Will accutane clear fordyce/sebaceous prominence, how much and fur how long should I take accutane for my chronic fordyce condition?

Hi Mike,

Accutane is a prescription drug.  As such your doctor would give the dosage and period.

Fordyce spots and sebaceous prominence are not listed uses.  Neither is a form of acne.

It does have side effects.

Thank you medic dan, I have read many times that accutane helps clear fordyce spots would I be wrong in thinking this?

To the best my knowledge, at this time it is not listed for use on fordyce spots or sebaceous prominence. My drug reference indicates "acne." Doctors are not supposed to prescribe drugs outside there listed usage/dosage.

That's the other problem. Most doctors, the smart ones anyways, won't prescribe accutane for anything but it's listed use. It really can be a dangerous drug Mikey. It's not like taking a couple of aspirins. It can cause severe liver problems.

Thank you medic dan, What kind of liver problems?

Liver failure or liver damage, including cirrhosis. To add, you can't live without a liver.

Why would they make a drug like that? How would I know if my liver is in trouble?

ALL drugs have side effects, some worse than others. It's a benefit to risk decision when prescribing drugs.
Liver panels would be run to test how effectively it is working.

How do I stop myself from getting the side effects, I mean are there blood tests I could get done somewhere?

You can't really stop yourself from experiencing side effects. Not everyone gets them but there is no way to know until you are actually on the drug.

Accutane is very potent. There are many warnings about liver damage and other side effects. It is also a severe pregnancy risk (not applicable to a male) but it IS something to consider.

Your doctor should run a panel after you'd been on it about a month.

What's a panel, can I get one of these tests done by myself?
Reply

A panel is a collection of tests. They check enzyme levels, cholesterol levels, etc.
Usually your doctor orders these tests. You'd have to find an independent lab.

What would u be looking out for after having theses tests?

The levels would be monitored for their values. Depending upon if and how much they change it could indicate a problem with the liver.

Are you taking Accutane now?

Not at this time, I don't know how I am going to monitor my liver because I won't know what to look out for at my blood test
