I also have extremely itchy gums in episodes around 4 times a year. It is absolutely awful, when it happens i cant think of anything else or concentrate on anything. The affected area (always just my lower front teeth) is quite crowded with teeth, there is a normal amount but they are quite close together and so after reading the earlier post perhaps this is the cause?
I havent found anything that works. I honestly want to pull out the teeth its as if im allergic to teeth!

I'm a guy who has this simular problem. Its not a severe as some of the other posters addressed. But the space between tooth 23 and 24 iches so much. As far as I can remember I would have that itch and the only way I can realy remidey it is by taking some floss and to just keep flossing the same spot over and over. It hurts a little and bleeds but feels so satisfying. I just had my teeth cleaned and the dental hygenist said that removing the built up plaque should make it better. I just wanted her to keep cleaning that spot over and over. I realy don't have any suggestions other than flossing. I was googling to see if there were any suggestions on how to remedy this and found limited results simular to mine other than this forum; figured I would post to get my two cents out there.

Something interesting I heard in another post was their densit told them the spot where the teeth met near the gum line had a larger gap than where the teeth met at the top. This is the exact issue I have with the spot between 23 and 24. When I was 8 I had bracess for a few years. Most of my teeth are stright but tooth 24 is slightly over laping 23 and is turned counterclockwise a little. This has caused a space where the gum line is. I'm wondering cause there is more room there is a much more consistant and higher risk for something to get in there to cause problems. Anyone else notice there tooth roots having extra space between teeth?

I recently have had this problem.
It only comes up sometimes, and when I ask people "have you ever felt like your gums are really itchy" they look at me like im stupid.
It only comes up on one tooth, and when its itchy I itch it to the point it bleeds and it hurts.
I told my dentist about this, as I havent seen him latley.
I wish I knew the cause.

Wow I am not alone! I have had Itchy gums since I was 6. When I brush it doesn't help! I also have poked my gums with toothpicks until it bleeds but it only itches about a week every a month. The itch is constant and my dentist and mom have no clue what it is. They are currently itching and it is super annoying. Nothing triggers my itching it is just random. It goes away when I'm distracted. The itchy gums are below the two front-bottom teeth. I feel like this: >;) >:( :'( :-( ! ! ! o.O

I'll apologize ahead of time for not reading through the 5 pages

I just wanted to post to ask if anyone has looked into an allergy to toothpaste? Specifically the ingrediant in toothpaste that makes it foam, SLS (or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)? SLS isn't necessary in toothpastes and some people do have allergies to it. With me it causes canker sores to form. It can create microscopic damage to the tissue in your mouth which can then lead to irritation, and in cases like mine, lead to canker sores. I don't have the itching but I just wanted to put my two cents in, in case that could be the cause of some or all of your guys' problems?

You can buy toothpaste without SLS, and see if it alleviates the itching. It's not typically available in regular stores so you may have to search for "sls-free toothpaste", or ask your dentist if they know where to buy it.

Hope that helps someone!

I THINK I HAVE FOUND AN ANSWER AFTER 44 YEARS!I am the one who had the awesome dentist who was willing to hack away at my gums a few months ago (despite the pain, it was heavenly!!!!) Anyway, yesterday we used one of his tools (it has a pointed end that is longer than the one used when they scrape your teeth) and I held my thumb up (in a thumbs-down position) so my thumb represented my tooth sticking down into my gum. Then, as the dentist slid the needle end of the tool into my gum, alongside my tooth, I would slide a finger along my thumb to match the movement of the dentist's needle-tool. I would slide my finger along my thumb to direct him where to move the needle-tool. We did this until we reached "THE SPOT" where I got maximum itch relief. Ya'll...after 44 years of this...I always thought the itch was BETWEEN my bottom 2 front teeth. I have ripped those gums apart with dental floss, poked holes in the gums with pins/pens/paper clips/earrings or any pointy object, and I have stuck my fingernails/drivers license/credit cards/the plastic things that hold a price tag onto a piece of clothing between those 2 teeth until I actually cracked one of the teeth (because stretching the teeth apart gave me great itch relief). Up until now, those things gave me the maximum relief. HOWEVER....I have discovered that if I probe underneath ONE of those teeth, I can find one microscopic little tiny spot that is literally dead center underneath JUST ONE OF THE TEETH (you almost have to scoop the pin under the roots of the tooth and come back up into the middle...like going in a "J" shape to come up into the tooth. When we get to that spot...HOLY MACKEREL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is like no other pain/relief I have ever felt. It is definitely the source of the itch. My dentist repeated this several times from different areas of entry and it always led back to this same spot. He says it is a specific nerve that is underneath that tooth. He says that one option is to go in and sever the nerve, but that he wants to first do some research. One thing he is consulting with some surgeons on is using BOTOX to inject in there. He says he knows that paralyzes...but he is not sure about whether or not it can block nerve sensation (he used more specific terminology, but this is my best attempt to explain it). So we are supposed to chat after he gets some information about Botox as a possibility and if not, he is going to discuss options for destroying this nerve. So right now I am sitting here with a sewing needle that I have swivelled around until I have reached "THE SPOT". It is extremely tempting to just shove the pin through it and end this misery myself right now, but as you all know, despite the intense relief, there is also pain involved with mangling the spot and I just haven't been brave enough to jam the needle all the way in. The dentist noted that the regular tooth scraper is not long enough to reach this spot. So if any of you have a dentist who is willing to try this location process...tell your dentist to use the tool that has the really long needle-like end (or use a sewing needle to do it yourself). PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE TRIES THIS AND DISCOVERS IT TO BE THE SAME RESULT FOR YOU!!! I'll let you all know when I hear back from my dentist!

