the decision that you STILL can make. There is NO such thing as a butt transplant but if there was I would jump at the chance for a new one because this surgery screwed up the one and only butt that I do have.

I only share all of this info because I wish that someone would have written it to me before I had my surgery because I would have chosen a different path for my life.
I agree. I had the operation on 13th January and it has been a roller coaster ride (one that I have had to take mostly standing up....hahahah)

I have had a couple of good days this week and actually had a pain free day today. I went out on my motor bike twice and went for a long walk with my Princess (fiancee) and our beautiful border collie dog. It is basically the first long walk I have been on since January.

So its now 10pm and I am just now starting to "feel" my butt as it's getting a bit sore. I am sick of trying to determine whether its an "outside" pain or an "internal" pain....its just a pain. It's not terrible but to be honest I dont know what is normal anymore. You can get so fixated on this pain in the butt that you lose the plot.

SO here's my new experiment. I am going to do the "boy thing" and ignore this for a while and see what happens. I will let you all know how it progresses. Hopefully I can work through this as nothing else has worked.

The specialist has now found 2 internal hemms that he wants to band (yeah right). I would advise everyone to think very carefully before having this operation. Try EVERYTHING else first.

Cheers

Patch

Well I have been debating having this done for about 4 months now. After reading this site, needless to say I was not confident about my idea of moving forward. However as most on this site know, the hassle of creams, bleeding, and thrombosed after thrombosed will lead to some tough thought process. I told myself that I was going to post here so that others can follow my progress. I had one huge external and internal removed this past Friday the 25th. Actual surgery was nothing. Remember being wheeled into OR then waking up in Recovery. Time in at 8AM and out at 10:30 on way home. Took one percocet in car on way home, slept for about 3 hours. Took 1 percocet every 4 hours until bed (total of 3) Then thought hey take 2 like it said I could so I would be sure to sleep. (freak out is more like it.) one is fine I quickly discover. So day 1 is over and feeling ok. Day 2 stick to advil only and lay around. I do walk around the house outside 3 times to get air and not stay still. Took 1 percocet at 3AM and that was it. Sunday is first BM Not bad. Been taking colace 3x a day and nothing extreme fiber wise, just wheat chex, bannana, and whole wheat english muffin. Really not bad and no blood. Went all day Sat with only advil. Took 1 10mg of Lortab that I had left over last night (not as strong as percoet) Today is Monday and feeling more pain than yesterday. Only really one spot that hurts but if you stretch the muscle or it touches anything you know it. Still only Advil though. This AM had to have BM but felt constipated. More painful than yesterday and was worried about constipation. Guzzled a bottled water and then had another BM. This hurt intitially but once you get started it was ok. No blood in bowl or tissue. I am more sore than yesterday, but not in agony. If people find this helpful I will continue to post. I am able to work from home this week, if I can, so I am fortunate there. Work is very understanding. On that front anyone who has this, you can go on short term disabiltiy if you miss more than 5 days and that is with pay as long as you are not hourly or working for say a "mom and pop" operation. I do not get all the concern on that front. To others that hurt, I do not mean to say that you do not or that you have not had problems. I hope and pray that I continue to do ok and wish you the best. I just wanted to post my experience be it good or bad so that others can decide. Bottom line for me is that it is too soon for me to say thumbs up or down, but I do know that I am not experiencing the pain that others reference. I only had two done so take that for what it is worth. To everyone best of luck, and if it helps, remember our service members who serve with pride and have died with pride. I am sure that they would trade places with us. Best to all........New Guy
