Thanks new guy. I am thinking of getting the surgery done due to bleeding...even after banding. I get the idea of how the recovery is like from most the posts here. Yours is really encouraging. I hope you can keep us posted on how you progress to help some of us making the decision.
Well today makes day the 3rd full day of recovery. Have backed the Advil down to 2 200mg pills every 8 hours so nothing much really. BM are the same. Some pain at first but nothing to scream about. I do find the need to hit the tub afterwards as cleaning even with wipes of any kind is difficult. Also some minor diarrhea this am but again not bad pain just another trip to the tub. There is a fine line between soft stools and diarrhea I suppose. Still hurts to sit even on the softest of leather chairs/sofas so mostly just lay on my side or back. Have found that the blood/pus drainage is also decreasing each day. Have call into colo rectal surgeon to see about a topical anesthetic cream for one area that is more sore than others. Again not saying others are not in pain, and pain is a very individual thing, but so far not as bad as others have articulated. Also find that the best time is the afternoon as I have been able to take 30 minute walks (ok maybe more like waddles) but feels good to get outside and move around. For those who are contemplating I hope this helps. For the record I also had a banding done previously and that is what created the huge thrombosed one that brought me to where I am today. Later.................
Ok so day 4 post op. All is ok. Still Advil although only 1 time last night. Must have rolled over in my sleep because qucikly woke up but Advil calmed it down in 15 minutes or so. BM this AM was lest painful to date although did have some blood on wipes that have not had before. Still have minor blood/pus discharge that requires gauze three or four times a day. Have really just laid around and worked via phone and wireless. Sitting still not fun for really any length of time, but I deinately feel less sore down there. Was told by MD that could use some numbing cream with a topical type painkiller but after my wife got it, I really have not needed to use it. Hope this helps those who are contemplating. Starting to really get "cabin fever" now.
Hi all,
I am glad that there is this forum, and that all of you are so open.
I have had large external hemorrhoids since giving birth to my 21 year old. A few weeks ago I reached the threshold of pain that I was able to tolerate. I was sent from Urgent Care to the Hospital since I had a thrombosis. The doctor lanced the hemorrhoid and took out 3 blood clots. He did not sew me up. I went home.
OMG - an hour later I was screaming in pain. The doc told me to take Advil if I had pain. My husband rushed me to the ER where I was crying hysterically from pain. My butt looked like I had a blooming onion sticking out of it! The doc admitted me for 2 days for pain control. That was last Thursday. I am still not back at work.
I went for a follow up visit and all the doc could say was that I was a "mess." The only option for the mess I have is traditional hemorrhoidectomy.
Do any of you know if the pain is the same after the surgery as it was for me with the lancing and removing of blood clots? My doctor said he will admit me for 2 days for pain control and I will be out of work for 6 weeks.
I will follow all of your advice regarding the hot baths with Epsom salts, lidocaine ointment and prescription drugs.
Thanks,
Terri

Saratoga: I can't comment as that I have had a thrombsed or two over time, I rode them out until they decreased in size but they left me with large fibrous masses that were very problamatic. I had one new external and one hemrhoid column removed. Today is my fifth day post op and I have to admit that after a great day 4 I was hoping for better today. While I am far from being in pain, I am more like day 3. Everyone says two steps forward and one step back so I guess this is my first step back, but I really cannot complain compared to what others have experienced. Just have this one nagging spot that is very sore and keeping me from being able to sit for any significant time frame. Bottom line is that if you are a mess, get it fixed. Also get with a colo-rectal surgeon not a general surgeon. (Sounds like you experienced this in the ER the first time) Pain is an individual thing so just get the MD's commitment that he/she will not let you be in pain. There is no reason that anyone should be in pain, only MD's that are not willing to listen or patients that are afraid to be a little forceful with the MD. I do beleive though that we all have the responsibility to try to discover what our level of "I give up is" That sets the bench mark as to better or worse. If we are too quick to say ouch than we will never really know if I am worse or better. Also when I do beign to hurt I find that walking out side for 15 minutes or so helps. Actually drove to the grocery today for a quick 30 minutes trip and have to say that it was good therapy just to get out. Best of luck and let us know how it goes. Sorry if I came across as "pontificating" but I have spend my professional carreer in dealing with MD's and I see the difference in repsonce from a MD, that a polite, yet commited patient recieves.
Well it has now been 11 days since my surgery. Things have been going fairly well. I actually golfed 18 holes on day 7. Medicine is just an occasional 2 Advil at night. Have not really been able to sit down for any extended period of time until the last 2 days or so. Funny standing and walking feel the best. The last couple of mornings however, my bowel movements have been fairly painful. I have been having some itching, and the one spot that seemed sore before feels like it is being ripped open and just burns like hell when going. One day had some blood but the others I have not. Also still have to use gauze down there and have noticed that there appears to me more of a pus appearance than blood. Anyway called MD and have appt tommorrow to check this out and make sure this is "normal healing" and not some damn fissure of infection. Have to say that my surgeon's office has been great. Always there to answer a question or just for reassurnace. Overall I am ok not in pain, but I am becoming furstrated that this is not done yet. I know that compared to others I am not near as bad, but for me the mental fatique is setting in. Hopefully good news tommorow. Saratoga.....hope all went well. To others hope this helps

