A friend of mine has finally realised that one day the alcohol will kill him. He is middle-aged. He has been drinking for 13 years and it has gotten to 2 litres of vodka a day or more.

He has been to the doctors and has been advised to slowly cut down the drinking. He has also been forwarded to a residental detoxing place where they can help him further. The doctor has not gave him any suppliments, vitamins, etc to help with the symptons of withdrawl.

However, although some symptoms are mild, one big symptom which is becoming a struggling for him to get through with the shaking and sweating. He is sipping alcohol slowly when it is getting bad to lessen the effect, but is looking for another alternative (or at least something to lessen the alcohol dosage yet again).

I have looked around the internet and only found "Go to the doctors" "Go to a detox" and "It'll only get worse". I understanding this, as does he. However, any little remedies or tricks (such as doing something which uses up concentration has worked a little)would be lovely. The detox is not starting for another month so help is highly apprechiated.

Thank you.
I'm not an doctor or anything, but I am a recovering alcoholic. Your friend is very lucky, I drank for 7 years straight and did permanent damage to myself. I thank God for it because it woke me up and I quit. When I quit, I suffered no withdrawl symptoms. Absolutely none. So, tips and tricks, for starters, I constantly sipped on crushed ice. To quote the great Yogi Berra, "90% of the game is half mental" lol...and the constant arm bending is also a habit for alcholics, just as the constant hand movement is to cigarette smokers, sounds funny but true. Crushed ice also kept me constantly hydrated. I think it helped a great deal.
Also, I was concerned with my condition (the drinking caused nerve damage and at the time, I completely loss use of my legs) so you see, my mind was occupied with other matters, therefore keeping busy is also very important...in retrospect, when I was working and I was busy, my hands wouldn't shake, however, come lunch or break time, the shaking would start. So it's good to keep busy. Vitamin B and Vitamin D are a must. They all help in the recovering and withdrawl process. This all worked for me, plus the fact that I really wanted to quit. It's good to be sober.
I hope this helps. I'll pray for your friend's recovery.
