I am 13 and just started experiencing this pain from my belly button to my pelvis region. I told my mom this and she said that it was from lifting weights and my dad said that it could be a hernia. My mom had kidney stones before and immediately shot down that idea. After my lacrosse game i experienced a sharp pain in my rectal are and could barely walk, on the other hand i got that same pain when i was playing on my XBox 360. I looked this up on Web MD and had no luck. Puttin my knees up does help eleviate this pain.

The Urachus is a tube that was a connection from the umbilicus to the bladder, which after birth becomes a ligament, like some others said. So there is a connection from the belly button to the penis/urethra, through the bladder.
People have posted many reasons for this pain, which I have also had. I think all of these causes are correct, as the main problem is the ligament has shortened, which can be caused by many reasons.
Pure dehydration will cause all the ligaments in your body to tighten up, have you ever noticed other muscles feel tighter when this pain is going on?
Caffiene causes dehydration, so see above. Especially if you only drink caffeine drinks for an extended time.
Heavy exercise and lack of proper strecthing afterwords (like sitting down in front of the TV immediately) will help the ligament tighten up.
Sitting hunched over for prolonged times (this is how I get it most), shortens and tightens the ligaments.
When you get this, DRINK WATER! REHYDRATE! and if you can stand it, STRECH OUT YOUR STOMACH! Lay face first on the ground, and slowly push your upper body up while keeping your knees on the ground. It hurts a bit, but I've found this is the quickest way to ease the pain, as it STRECTHS OUT THE LIGAMENT AND ELIMINATES THE CAUSE OF THE PAIN.

I have had this too. I get pain in my belly button and the tip of my penis, it also burns when I urinate. I used to get more often when I weighed 205 lbs (now 154 lbs). I think it has something to do with eating unhealthy.

It's nice to know I'm not a unique freak of nature on this. I've been to probably a dozen doctors over the years, and not a single one of them had ever heard of anything like it nor had the slightest clue about it. Very frustrating.
I've suffered from this since I was about 12. I'm 37 now, and it happens much less frequently now, though, thankfully.
I get the same pulling pain around the navel, that sometimes travels into the penis area. Urinating while having an episode is excruciating. Often it will kick in while urinating, and then I'm cramped up in the fetal position for hours, often until I can get some sleep.
A lot of physical activity with twisting and bending is the only trigger I've ever been able to identify, although sometimes it happens without anything like that. Dehydration is also likely a part of it. It always kicks in after I've stopped the physical activity and have become more sedentary, usually sitting down, and when I stand up - wham! It tightens up and pulls with terrible pain and I crumple to the floor. So embarrassing! Then it is usually hours before I can stand up again.

22 year old male. I have been experiencing the exact same pains as well for the past 5 years. I normally have these pains 3-4 times a year. Matter of fact, woke up this morning to the pain in my penis. Actually had the pain 4 days ago as well.
Not as active as I was in high school, but I still go out and play basketball about 2-3 times a week. I personally believe that it isn't anything too serious, but if you feel like it is you should contact a doctor. I can tell you now after doing research that it is not a umbilical hernia or patent urachus.
I have always attributed the pain to dehydration, which is what many of you have also acknowledged as well. Before seeing this site, I started to describe the pain as a "internal stomach cramp," which many of you all also stated as well. I try to avoid the fetal position as much as possible and try to slowly stretch the area (someone also stated this). I will also drink about 2 glasses of water and then I will have to pee, which burns slightly and is crippling sometimes to the point that I have to stop peeing. I then drink a full glass of water 2-3 more times throughout the day and night.
Someone also mentioned if you are sitting down or crouching down for an extended time that it also may cause the pain. This could be true, factored in with dehydration, as I was sitting down crouched over slightly for about 2 hours last night and then woke up this morning with the pain.
Lastly, someone also mentioned the consumption of caffeine beverages. I will drink a soda from time to time, but it is never on a consistent regular basis throughout any part of the year. However, within this past week my intake of soda's increased due to family reunions. If someone can confirm that caffeine causes dehydration then I would bet that it is one of the sources to our problem.
Very painful at times, but I think we will be alright. Glad I found this page. I'm willing to put some type of chart together to confirm that there is some common ground between the drinking or lack of drinking habits of the people that experience this pain.

Another 22 year old guy here experiencing much of the same problems. I've had these pinched nerve-esque feelings in and around my navel for a few years now, often going away within 10-15 mins or so and much relieved in the fetal position. However today was the first time that I noted the pain in correlation with a sting at the tip of my penis at the point when I was almost done emptying my bladder. It was excruciating and luckily it happened right when I was about to finish the last few drops. For the rest of the day I've been feeling a sort of dull ache in the navel area and so I'm closely monitoring this, massaging on the area often hoping to thwart another episode.
I always work-out vigorously 6 days a week, so today I did worked-out prior to the attack. After the workout I ate a meal, drank water and surfed the net for a couple of hours before retiring to the bed for a little nap as I was tired (oddly, as this was in the morning after a full day's worth of sleep). Anyway, after I rested up for the 45mins and went to empty the bladder, I then keeled over in debilitating abdominal-penile pain. I, too, felt a cord-like connection and also understand the relation to the rectal area as well (as someone else also noted)
Also, for the past year or so I've had a pain in the tip of my penis during a first erection, slightly similar to that which I felt today whilst peeing. So I'm wondering if something is damaged along the pathway connecting the navel to the bladder into the urethra or if these are just spasms and that what's wrong with my erections is a different matter all together - even though they feel related. I also tend to urinate quite often throughout the day but I am unsure if its just because I drink either a) too much water b) too much water at one time or c) have some sort of infection. I've had blood and urine samples done before but all have come up negative.
I usually eat very nutritious foods so no colas at all and few sweets and fried foods on occasion. Mostly green vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, nuts and grains.
In solidarity with the rest in here!

