I am 21 years old, and have suffered with Arthritis since I was 14. I have moderate hip damage in my left hip and am going to need something done in the near future.
Has anyone had the hip resurfacing and had children? I didnt even think that having something like a hip resurfacing would affect pregnancy and having children - so this was a massive shock. Before I went to the surgeon, the obvious step for me was a resurfacing and then later a hip replacement, so this is a real spanner in the works.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,im 34 and have arthritis. I had a metal on metal resurface done on my right hip 17 yrs ago when i was only 18. It has now worn through my pelvis and i have had to have a bone graft and a total hip replacement. Its now 5 days on from my op and im feeling ok. I am not to put much weight on my leg for 6 weeeks and not sure what happens next. My husband and i were trying for a baby before this happend but hope we can start to try again soon. If anyone wants to ask me any questions i would love to help. If anyone wants to tell me how they got on with there ops,that would be great. I am 26 years old and have had 3 hip surgeries from hip dysplasia, my last 10 years ago. I have carried 2 babies full term, and my hip gain actaully went away during both pregnancies. I just found out 4 days ago I will need a complete hip replacement, which will happen in the next 3 months. I am very confused and scared over the entire ordeal and surgery. atleast I know Im not alone

I am 38 and have just had a full left hip replacement (4.5 weeks ago). Due to previous surgeries to keep my legs a normal length even with hip displasia, now my bad leg is longer than my good! So my recovery will be very slow. I am not allowed to put any weight on the leg for the first 7 weeks. Well, I can put featherweight which is 50lbs... about the actual weight of the leg so I can rest it on the ground for balance. I use a walker, and crutches, and had very bad anemia coming out of the hospital.
But pain? Nope, no more none nadda. From pain killers for 5 years to nothing but an anti inflamatory (I am still healing after all). Would I recommend one? If your life falls apart due to pain and mobility issues, yes. The very idea of having a child pre-surgery was unthinkable. I was a total cripple, not to mention the plethera of drugs to keep me walking via crutches rather than in a wheelchair. You shouldn't get pregnant on anti-inflamitories.... and if you aren't on those... your joint isn't bad enough for surgery yet.
No idea what you are talking about in terms of ions... and no one has provided a medical link so I'll go hunt that down...

my son is 18 years old and having hip replacement surgery in july on one hip i was wondering about the recovery process and what to expect and if its better to both at one time, we live in florida and kinda wanting to check on different surgeons as well any body know one in the gainesville, palatka, jacksonville area

hey thi is neha here... so glad to hear there a re a lot of people like me.. am 23.. just got married and had hip osteo arthritis for a long time. but its starting to hurt very bad cant walk for too long ,sit or do a lot of activitei wanted to ls the pain is terrible... but my otho Dr. suggested stem cell therapy...its still in experimental stage for hip but its been very successfull for the knee... it will strt aftr a couple of mnths.. am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping against all odds stem cell helps me cure my arthritis.. if not thenyes i will have to think of an hip replacement as an option..

Hi, Don't worry yourself... I'm 45 and went through a hip replacement 5mnths ago..CERAMIC...i am very active and played rugby right upto it became too painful...I am now on the road to full recovery and am looking forward to getting back to full fitness...i have started Crossfit training and am hopefully going to be able to throw a rugby ball again soon..its the best thing that has happened to me for years as for about 4yrs i suffered from back and hip pain and could not really put 100% into my efforts in sport... Look at your hip replacement as any other injury and set yourself goals each month you will get back to full fitness if you want too...your still young with loads to offer yourself and others around you...i feel like i have got a second chance it can be a turning point after going through yrs of pain..As for your Doc trust your instinct.... : ) GOODLUCK

I am a male 33 years of age and was told i would have to have both hips replaced by the age of 18, i am 6 weeks post op on my left hip and cant wait to get my right one completed..... the first 2 weeks sucked i had trouble with my knee i suppose from strain of surgery and couldnt put any pressure on my knee at all but i continued my therapy and that pain did go away about 3 weeks after surgery... my only regret is waiting this long i have had bone on bone since my teenage years and just about waited to long as i did so much damage to my socket.... not sure how long it will last but just having this releif on one leg is worth cant wait for the next onexd

Hi .. I am 33 with two kids one has medical an a single mom .. I know it is ruff but I also struggle from hip problems . My doc said that I would need hip replacement surgery an that my hip is really bad but he also told me that my left hip has a little arthritis in it .. so my right hip I have osteoarthritis .. well he said that I am too young to have hip replacement an that I should wait till I'm at least 50.. because of the fact that you would have to have another hip surgery in 20 years an it will be worse than the first I have talked to him an the other docs that are there .. they have given me a shot in my hip which has helped me out but have to watch it .. my knee gives out on me some times because of my hip but putting a brace helps I'm doing better but also you must watch your weight an exercise too they said that over weight can also cause problems .. I fear this surgery as all others because I have my kids an it's harder .. but also asking all the questions is a plus an research is a must .. I also see a spine an pain doc an him an the other doc is working together on helping me out .. it Is hard on finding a good doctor but keep looking .. Some just want your money an are so eager to poke you ..

I have had a similar issue to most people on here, but I feel closest to you story, except my sport of choice is baskeball. I read all over the place that after a THR most doctors say to avoid all types of impact activities like basketball and long distance running, and of course I'm sure rugby is on that list. After your THR did the doctor advise against heavy lifting like Crossfit or impact sports like Rugby? If so why have you decided to do these anyway? I would like to know because I want to start basketball as soon as I am cleared to. I look forward to hearing your reply, or anyone else that has some advice on this...

I am curious what your outcome was after your THR. I am 39 and was involved in a serious auto accident which resulted in a crushed pelvis and hip on my right side. This was 13 months ago and life has been very difficult due to the recovery of nearly 50 fractures and the many surgeries since then. I am most concerned about the hip because it is the make it or break it on my mobility from here forward and it took several doctors before we could find on willing to do the complicated surgery.
