There are many superfoods powerful enough to lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and save you money. There are no side effects and they put you in a better mood. Most of these superfoods are not expensive and exotic.

In recent times, more and more people have started to "worship at the alter of superfoods" — foods packed with special health benefits that boost your general health and lower your risk of developing certain diseases. Of course, you won't reap the rewards if you just chew into these foods once or twice; that would require eating them regularly. Unfortunately, many famous superfoods, ranging from chia seeds to cacao nibs, come with a hefty price tag.

What if you want to be healthy without spending too much? Then, remember that "superfoods" are just ordinary foods that have usually high levels of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial substances like antioxidants. Not all of them are so expensive that you can only buy them as an occasional treat. What do you need to know?

Fruits and Veggie Superfoods

Kale

There are not many other foods that can compete with kale. It is full of vitamins, minerals, and health-enhancing antioxidants. A few of these are B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin C. Kale is filling because it is loaded with fiber and it helps build bone mass because of its calcium content. Heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids are present, as well, and they help the body with a natural detox method to get rid of harmful compounds that cause cancer and other serious illnesses. One of the best things about kale is it puts you in a better mood by relieving depression.

Kale is easy to prepare. You can remove the center ribs of its leaves and slice it into thin ribbons. You can add it to soups and stews during the last 20 minutes of cooking or simply sauté it with olive oil to serve it as a side dish.

The best thing about kale is its cost. You can buy it for around 60 cents a cup! Don't fall into the trap of buying those hipster kale chips. Prepare them in your own kitchen, instead.

Sweet Potatoes

This vegetable neutralizes wrinkles and sun spots and helps generate new, healthy glowing skin cells. Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta carotene, a healthy antioxidant that also promotes good insight. They are sweet, savory and a good winter staple. They are also packed with energizing B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C, and fiber.

You can bake them whole or mash them with milk. Kids love to eat them as fries, so simply slice them up and lay them on a baking pan.

Most stores sell these for around 40 cents each.

Pinto Beans

These little fellows are loaded with figure-friendly protein and energizing B vitamins. They are a great budget food because they have fiber as well as heart-healthy antioxidants.

You can add them to chili or serve them as a side dish.

Many people enjoy them because they are a mere 13 cents per cup.

Dried Cranberries

Dried cranberries have serious healing power and have a high content of antioxidants. This means that they can reduce cancer and heart disease. One of their unique compounds has been noted to prevent urinary tract infections, relieve painful urination, and help with pre-menstrual bloating.

This superfood is a complete source of protein and is budget-friendly at $1.00 a pound.

Oatmeal

This is a top source food that has immune-boosting zinc, blood-building iron, and many protective antioxidants known as flavonoids. These things allow for reduction in disease-causing inflammation in the body. This is an inexpensive way to fill your stomach and get soluble-fiber in your diet. What’s best is that it helps remove cholesterol and keep blood sugar from rising too quickly. Oatmeal can be purchased in single packages or multi-serving boxes. It is extremely reasonable in price.

Many nutritionists believe that most of the suffering in the world today could be eliminated if people would change the way they eat. They could say goodbye to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension simply by eating some of these superfoods discussed in this article. The good thing is, you don’t need to eat specific foods for particular ailments, just eat better.