finally i have found the threa di have been searching for for years. i wish i would have the found the cure here though. i am a 26 year old male and have had this problem 5-10 times a year for the past 5 years at least.
i have read the thread and the umbilical answer is the only one that seems to make any sense. i only get the urination pain near the end of my urination in which i tend to cut it off early cause its too painful. i also experience the sharp rectal pains randomly through the years just as the other guy stated and i do think they are connected somehow.
i also noticed and have always thought that this had something to do with when i masturbate. it seems to happen to me either directly after or the next day after i masturbate (dry) when i probably shouldnt have. meaning when my penis didnt feel up to it or in the mood. i know that sounds funny but i hope you know what i mean. i read somewhere else that someone said it had to do with urination after masturbation. that you urinate to quickly after masturbating and the semen/ urine cycle hasnt switched over or something. but now after reading that females have this same problem i feel it is unlikely.
do you guys notice this after masturbation yourselves?

Interstitial Cystitis is most likely what the diagnosis will be if all other possibilities have been exhausted. Facts are that no-one knows for certain what it is, the cause or causes, treatment, therapies etc., nor can any set of symptoms be pin-pointed. Giving it the name, Interstitial Cystitis, acknowledges it exists, but, it remains a mystery.

My post is to those that have been to the doctor already and had tests to rule out potentially dangerous illnesses. If you haven't been to the doctor, regardless if your symptoms are exactly like mine or others posted here, I suggest you go immediately. These symptoms could be the result of something serious! !
Very interesting website reading material I posted above there and it sounds like a good fit for interstitial cystitis. I am a 39 yr old male. This started about 10 years ago for the first time and then again few years ago for me and only happens about 3 or 4 times a year. I've been through a battery of testing at ER's to the tune of over 26,000 dollars worth (which I still owe **sighs**.)
My symptoms:
I get the bladder bit..more to the side for me...and the feeling extends down to the bottom of the penis between the testicles and anus and sometimes to the sides and back where the kidneys are. It's like a dull ache most times and the emergency room trips was when I felt like it was on fire and I was passing out. I was worried about apendicitis (tho i didn't have a temperature and various medical scans and tests picked nothing abnormal up) Also the burning feeling at the end of urination for some but not every time during the "attacks" so that made me worried about contracting a VD.
Also someone mentioned the "choking" weirdness. It feels like my neck is "thick" and i keep having to pull my loose tshirt collar away from my neck only to realize my tshirt collar isn't really touching. %-) The "pulsing" thru the neck into my mouth as another stated. I would check the mirror to see if my blood vessels were sticking out or something. o.O
I notice that citric beverages is probably a strong factor in my case. I notice it after having too many glasses of V8 or Orange juice and also it's usually after I've been dehydrated either by having enough alcohol to catch a buzz or after not drinking enough water and working/playing too hard and THEN the next day having the v8 or orange juice without having enough water first. I am grateful to have found this site out and glad that I am not alone with me mystery illness.
The problem for me does go away after about a day and now reading all these posts, I don't have the "passing out" feeling this time because I think that may be anxiety related and a byproduct rather than a symptom of the disease, but that is just me guessing because this time the symptoms are not at their worst.
Hope this posts helps.

Hey there, i have the same problem, i have an innie belly button. and one night i was lay on the sofa, (shirtless)when my girlfriend came in and sat on the seat next to me, she then started to nag me about my belly button and was poking it, but whilst doing so, i kept feeling a sharp pain at the end of my penis (like you did) and it was really uncomfortable. i know how you feel, but what i did to stop the pain:
1. lie down on a bed
2. lightly touch your belly button
3.keep doing so, until the pain isnt so bad.
4. then wait for about half an hour and do something to pass the time, then touch it again but right in the centre, and the pain should have stopped, if not, repeatthe procedure,
hope this helps!

Thank you everyone who has posted their comments/ideas. Hopefully if we all continue to do research and share our ideas, someone will finally find out what this is and will be able to help so many people suffering from this pain.
I believe that this pain has to do with the urachal remnant. Has anyone else been told that a urachal remnant was seen on a scan that they had taken? Although I do not think that this pain is a result of the urachal remnant itself, I think that there may be a nerve trapped up (nerve entrapment) in the remnant which is getting pulled after certain movements and causing this sharp shooting pain both behind the belly button and in the penis.
Any thoughts?

Anyone also have this symptom? Not only do I occasionally get the straight pain from belly button to penis for no reason, but when i poke into my belly button I get that same pain again. I have experienced this since being a child and have developed a phobia of being tickled on the stomach around the belly button area as a result. Really annoying that my girlfriend does not understand why I am this way about my belly button. Wish I had some sort of an explanation! Thanks

Holy sh*t, this entire thread has enlightened me greatly on this condition. And to the author of this quote, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN. I told my girlfriend about the excruciating pain, yet she continues to push into my belly button to induce an episode.. just because it's "funny". I sent her this thread on facebook.. hopefully she'll think twice before stabbing her finger into my "urachus".
ALSO.. I have a theory that the way our umbilical cords were tied. PLEASE SPECIFY WHETHER YOU HAVE AN INNIE OR OUTIE. Only a few writers mentioned that they have an innie, like myself, and I think it could have something to do with it.

38 year old male here - MUCH more comfortable knowing that I'm not crazy! I've had it since my teens, no doctor ever understood. One theorized that it was a UTI but that never panned out. I've also had kidney stones and it's unrelated in my experience. Having read through all of these I would suggest that dehydration and caffeine are clear correlations in my experience. That seems to be the trigger, not sure what the underlying etiology might be.
