Hi,
I don't have any real sage advice for dealing with the pain, but for me the pain of the hemorrhoids have affected me for 4 years. I have to lie down after a BM and make sure I don't stand or sit too long and it has controlled my life for a long time. That is what is making the decision to have the surgery easier. I figure I am suffering already so if this could solve the problem then the pain I think I can get through.
I had surgery three weeks ago and am going back tomorrow and may need additional surgery. It has been rough but at least I know that the pain is coming from healing.
I take vicodin and baths and warm wash clothes and sometimes 4 advil and it gives me some time to do things I need around the house and take care of my two children but the recovery is slow.
I don't know how to advise you but my doctor after the 4th visit for banding and help with hemorrhoids asked if I wanted to get rid of the problem since the other treatments aren't working. I said I don't want to be 80 years old and still have my husband driving me to my hemorrhoid appointments!
Have you tried more conservative methods like banding and sclerotherapy?
Another thing that helps me is to pray about it.
I wish you the best in the surgery and have prayed for your speedy recovery.

Hello All, especially frightened in Illinois:
Yes, I do have several positive things to say. I had my surgery on Friday, January 12th and I am glad I did it.
1. I have an excellent Dr. and surgeon in Dr. Harold Friedl, in Kalamazoo Michigan. He has an awesome reputation and nothing but positive comments from friends, family and the medical staff around town. RESEARCH is key!
2. I was admitted for an overnight stay for pain management. I had my surgery at 2:30 pm and did not ask for medication until 2:05 am. I felt I was very well informed. Dr. Friedl told me that I would not be able to drive for 1 week and that it would need approximately 2 weeks off of work. Maybe more.
3. Since I did not ask for pain medication for so long, I thought I might be a special case. Different from all of the other postings. Well, I was well taken care of in the hospital. When I came home, I began to feel my bottom again.
4. I am taking Vicadin 1-2 pills as needed every three hours and 800 mg of Motrin every 6 hrs. I am now taking both drugs. I have been sitting at the computer for about an hour and am not in pain.
It's almost 2:00 am and I can't sleep. I guess when you lay around all day sleeping on and off, it's hard to sleep at night. Ha, Ha. I knew I would find some comfort from this on-line group. I actually laughed at some of the expressions given. Even though it's not funny, it felt good to laugh.
We have a water pick shower head and it's awesome. It came in handy when I had my kids and it's been a life saver now. I take 3-6 mini showers daily. I make the water as hot as I can stand it and put the shower head close to my incisions. I had three external hemrroids removed and I am not sure how many internal ones removed.
This forum has been a real life saver to me. People will talk about sex, money, all other surgeries, but the exit ramp of life is just not discussed. It can feel really humilating and shameful at times.
I am not bleeding very much and can function a little. I still get tired and naucous. I am VERY apprehensive about my bowel movements. So far, I have been keeping my stools soft with ex-lax and stool softners, lots of prune juice, pop, and high fiber bread.
I am in great fear and much pain when nature is taking it's course. Thank you to the man who said he would throw up some times. I always make sure to take my vomit bowl with me to the bathroom. I haven't had to use it yet, but have come close.
To everyone out there and scared in Illinois, it's going to be O.K. Your rectum is a part of your body that needs attention and care as well. If you do not have the surgery, things will get worse for you when you have no other choice but to have surgery.
I've been there as well. I've put off having surgery for almost 8 yrs because I am a stay at home mom with babies to care for. When and if your hemrroids become thrombosed (filled with blood), turn purple and have bumps on them you will be in HELL!
This happened to me during my second pregnancy. My hemrroids from my first pregnancy became thrombosed. The bumps on the hemrroids are blood clots. I had to go to immediate care and have them lanced and I had 15 little clots removed.
Needless to say, when I returned home, I had to have a big, fat, normal BM. It was not pretty.
Illinois, my heart goes out to you and all of the other people who were brave and kind enough to share your stories. To the new mom, I wish I could drop a meal off and help you with your babies.
Take care, the pain is manageable...(so far) and carry on! I am 2 days post surgery and I will check back in a couple days. To Wheaton Illinois, please write when you can. I'd like to hear how your surgery went. I hope you went through with it. It is worth it.
Sincerely,
Kalamazoo