Had an appointment today with CRS and he basically said that what all I am experiencing is normal healing. Said that he was suprised how well I was doing given what he had done. He originally told me to expect one week but today stated that he had done more removal than we had discussed (judgement call). Said that I would be 100% in 10 days. It has now been 12 I think. So to those of you who had more extensive hang in there. He was surprised also that I only had 1 day of pain killer and golfed. Said pain is an individual thing just like personalities. He said to try doing what ever I want that if it hurts stop but to rest assured that at this point I would not cause any damage. I will check back from time to time and I hope that everyone does or is doing fine. Kinda of feel like I am part of an honored fratenity. Best to all. Hope my experience has helped.

Had the surgery on Tuesday. They had me do a prep like you would for a colonoscopy so I wouldn't have to use the bathroom right away while healing. I was put under using conscious sedation - versed and something else. After that was administered I was given a "saddle block" so the pain would not wake me. I woke up in no pain, but freaked out that my legs and lower extremeties were paralyzed and as hard as I tried to move my toes I could not. They sedated me until it wore off. The surgeon packed me with a gel that dissolved on it's own, so no gauze was used. I was given oral and strong meds when I pressed on a button to give me meds. I was relatively pain free - just a little uncomfortable. The second day I designed my own routine. Every time I had to use the bathroom I walked the hallway, used the toilet, then the sitz bath. Since I go once every 3o minutes, I had a lot of walking in. My neighbor was 100 and snored, so the hospital gave me ear plugs and a mask to go over my eyes. That did the trick. I am now home for the second night. I have been delaying taking the pain meds, and use them when in pain. The span of time is lengthening. My little dog won't leave my side. I wouldn't say this was the worst surgery I have had, but I can see how this could be if your doctor does not care for your pain like my doctor has. He has been very concerned about pain and has done everything humanly possible to not let me have much. I would say I feel like I have 3rd degree burns on my butt. I am hoping to feel well enough to work from home next week. I am anxious to go back to work. I was surprised to find out how much people visiting in the hospital lifted my spirits. I think this message board really helped me. For all those about to have the surgery, make sure you have a doc concerned for your pain level, and take good care of yourself.
Thank you everyone.

I had hemroid surgery about 2 months ago for internal hemroids and still in alot of pain when I have an bm. I guess at least now it fells like hot lava passing through instead of a baby wow. I was warned by the surgen how painfull the recovery would be but did not think it would be this painfull. I am only in pain now when i have a bm but still I dont ever look forward to having a bm. I hope the pain will go away soon but I can see it lasting another month. Does anyone out there having the sam problems????
hows the pain
do you work if so,r u back at work
I had my surgery Wednesday afternoon. 3 internal and 3 external...laser and banding. It is now Friday night....and I'm feeling pretty good. BM's are going now and while a bit of blood, doing ok. I put udder balm on before and after each BM, wipe only with wet wipes, use stool softener and a teaspoon of mineral oil every day. I've stopped with the pain pills and valium and now just using 600-800 mg ibupro. every six hours. 2-3 sitz/warm baths daily and alternate between heat and ice pack...It's really not so bad once you get past the first day and the first bm.