As I sit here just about ready to extract my own teeth, I don't have an answer and have tried just about everything.

Thank you for the “support group”… =-}

I’ve read ALL of the posts and here’s my list: I'm female, not taking birth control, allergic to many things so have post nasal drip, do have an irregular heartbeat and have had gums that itch in a specific location on and off since I was about 12.

There must be an answer out there… but until then my preferred method of torture is to take dental floss and KNOT it, then run it between the offending teeth... this only provides satisfaction for as long as you do it, but it feels SO GOOD at the time and doesn’t cause quite as much damage as other "remedies"...

Ok...I'm the one with the dentist who is going out of his way to figure out what this thing is. Apparently Botox will not work because it paralyzes movement, but does not kill sensation. My dentist has spoken with some other specialists and they are going to try going in to the nerves underneath my tooth and using a laser to zap the spot that seems to be causing the problem. He said it definitely seems to be a nerve gone haywire, but that if he went in and killed the nerves in that area, it would numb the whole lower jaw on that side permanently, like when you have Novacaine. I'm anxiously awaiting the laser and will let you know what happens.

Hi - to the guy that has been struggling this 44 years or anyone else. I notice that one of my teeth near here moves a little and when it moves it also helps a little with the itchy feeling. like when i can get it to move and it makes a little sound it feels sooooooo good. i wish i could figure out where this is coming from. like the whole area feels itchy but it would be good to be able to find the exact spot so i stop wiggling this one tooth. i feel like a weirdo. this is also worse during quiet times not during activity. anyone else having the tooth wiggling thing. also this itchy feeling - is sort of one of those hurt good feelings. someone told me its a way to get "present" and be in the here and now. and that part of the reason to do it is to escape a bit from boredom. who knows

My bottom lower front gum has been driving me crazy for as long as I can remember with an itch that can't be scratched. I would love to have an answer and solution to this problem.

Thank God I am not alone with this itching in gum were a tooth was extracted 2 yrs ago. Have been to several dentist and specialists. No one can give my an answer. Dentist says gums are healthy and the teeth are healthy. This has been torture for two yrs. It is a front tooth and I haven't been able to fix because of the itching. I have had all kinds of x rays and scan done. Saliva in that area feels thicker too. It has gotten slightly better but at one point I felt like ending it all that how much this itching torture me. Add to the fact that dentist or specialist has not helped. One said it might be a damaged nerve and maybe sever it but no guarantee it would work and it would numb that area. I am learning to live with it but it is misery. One dentist said it was all in my head. I replied it in my head alright my mouth. Hope someone finds a solution in the meantime I am trusting God for healing.

I wonder if anyone here had external root resorption or internal root resorption in any teeth?

Itchyone1970, I'm the one with 44 years of itching... I do find that moving my teeth where the gums itch does seem to "scratch the itch". I used to slide my driver's license between my 2 front bottom teeth because doing this would cause this incredibly painful relief. But eventually I cracked one of my teeth doing that!

I'm still waiting on my dentist to get this laser he has promised to try. The waiting is killing me!

I went to an acupunturist today, to see if he could offer any help. He basically said the spot I am pointing to (below front 2 bottom teeth)is a major acupuncture pressure point and that there is nothing "wrong" with me...it is just an oversensation problem. I KNOW THAT! MAKE THE OVERSENSATION GO AWAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! :-) He let me take one of the acupunture needles and I shoved it down in my gum to the exact spot that itches so much. I could have cried for how much relief it gave me. The acupuncture needle is the first puncture that lets me scratch the itch without the level of pain that needles, toothpicks, and other objects give. UNBELIEVABLE! Thank GOD he let me take a needle home. I'm sitting here typing and looking like a freak with my acupuncture needle sticking out of my mouth. I think I'll leave it in forever!!!!

I also visited a acupuncture dr. He put needles on outside front of lip and on face. That did not work. Maybe I should go again and ask for a needle and so I can stick in the gum myself too. I can't believe I am talking like this. I am glad I got support group here, cause think we are nuts. How can one explain a itch in gum and nothing to prove what causing it.