After giving birth 6 months ago I developed hemmorhoids. I have been having lots of pain and bleeding. The doctor did a flexible sigmondoscopy and than the Infrared treatment to burn the hemmorhoid tissue. it has been 3 days and I still feel the bumps and I still bleed and have more pain than before. He didnt give me any time off from work and said that you can work but I took off a week. Now I am considering going for hemmorhoidectomy because the problem has been ongoing for the past 6 months and it has made my life very difficult. I cannot lift or play with my baby, sex is a challenge, its hard to concentrate at work, the pain and bleeding during bowl movements, I am just so tired of it all. Now taht I have read all these posts it seems that you guys regret doing a hemmorhoidectomy. What is your advice for me.... is it all worth it now or what?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone can give my some advice. I had a hemorrhoidectomy about a month ago and have now developed a fissure. The doctor has given me some ointment to increase blood flow to the region to try for a month and if that does not work he is recommending a lateral sphincteromy.
Has anyone ever dealt with not healing well and getting a fissure afterwards? He didn't use stitches and now I am wondering if he should have? I have another appointment on Thursday but I am in so much pain.
How much pain medicine were you all using after a month? I am on 4 advil twice a day and 2 vicodin a day and still in pain. I don't want to overdo the pain meds because I am scared they will stop working if I keep on them too long and I will be in some serious pain if they need to do surgery.
It is so hard to have these bottom problems. Noone really wants to acknowledge how much pain you are in because it is hard to understand unless you have had them. I wish more colo-rectal surgeons had this problem so they too could be more empathetic.
Thanks for any info you can provide!

Hi,
I developed hemorrhoids at the end of my second pregnancy that were so painful! They didn't go away after the birth and I had so many treatments to try to get rid of them and they just kept coming back. I had hemorrhoid surgery a month ago and am now dealing with the incision not healing and am still in a lot of pain.
I do think that it is probably worth it to get the problem taken care of especially if it is ruining your life in so many ways. I think you could still be swollen from the treatment you just had though so you might want to give it a little more time.
It is so hard to find a doctor who can understand the pain this causes. I have seen 6 different color-rectal doctors for this and some pudendal nerve damage I suffered during the delivery.
Did the pain start when the hemorrhoids developed? Pain can also be caused by a rectal muscle spasm, fissures, neuralgia, pain that is being referred from your tailbone.
It is so hard being in pain and a new mom-I feel for you! Don't give up pursuing the cause of the pain and if it means having surgery I figure if I am going to be in pain anyway I might as well be in pain from getting better.
Best wishes

Thank goodness I found this site. It is 4am and I have not slept in over 24 hours.
I had an emergency operation Tuesday last week fro 3 very large, thrombosed inernal hemorrhoids that had prolapsed and I have been in a desperate state ever since. My mother had this operation 30 years ago and they really botched it.
She has been in cronic pain for all this time and only now are the best specialists admitting that there might have been some over zealous cutting going on back then and they unfortunately have destroyed nerves from which she wont recover so you can understand why I was not a fan of the operation. But by last tuesday I could not walk or function (funnny that, its now next tuesday and I still cant walk or function).
I am an entertainer and before the surgery I asked the doctor if I would be able to do thursday, Friday and Sunday's shows?...."which week or which month was his reply"...... when I woke up in recovery I did not feel too bad but a few hours later I understood him totally.
I was in hospital for 1 day and night came home with the instructions as you all seem to have. Once the hospital medications wore off I became very distressed but soon got to a medication regime that seems to work. I also breath through the pain (self hypnosis) as I was taught to when I was young. I had been shot when 12 and lost one eye. Unfornunateely they did not remove the eye totally for 28 years and I was in constant pain all that time.
Back to the immediate situation.
I just take paracetamol because the codiene based pain relief apparently causes constipation and we dont want that DO WE....NOOOOOO!!!!
I need to be fairly graphic here because this is what is bothering me the most.
I have this constant (???) "ooze" discharge. It is quite thick and looks like mucous I guess. In the morning with empty bowel it is almost colourless with a background of watery blood. as the day progresses it gets more brown (poohey) (is that a word?). I take agarol as a laxative and normacol (looks like birdseed).
Now the big problem..... I was told not to strain during BM under any circumstances. So normally by late afternoon or early evening I get the warning signs and go stand over the toilet bowl (to try and slow things down a bit). Somewhere from my abdominal area comes this involintary spasm and out comes the BM with such force that it is overwhelming. I have tried "breathing" through this and even working against it but it does not matter, I just cant control it.
Thank god for my fiancee. she has taken time off work and has been amazing (boys are wussys, even tough Aussie ones). This BM is over in a matter of seconds and as bad and debilitating as it is once it is over I lie in a bath for a while and back to bed. there is bleeding with the BM and after a short while I am back to the constant discharge again and my day starts over. I am worried about this discharge I must admit. Have you guys experienced anything like this?
I cant imagine how any of you carry on your normal lives in this recovery time.
As well as being an entertainer I own a trading company (based in Asia). I thought I was tough enough for anything but I have cancelled all trips overseas in the imediate future until I see how long it will be before I can sit on Planes etc for extended periods.
If this problem is just a side effect of many pregnacies I can absolutely guarantee that if men had to have babies there would be no babies.....
Cheers and love to you all

