Hello I have posted on here once before about me breaking my ankle. I broke it 6 weeks ago and I had my cast off two days ago! I wanted to ask what symptoms are seen as normal after the cast is removed I still have swelling that seems to go at might ans return in the morning when I am up and about. then I still feel some tenderNess near my ankle but it's not when I bear weight just when I touch it, Is this normal? I just want to be back to normal but I can't walk without a limp and without using a crutch! will this ever get better? my ankle feels unstable and I'm scared to walk but the consultant says it looks like it's healing well and I an apply full weight?

Hi Sam,

It can take a while for you to get the strength back in your ankle.  While in a cast it was protected and the muscles not used so they atrophy, weaken.  Normally you'd go to physical therapy to strengthen these muscles.  It can feel "heavy" or be swollen, this is normal.  As it heals more blood flows to the affected areas to provide increased nutrients for growth.

The bone will heal even more with weight applied to it.

Good luck.

Hi Sam,

It can take a while to heal. It depends upon your age and general health as well as how/where the break was.

Swelling is NORMAL.

Check with your physical therapist.
