Prolly a mutt.
You have to consider that good running dogs might also be breeds that need a lot of exercise. A LOT or they get destructive. (Like our Airedales or Border Collies) People I know run with Labrador Retrievers and love it. Those are great dogs--can be active and can also settle down when you do.
Mutts might be able to incorporate the best of its mixed heritage. Whatever you get, work it up slowly, like you would a child. And if it's a puppy, it shouldn't run on concrete too much before 9 mos to a year. Sorry, prolly too much info.
You can borrow my dog--I can't run him near what he wants to run!!

The same exact dog that currently lives here (I'd say I owned her but that would be stretching the truth). I can't post a pic because my scanner is not working but she is sierrbearra on PH's profile site... She is a pound dog - part border collie, part Australian shepherd, and part chow. She has the temperment and activity level of a border collie which makes her an ideal running companion, especially in cooler weather; she's been up to 15 miles before (with water breaks, obviously). I didn't run her until her vet gave me the OK. Medium size mutt mixes with some sort of herding breed seem to make the best running buds. Larger breeds (not all, but many) are often prone to hip dysplasia issues. Go to the pound and check some out!! See if one will run a bit with you in the hall or out in the dog run after you make it's acquaintance (I mean chase in a friendly manner, obviously!). What kind do you want?