Hey Graham,
Glad you found the board too! It doesn't ease the physical pain but at least you can come here and see that you are not alone!
I can answer some of your questions I think since I have had some similar experiences and am still recovering. On top of the hemorrhoid surgery I now have a fissure where it isn't healing well so I have injury upon injury.
I was so suprised too that people expect you to carry on after surgery and give such unrealistic goals for recovery. When I went in for a checkup last week the doctor said, "just take two aleve and when you get back from work take a bath." I am like Hello? I can't even sit to drive, I can't sit at work..(fortunately I can work from home with a laptop on my bed), I have two kids to take care of and am in pain big time! Of course I understand they don't want to overmedicate because much of the medicines can be constipating but you don't want to be in so much pain that you start to feel desperate!
I too had that discharge that you are talking about. That is normal and is part of the healing process. I know guys don't wear pantyliners but it is kind of like having period (how fun!) That will get better though. I think I had this for several weeks.
The strong urge you have to go to the bathroom when you are ready I think are muscle spasms in your rectum. It is from the surgery and your muscles are spasmising from the surgery. That should get better too. The warm baths are supposed to help relax the rectum. My doctor also gave me a beta blocker in cream form to put down there 4 times a day to help with that. I know some doctors will prescribe low doses of valium you can take too.
I am not familiar with the medicine you are taking for pain but will check them out and see if it is something I could try. I also use lidocaine ointment too to help numb the area.
Before I got hemorrhoids I never knew just how awful it could be. Noone ever mentioned them except maybe while joking about Preparation H cream! I am sorry to hear about you mom's botched surgery. How is her quality of life? Is she able to get some relief?
You will get better-it is like watching grass grow because it is such a hard area to heal but it will come. I just wish doctors would be more sympathetic and realistic about the healing. I need to find one who has been through it for that to happen I think!
Hang in there,

HI Lecia,
Thanks for the input and advice, it has been a great help. Yes, you do feel all alone with this particular pain.
Part of my job in my trading and consulltancy business is getting to the bottom (no pun intended) of a deal or situation really quickly and I have been trying to apply some of these principles in analysing this whole post op recovery and pain management scenerio. Luckily I dont have to get up and go to work (self employed), I have a VERY understanding specialist doctor, have love and support here with the most amazing woman in the universe so I am in good shape I guess.
I am going to put a document together once this is all over with a "blow by blow" description that might be helpful to others but right now I am just making notes and trying different approaches which has luckily helped me get through this with at least some degree of comfort.
The salt bats are the number 1 relief for me. I also bought one of those gentle babyshower attachments for spraying directly onto the area snd that has been amazing.
Controlled breathing (almost meditative state) while having BM's has taken most of the pain away during BM, then straight into the salt bath.
Keeping the laxatives (mostly natural) up is also having a very good result.
I am now going into day 10 of recovery and late yesterday afternoon I said to my partner that we should do some business stuff tomorrow. Last night I had a BM that went very wrong and put me back to feeling like it was day 1 all over again. I had decided to back off the prunes and pear juice combined with another laxative. Big mistake, it was way too early for that. These things can put you back but you do learn the lesson quickly and well.....hahahahahha
I am developing a theory about the recovery period and it is obvious to me that our recovery is probably affected more by the quality of care we can afford to give ourselves more than any other factor.
I know the medical system in the US is expensive (and getting like that here as well). What are the costs of this operation and post op care for the US. It would be interesting to know. We have an interest in a resort in Malaysia and the medical care there is exceptional. I am going to investigate putting a medical tour/resort recovery package together and see just how much I could save here, not sure about the US as it is a long way from Asia.
Talk to you soon
Graham

Hi All,
I had a surgery two weeks ago today. Here is my story.
I am just starting to 'feel' normal again. My bathroom habits are in no way back to normal. I've been two days without pain medication now, but am on advil (800 mgs) twice per day.
I have been taking magnesium. This was recommended to me by the nurse in the recovery room at the hospital. It's very good for you and it is also a stool softner. I also take two senekot's every night. So, I take three magnesium pills and two senekot's each night.
My stools are pretty soft and very small in the morning. Like little fish (sorry about all the detail.) just want to make sure that this is normal.
I've been having difficulty with urination. I sometimes have to go into the shower to urinate if my bottom is really hurting. I cannot relax enough to go. It eases up once the pain medication or advil has taken effect, but it's so inconvenient.
I have been out work for two weeks and will be returning to the office on Monday. I may only work a half day. I've been out the past three days walking the dog. It takes alot out of me, but I have to get out.
I feel as though my bathroom habits will never get back to normal. I am hoping I can get to a point of sitting on the toilet and not have to push. My rectum seems to be in spasm.
Does anyone else have this problem? Even after I have a BM, I still feel as though I have to go. Also, has anyone had the urination issues?
My sister had this done at Thanksgiving. Never had to take a pain pill and was recovered in 4 days. That's why I had this surgery!!! My dr said she that this was not normal.
Good luck to all and thank goodness for this site. By the way, I too have skin tags (two weeks post op.) The dr said that we could look at these in six months or so. Didn't really know what she meant, but now I do after reading all the posts.
Best of luck to everyone. I hope to say in a few weeks that I would definitely have this surgery again. I have two friends who have had it that say that they would in a minute......

Hi all,
Its good to see that we all basically have the same experience but with varying degrees of discomfort. Yes Thomas, recovery almost kreeps up on you. I had a setback a coupple of days ago (see above) but really made strides today.
Cal girl, the rectum spasm thing worried me greatly. My specialist prescribed some Mintec capsules. They are natural and contain peppermint oil basically. Thet are marketed here for Irritable bBowel Syndrome and they work a treat. That feeling of something still there I also have and its an accurate feeling I think.
About 1 hour after a BM I normally wash the area and have a soak in a salt bath. Most times that relaxes the muscles and combined with my bodies naturall "healing ooze it ejects any small lingering poo.
What an operation this is. Just thnk that it is so dramatic that we easily talk about these things to strangers accross the world in an open forum.....go figure.
I am still nterested in peoples costs for their operation for my research.
Cheers All

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to answer the poster's question about having spasms and problems urinating. I too have problems urinating at times. I feel like I can't relax. It seems to help if I just go in the shower. It is getting better but I can understand what you are going through. Just make sure you mention it to your doctor if you can't void at all. Sometimes this is a complication with the surgery.
Graham, I think that would be great to do some kind of diary for people who are just going through it. I know reading how others are coping and healing has helped mentally through this all! I don't know how much the cost is yet. I have insurance that pays 80% of it after my $300 yearly deductible. I am sure with the complications it will be more since I have needed more doctor appointments and follow up.
I am still bleeding with BMs but that is because I got a fissure because the wound wasn't healing well. The doctor said that 30% can get this kind of complication so my healing has been very prolonged. I still can't sit very well and avoid moving too much because it irritates the fissure.
Keep taking those baths to help relax the muscles down there. I know some doctors will prescribe small doses of valium to help with that or a cream that helps things relax.
You guys take care,
Lecia

Hi all,
I posted here back in the fall when I was having trouble healing from my hemorrhoid surgery. Well, I am still having problems and I had my surgery over 4 months ago. I now have a fissure that I have been trying to heal for the past 2 months. EVERY DAY I wish that I could go back and not have that stupid hemorrhoid surgery. Living with the pain and discomfort from my hemorrhoids is NOTHING compared to the pain I have now.
I am writing to you all now because I noticed that some people here are discussing having spasms after there surgeries. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very careful if you have spasms. You are VERY susceptible to acquiring a FISSURE because your rectal area is in spasm. A FISSURE is 10,000 times worse than the worst hemorrhoid. It is like having a paper cut in your rectal area. Please seek out your doctor immediately if you think that you have a part of your rectal area in spasm. TELL your doctor that you DON'T want to get a fissure. Find out what he can do for you. If you acquire a fissure it is very hard to heal and the tissue down there will never EVER be as strong again.
I pray that you all heal quickly.

I spoke to my specialist about the urinating issue. He tells me that the body shares the same nerves for signaling urination as poo and can get very confused when we have these sorts of operations. Luckily its temporary, just dont give yourself a mental issue with it or the old "get what you fear" syndrome might kick in.
I am going to write to the manufacturer and complain about sharing one set of circuits for two jobs. this is unnaceptable in this day and age and we demand seperate circuits in the next model upgrade.... hahahahhaa..
The fissure issue I can only imagine and I do feel for you.
Things are improving here day by day. Again, I can afford to lay around and I have a great support team, If I had to function "normally" during this recovery time I really do not know how I would cope, and this comes from one who has far more than his share of pain through his life.
Keep well all, I will report back as thingd progress

Hi everyone and especially Momto3cuties,
I totally know what you are going through! I had hemorrhoid surgery and then got a fissure from it. You are right the pain is worse than hemorrhoids! It is awful but I really didn't have much of a choice with getting the surgery because after dealing with them 4 years it got so bad I couldn't even walk normally.
What is your doctor suggesting to promote healing? I take 3 baths a day and use a cream that is supposed to help relax the sphincter muscle to promote healing. I have about 6 more weeks of watching and waiting before we discuss surgery. Is that an option for you?
You guys hang in there and prayers for you all,
Lecia
